Could someone explain something to me? Every Vanguard build I've ever seen has Area Reave as the bonus talent, but doesn't that take away from the class's Charge-centric playstyle? What time is there where one would blow a six-second cooldown to use Reave and not Charge?
Well a six second cool down isn't really a six second cool down after upgrades and leveling up. Area Reave is a great way to soften up, and even immobilize, a pack while boosting ur heath before u charge in for the kill/kills.
It also compliments charging up the GPS.

Okay, so I’ve been an Infiltrator since ME1. But a thread I made a few days ago about powers sparked my interest in (finally) starting a Vanguard.
Now, I’ve scoured the board for all the Vanguard threads and I’m reading really different opinions in each. Currently, I’m still leveling, but I’m making my way through hardcore difficulty after the admittedly steep learning curve of learning which enemies I can charge without glitching out the game.
I’m coming up on the collector ship and my original take was to get the claymore for my advanced training, but a large segment of the community seems to think that’s a bad idea. Most of you say to take up sniper training and use the Viper. Now, as an infiltrator, this concept doesn’t really scare me, as I understand the need to occasionally hang back. But is the Claymore really that uninteresting? I was hoping it’d be more like comparing the Window to the Mantis. I’d like my Vanguard to be quite a bit different than my Infiltrator.
I have 3 Vanguard saved games for ME3 (and one each for Soldier, Infiltrator, and Sentinel). I have a Vanguard that has sniper training, the other has assault rifle training, and the last has the Claymore training. Sniper and Assault training is a good choice for those who *in a way* does not want to leave the shooter game play experience. However, I must say that Claymore shotgun training is the best suited for the vanguard role...up close and personal. Brings down a scion in 6 shots. 5 if your really good at it. Claymore charging Vanguard, I think, is the ultimate Vanguard experience. However, you must first master the "reload trick". It will take a bit of practice but once you get the hang of it, you'll never pick any other weapon other than the claymore.
Moreover, in playing the Vanguard, do not rely on *pausing*. Get your flow going...you'll get the hang of it soon enough.
here as some videos.
ME2: Vanguard vs Geth Prime (solo play)
ME2: Shepard vs. Tela Vasir
ME2: Reckless Vanguard - the Reaper IFF mission
You can even use it with the soldier class:

To hell with reave. Hell from what I remeber the 100 page plus vanguard tips and tricks thread had all of ONE build that featured reave. A whole hell of a lot of us don't bother with that ability at all.

Inferno ammo is all you need. Shotguns are already keyed to destroy shields and barriers, inferno not only shores up the traditional shotgun weakness in armor, but also provides great crowd control.
This.
I use to be all about Warp ammo, but i gave Inferno Ammo a real try and found it to be just as effective, if not more. It completes ur Shotgun making it effective against all types, and lites heath on fire causing panic, which spreads. Overall its very effective for a Vanguard.

I guess that I'm not headshotting as well as I used to but I find only the lightest of goons or guys that have a little of their defenses damaged die in one shot to the claymore anyway.

It takes a couple of upgrades to get back to one shotting things in NG+. Big part of the reason I haven't really bothered to do any NG+ runs.

I wonder which weapon is most useful to counter the vanguards weakness to enemies with multiple protection since vanguards only have incineration ammo which isnt that great.
Insanity mode if anyone wonder.
I always favor the eviscerator. Good damage, good range, 3 round clip, better agaisnt armor.
