In fantasy worlds I find near human and truly alien species the easiest to take seriusly since they both make sense from a evolutionary perspective.

From evolutionary perspective humans and this guy:

share common ancestor some million years down the road, and yet you find differently looking ears on two species something that makes it hard to take things seriously?

srsly?

Some people still look like that. My grandfather, for one.

But if he had Will Smith ears, you'd call foul?

No, no. If you go back to my first post, I was complaining with the same amount of dread that the OP was, but my complaint was about the look of the new hurlocks: pale, lipless jesters from hell.

And Will Smith is a God.

I'm not sure I get those who throw around "cartoony" like it's some kind of ultimate insult, a withering judgement that all decent persons will recoil from in horror.

Are they the same people that scoff at impressionist and expressionist art, declaring it to be the work of amateurs who are too lazy or unskilled to "paint properly"?

I think something being overly catroony is something to bring up as an issue. I mean if your group consisted of a Tal'Vashoth, an Apostate Mage, a former templar and snap, well it would just seem strange no?
I don't mind this look, I guess it serves to make them more clearly elven.

They don't seem such a big departure from the non-PC elves to me?

If you look at the concept art closely you'll start noticing many subtle and less subtle differences from humans. The difference is larger than if you compare humans of different origins.

I don't see some real resemblance between the pictures you provided as proof that the look is not unique, are you refering to the ear tilt and skin coulour? I'm not saying that the DA elves look super unique mind you, they're still within bounds of "standard" elves, just subtly changed. As it should be. Their depictions in books and art vary widely, so why limit one's self with it?

Bioware stopped with dnd for now so we can't expect the same looks of stuff. It's possible they didn't want to change everything too radically to alienate the fans, but it's good to see they're pulling more and more in their own way.

And btw, I'm pretty sure that even if they gave elves wings, 4 ears and 1 eye there's someone who already did that.

It would look weird because one of them looks completely different from the rest, not because of the particular way he is different. If you were to put a perfectly photorealistic model of a human being next to Origins characters, that would look strange and out of place too.

If the other three members of your theoretical party were rendered in the same style as Snap, that would look a whole lot less weird. Although it would probably be a wholly different kind of game.

The original poster seems to consider stylization a problem in itself.

Everyone looked as they are minus the cape so concept can indeed be different from the actual game, you see.

Sten looks nothing like he does in game. Alistair looks much older, Oghren has tattoos, and his face looks severely different, and Zevran looks zero like his concept except hair color.

Hehe, I was only attempting to joke about the capes. Anyone can tell the concept art is completely different from the game. :D

...Sorry. I didn't think you were joking because only two of them are wearing capes, so I figured you were trying to say something about how they all look identical anyway.

I suspect the real reason is to make them more cartoony, less classical fantasy generical and more video game generic. If this puts me in the old fart "I hate how they make it more like WoW camp" so be it.

You mean childish as ment to attract teen age rebellion attitude. Dark "fantasy" with glowing eyes. Yeah, most adults does find it little too childish and cartoon like style.

What an odd thing to be upset about.
