I'm refering of course to this distasteful departure in regards to their ears.

The old one is the classical Tolkein one (or if you are a SciFi man, Vulcan one). I find it easier to take the Elves seriously. In fantasy worlds I find near human and truly alien species the easiest to take seriusly since they both make sense from a evolutionary perspective. Things like minotaurs don't. I won't mention how the new Quanari are basically 4th edition Tieflings since there are plenty of threads on that.

its still pracitcally identical to humans one might say, well then why change it? I tought the rational for the change was to put more distance appearnce wise between the species, could this perhaps be just a convenient excuse for what is perhaps the real reason which I will get to in a moment.

So let me defuse people who would call the new look unique. No its not. Actually the WoW Elves at least also have freaky eyes and different skin color. And centaurs are freaking half horse critters, sillyness like Minotaurs no doubt, but in a more fairy tale setting I can find the enjoyable (they do not mesh well with gritty fantasy ala A game of thrones).

Perhaps they want to emphaises elven connection to nature with the slight Leprechaun/Centaur vibe? Wow, how original.

I suspect the real reason is to make them more cartoony, less classical fantasy generical and more video game generic. If this puts me in the old fart "I hate how they make it more like WoW camp" so be it.

you seem to forget that elfs like humans come in diffrent forms example would be a drow or a winter elf
and on top of that you cant asume concept art to be the real deal
elfs are suposed to be mystical beings right ? but you have so many images and conecpt art of the elfs you tend to forget what there suposed to look like
i am not saying your not intiled to an opinion i am saying elfs just have diffrent apperances
diffrent areas of thedas would have diffrent lookign elfs like for humans

There is no ends as to what an Elf can look like.
They originated in Norse Mythology, and have been designed differently all through-out time, though it seems the Tolkien-esque Elf is the most well known.

They look exactly the same to me, kind of a pointless thing to even bother posting about. for one you aren't playing as an Elf and most elves have their ears covered by hair... just.. really their ears this topic is pointless. The Elves used to be Immortal and they lost their bloodline along the way some how (I don't remember something like that) I'm sure they used to look really different.

Just like the Qunari we didn't know some were pale white with horns, why can't the elves have slightly different ear shapes.

Pick your battles.

Concept art is fairly different from the actual in-game model. I would wait to complain about what certain species look like until seeing their finished in-game models.

Why would you wait until it is finished? "Ahh, finally, we're done the hurlocks - let's show everyone and see what they think. Oh, they hate it? Well, it's too late now; if only they'd told us during development."

I really dont think any of the programmers will (or should) care about a handful of people shouting "if their ears are different im taking my ball and going home".
This is concept art, yes. CONCEPT being the operative word. Yes they are changing things, and if you dont like it dont buy it.

I'll admit, I dislike how they look on the concept art, but I'm reserving judgment until I see them in game.

There are lots of things I'm not keen on regarding the new art direction, but this is concept art. The finad redition will probably be much different. That being said, their ears are quite donkey like.

Tolkien never, ever refers to his elves as having pointy ears, or any other non-human anatomical feratures. In his descriptions they are simply a version of humanity more perfectly in harmony with the created world.

It's only illustrators and filmmakers who have given his elves the pointy ears we are familiar with today.

(Incidentally, illustrators and filmmakers have also tended to make Tolkien's elves blonde, when in the books Galadriel's golden hair is meant to be very unusual for her people -- those elves he otherwise describes almost always have black hair, pale skin, and grey eyes -- the same coloring as Tolkien's wife.)

Not only do the darkspawn look foolish in their concept art, but they have been rendered so in the demos.

Even Stanley Woo said that the art design is conceived and decided upon before the game is even announced to the public.

only thing i see wrong with those elves is that the female has no rib cage.
the ears don't look too horribly different, in my opinion. and i'm sure, as others have mentioned, that they'll look different in-game.

I personally prefer the new concept more. Elves in DAO were constantly referred as "knife eared" not a "leaf eared" and knife have a long, not only pointed, shape. And i think this, new shape, look more like a knife. Some may argue that they were called that way out of mockery, but I have not seen elves in other settings were called this way, only "pointy eared" or something like that.

More over, classical, leaf shaped ears already given by quanari in this game.

And most elven NPC have a long, big ears. Only PC characters do not out of clipping issue with helmets. Even Zev ears which were a lot smaller than non companion NPC ones has clipping issue.

In DA2 there would be no playable elf and all races will get their own type of armors so perhaps there will be some special elven and quanari helmets that has support for those species specific futures.

1. I doubt they're going to change a design because a few people don't like it. If it is their intention to create more visual diversity amongst the races and slightly larger ears is a direction they want to go in, they won't change that unless they feel like it. Not because someone on the forums cried about it.

2. The donkey comparison makes me lol. Have people even *seen* donkeys? I leave that comparison to WoW style elves, and the concept art elves are nowhere near as exaggerated.

I prefer smaller ears, to be honest, but I don't see this as pandering to teenagers whatever accusation of immaturity and brainlessness people want to toss out at others who are fine with the game as it is (from what we know so far). <_<

I know concept art is nothing to really judge upon but, the elves' ears from the concept art look really stupid and floppy...

BTW Alistair concept art > current Alistair

Personally I prefer longer ears on my elves - not the silly, wave in the wind ones from WoW - but longer so you can actually tell you're looking at an elf and not a short, thin, human.

I agree with you on this.
Honestly, I like the concept art. I hope it's a good resemblance to ingame elves.

Not crazy about the ears. Make them longer, sure, but I like them sticking more up than out or behind.

Actually, I reviewed some older pictures- it looks like more elf ears in DA:O are sorta swept back at a roughly 45 degree angle, both up and back. I guess I don't like the 90 degree angle that I'm seeing.

One thing I don't like about my charcter is that her ears don't point out from her hair even at the maximum ear length.

I can't even tell the difference.

I wanted to quote this twice but I think that might be a bit excessive. All this negative talk placed on the importance over the marginal alteration on the angle of the ears is, well... for a lack of a better word, ridiculous. Barring the fact that we are going off of slightly deformed concept art, they are just ears. I know when you're talking to someone that has irregular ears  you tend to lose track of the eyes but this is no greater battle of wills than preventing yourself from gawking at breasts.
