First time playing Baldur's gate and I'm having trouble with my character and couls use some advice. I'm trying to decide which of the two classes to use. I've done some testing with both, and invariably end up playing bith as archers, and on that front the fighter/mage wins. But I'm always annoyed by Imoens mediocre thief skills early on.
Also is it better to dual class thief to mage rather than start as a thief/mage?
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.
Fighter/mage or mage/thief?

I dont really get how you can say imoen has mediocre thief skills as she is a pure one and has decent dex. There is still montaron(he is fighter/thief though) and safana if you require a thief(think there is a 4th one but i cant remember well) s for class selection its always up to preference though what kind of playtrough your aiming at might change this a little. Are you aiming for a powergaming playtrough?

Early on I find Imoen is near useless at picking locks, which makes me want to play a thief/mage, who then dies when a wolf storms in or kobold archers decide to volley fire at me.

For a first timer, A combination including some fighter is certainly better.

Also, as a first time player, I don't recommend dual classing. It's one of the few ways to really screw yourself up if you don't know what you're doing. Remember that if you dual class you can't use the abilities of your first class until your second is one level higher. You don't want to be stuck without being able to pick locks/disarm traps.

You only need 20,000 experience to get Immy up to 100 locks and traps, iirc.

This is true for every character in BG1 lol. So no worries. F/M is better, especially if the only thing you are concerned with are thieving skills. Imoen will catch up soon enough.
