Personaly I dislike the new elven concept art with regards to the ears.

yukidama wrote....

2. The donkey comparison makes me lol. Have people even *seen* donkeys? I leave that comparison to WoW style elves, and the concept art elves are nowhere near as exaggerated.

Whilst the ears aren't reminiscent of rabbits, donkeys, or stupid evil Warcraft elves they're certainly moving quite firmly in that direction and that just feels wrong. Especialy since the Dragon Age elves are supposed to be capable of producing human offspring. They're meant to be very close to humans (becoming more human, the longer they spend around humans) so making them look so alien just feels wrong. Additionaly silly sticking out sideways anime ears annoy me something rotten. I'd rather not see such cartoony wonkiness in a quality game :P.

Yeah I'm not sold on the new concept art in general. I'm not a big fan of this "Just because it was in the first game doesn't mean we can't change it!" attitude towards many aspects of DA2. Granted its just the concept art but some art designs are a drastic departure from the first game. Obviously the art direction is going to be different because its a new game but at some point a lines got to be drawn between making artistic changes and just abusing artistic license.

I will agree that the departure from the original game is heavy in certain aspects. I wouldn't classify it as abusing artistic license. True, the aesthetics have changed but only for the hope of grasping a larger market share. Do not think this is an artistic endeavor. As such they have limited ties to the previous incarnation apart from maintaining the current fanbase without fully alienating us. The only way they will get the message is if people do not buy it. Words are meaningless. When the game is released, that's when the damage is done and the message can be sent.

I don't mind this look. I found it annoying that I had to get out of the annoying near-human flat-ear look just with mods.

Personally I prefer longer ears on my elves - not the silly, wave in the wind ones from WoW - but longer so you can actually tell you're looking at an elf and not a short, thin, human.

I agree with you on this.
Honestly, I like the concept art. I hope it's a good resemblance to ingame elves.

One thing I don't like about my charcter is that her ears don't point out from her hair even at the maximum ear length.

Yeah me to. im Playing a Female Elf now and i had to give her short hair so i could make her Ears longer .Otherwise she just looks like a short human.

Concept art is fairly different from the actual in-game model. I would wait to complain about what certain species look like until seeing their finished in-game models.

Why would you wait until it is finished? "Ahh, finally, we're done the hurlocks - let's show everyone and see what they think. Oh, they hate it? Well, it's too late now; if only they'd told us during development."

Because they're not going to change the look of something just because we don't like it, no matter what stage of development it's in. It's their game that they're making and spending long hours on and money. It's their baby. For people to go and criticize what other people have put all their time and effort into, and complain that they don't like it... They don't care. David Gaider has said it many times. "You don't like it? Tough."

Just to add a bit to the Elven mythology. In Nordic Lore, they were called alfer (alfs) and they were indeed small little creatures who a) helped everything to blossom in the spring and B) danced human's feet off - quite litterally. They lived beneath the earth and the entrance were in a hill, it is said. And whenever a handsom young man came their way, the alfen women would seduce him with their dance.

And he had to stay in at quarters in the deep underground for many months or years. Tolkien took these alfs (or in Ireland known as the little people) and made Elves out of them. Why he did this, is anybody's guess.

Back to the question at hand:

The concept art is concept art; people don't look like this in the game. Morrigan's concept art is way different from the way she is visually presented in the game. And it is the same with the other characters in the game; things change all the time during a creative process - be it writing for a game, for a movie, for a novel or even for paper you're to do for school.

Y'know it's true!!!

And plus I can jsut imagine a cool, calm, and calculating Alistair from the concept art rather than the "always-whining-help-me-up-no-that's-wrong-i-hatez-you-me-leaving-now-bai-bai-forever Alistair" that we have now

The OP just offered his own opinion and a bunch of pictures he still has an opinion on. Actually aliens that look like humands tick me off because it is very unlikely that two species that come from entirely different planets that shouldnt be able to support other planet life shouldnt look like us!

Elves with bigger than usual ears, and dudes with horns bother you?? geezus, that isnt even remotely bothersome to me.

Also OP talks about originality of elves and quanari, I dont see bioware ever making a mention of making them look Orginial just other fans.

He also has trust issues and proposes with his dead sister's ring. You find his son later, who is now in league with the darkspawn.

Only the first part is true, but still he was Carth 3.0. I much prefer the adorable little rose-giving snarker we got. Not some weary mistrusting veteran.

*refrains from joining into the Alistair Defense Team* I've done this enough over the months on the DA:O boards, so yeah.

Anyway... the ears don't bother me even though I prefer smaller. It's better than a full on WoW look.

BioWare is trying to break away from all those established tropes they used in the first one. They're trying to make their own world, not copy someone else's.

No, the Fallen Prince whose only goal was to save his people but torn between what is right but is really wrong and what is right but only with the lesser evil, but was caught in the immense calcualting web of plans by the Lich King thus his fall from glory was already set.

But the Fallen Prince was one step ahead, if he was destiend to fall so be it, but he will go out in the most gloriosu way that will shake the very foundations of the world. He cast out both Ner'Zhul and his former humanity thus becoming the Lich King, no longer a spiritual merge but one supreme being. He began his crusade amongst the living becoming the harbringer of millions of lives and souls, forever sealing his name as the evil tyrant.

But when finally slain, the desperate small humanity rose up and looked upon into his father's eyes and what was there was not the gold grief and hatred from before but a final relief that somehow his soul and life was at peace. And at the moment when he asked his father of the end, there was a unbreakable bond, a connection between father and son, and then the Terenas line faded away into the Twisting Nether, but their place in history shall be ever remembered.

(yes me an Arthas fanboi, Illidan can kiss my ass)

That's nice:whistle:...  He still killed thousands of people and his own father.  Illidan's just as twisted.  Anyway, they're both better than Alistair in my book even if he was my Warden's best non female friend.

In fantasy worlds I find near human and truly alien species the easiest to take seriusly since they both make sense from a evolutionary perspective.

From evolutionary perspective humans and this guy:

share common ancestor some million years down the road, and yet you find differently looking ears on two species something that makes it hard to take things seriously?

srsly?

I don't think you realize what long ears sticking out of the head at a 90° angle means from a evo perspective. Its a rather wierd thing to see on a primate, even a bipedal one.

Anycase I find them primarily aesthetically displeasing. Like I said they give off a leprechaun/centaur vibe.

Wasn't there a quest where you destroy the last bit of his humanity, a 'weakness' he ripped from himself, so you can weaken him for later? Man Blizzard must really be retcon crazy over there, ignoring **** that happened in the same expansion.

Great, now you've all started it.

This will derail into a battle of two worlds.

The ears that the elves have shown are hardly of warcraft size. I would start worrying if they got the bushy eyebrows.

LIES!!! Alistair > Arthas - especially since I usually kick Arthas' butt every week raiding on my shaman (well, if our guild run on Thursdays are full that is). I find that I much prefer roses and snarkiness, even when Alistair gets upset (Connor kind of was family - indirectly :P ). Besides, my death knight alt has Shadow's Edge, so when I raid ICC on her, I get that whole creepy stalkerish whispering from Arthas. :P

EDIT: Oh yes, the elf ears. Can't say I like the concept art, but hey, I'm not playing one in DA2 so I won't be saddled with them! I like the qunari redesign though, and I can live with the new darkspawn. Because the darkspawn are supposed to retain characteristics of their respective broodmother's race, I don't have an issue with hurlocks looking more human at all (not that I approve of the massive teeth :P ). I'll withold final judgment on elves until they give us screenshots of some.

I don't mind their ears. I just don't like the female's Na'vi "flat face" nor how stick-thin she is. Elf lady needs a few cheeseburgers and fries.
