I'm refering of course to this distasteful departure in regards to their ears.

The old one is the classical Tolkein one (or if you are a SciFi man, Vulcan one). I find it easier to take the Elves seriously. In fantasy worlds I find near human and truly alien species the easiest to take seriusly since they both make sense from a evolutionary perspective. Things like minotaurs don't. I won't mention how the new Quanari are basically 4th edition Tieflings since there are plenty of threads on that.

its still pracitcally identical to humans one might say, well then why change it? I tought the rational for the change was to put more distance appearnce wise between the species, could this perhaps be just a convenient excuse for what is perhaps the real reason which I will get to in a moment.

So let me defuse people who would call the new look unique. No its not. Actually the WoW Elves at least also have freaky eyes and different skin color. And centaurs are freaking half horse critters, sillyness like Minotaurs no doubt, but in a more fairy tale setting I can find the enjoyable (they do not mesh well with gritty fantasy ala A game of thrones).

Perhaps they want to emphaises elven connection to nature with the slight Leprechaun/Centaur vibe? Wow, how original.

I suspect the real reason is to make them more cartoony, less classical fantasy generical and more video game generic. If this puts me in the old fart "I hate how they make it more like WoW camp" so be it.

That is only concept art, how sure are we that they are going to look exactly like that.

I agree that the ears are very odd and not attractive.

I think what you'll actually see in-game will be quite different than the concept art. Graphics engine, art development and all that. That was concept art after all, no? Unless I'm mistaken?

I feel this way only about the new hurlock design. I hate it. I absolutely hate it.
I know they are trying to go for a look that is unique to Dragon Age, but the hurlocks are just ridiculous. And for those who say, "It's in Alpha - chill out," take a look at the concept art from Dragon Age: Origins: the hurlocks in the first game look just like the concept art.

Check it out (Dragon Age: Origins Hurlock Concept Art) : http://www.dragonage...s/hurlock_2.jpg

Now, look at the concept art for Dragon Age 2 hurlocks: http://img121.images.../i/hurlock.jpg/

Bam! See what I'm saying? They need to understand that when people say, "The darkspawn look like orcs", it is not a bad thing! Different isn't always better. Everything has already been done, but classics are classics for a reason.

The qunari still can look menacing with or without horns. That's all I'm saying on the matter because it's not going to change anything.

Alright, two things:

1) Whether Tolkien actually gave elves small, pointed ears is up for debate.
2) Aren't tieflings half-demons? That's less believable (especially in DAO lore) than a horned species.

It's not that the look is unique (I don't really like it, honestly) as elves, it's to look different from short, slight humans with sharp ears. The qunari looked like tall humans, nothing at all like the "beasts" they were called in game. They're trying to make the species look more different than each other.

Also, those centaur ears don't look anything like the concept elf ears. They're horse ears. Should have used OoT Hylian ears.

About the qunari: I love the new look. The horns add a whole new side to the race. They were just giant humans before, like the Swedes of Thedas; now they feel like a unique race in their own right, and a believable "uncorrupted" ogre.

As we all know, they're not real people.

They'd be people if they had horns.

I just mean that they are more recognizable as qunari. The horns add a touch of intimidation, I think. Are you scared of a horn-less goat? I think not.

No, it really was to make the different species look more distinct.
Don't like it? Sucks to be you.

Edit:

Wait a minute, my troll senses are tingling.

I agree with the OP. When I played DA:O, I was amazed at how HUGE the elves were. I always thought that elves were like 2 feet tall, made presents in Santa's house, and when it wasn't the holiday season, baked delicious nabisco cookies and pies in tree trunks. They should make the elves more like these elves.

share common ancestor some million years down the road, and yet you find differently looking ears on two species something that makes it hard to take things seriously?

srsly?

Concept art is fairly different from the actual in-game model. I would wait to complain about what certain species look like until seeing their finished in-game models.

Why would you wait until it is finished? "Ahh, finally, we're done the hurlocks - let's show everyone and see what they think. Oh, they hate it? Well, it's too late now; if only they'd told us during development."

Didn't they use small ears because of the clipping issue with helmets? Or was there a deeper lore issue I'm overlooking?

Personally I prefer longer ears on my elves - not the silly, wave in the wind ones from WoW - but longer so you can actually tell you're looking at an elf and not a short, thin, human.
