There have been *many* races that joined up with the Council since the Turians. The most prominent were the Volus, but there's also the Elcor, the Hanar, the Drell...

I'm pretty sure the volus actually found the Citadel before the turians did.

I can't tell you how awesome I thought the yahg was. It was a fascinating creature and I had a Liara-geekoid moment where I wanted to know everything about the yahg as a race.

Also, I totally wasn't expecting it, so when I first saw the yahg the "whoa" factor was through the roof. Thumbs up.

At first I was a bit huh, but after reading the dossiers and gaining more info on the Yahg however, I found it to be a good move to introduce the race and it didn't feel out of place anymore as I saw there was real thought behind it.

I like the yahg, I just wish they'd been mentioned somewhere else first so that it didn't seem so much like an ass-pull.

Still, I like the yahg.

I liked it in the sense that the Shadowbroker was not so much the Yahg as he was the ship and the network linked to it.  It felt like more of an enduring institution, a step up from the standard 'Dread Pirate Roberts' theory that's been tossed about since ME1.

The Yahg was cool though.  It's like Bioware read the forums, saw everyone arguing over whether it was an asari or a bunch of salarians or TIM and said "Screw it, we're not vindicating any of you.  Now fight this huge f___ing man-toad.  With a machinegun.  And riot gear.  Good luck with that!"

I would have preferred it if it was a already established race. I was betting on it being a quarian, just because no one would expect that.

And on a totaly random note, why when I type quarian does my spell check bring up antiquarian as correction?

Having the Yahg as a bigger badder race than the Krogan is to me a bit of lazy writing, instead of having some well written character, we'll just put in something even meaner....

...which means next time Bioware'll have to think up something bigger and badder...

So where does it stop, a 100ft 30ton monster? This is how those stupidly large swords appear in games, being lazy and out-biggering something rather than thinking how to use something better.

I'm okay with new alien races as long as they're well thought out. And how come most of the aliens looks so freaky. The yahg especially looks like an abomination with that weird mouth... can we have some attractive alien races next?

Disappointed for several reasons.

1.) Duex Ex Machina came out of nowhere.

With so many people expecting so many things, I'm sure BioWare was under pressure to make the Shadow Broker a human, a krogan, an asari, a turian, a group of fifty salarians, an AI, a thresher maw, Cerberus in disguise, any combination of the above, all of the above, and so on and so forth.

So they snapped and just made a new species. The easy way out, much?

2.) "NEW TOY!!!" Syndrome.

People are going to be wanting a yahg squad mate and shrugging Grunt and Wrex off to the dumpster.

3.) Ultimately, my biggest disappointment is that BioWare has enough on their hands with existing species.

There is not a single in-game, talking hanar. There are hanar world models that don't talk, and there is a Blasto hanar that talks but does not show up, but there is no talking, in-game hanar. There are only a few elcor, all of which have insignificant roles. BioWare created the vorcha and then tossed them in the recycle bin right after Mordin's recruitment mission. The volus clan do not make any notable appearances outside of biotic transcendence and kicking the news reporter with the absurd-long name. The batarians have gone from being a dangerous, feared, and scarily unpredictable part of the plot to being Team Rocket, always scheming in their lair but never amounting to more than a thorn in the galaxy's side. And to top it all off, BioWare added the raloi via the Cerberus Daily News and hasn't done anything with them yet. If BioWare is going to be doing anything with new, minor species, I think they should work on chewing what they've bitten off before they look to take a new bite.

I absolutely LOVED LotSB, but it ended on a really "meh" note. Part of me wants to get excited about the yahg because they're really cool, but getting excited means wanting yahg DLC and yahg squad mates and yahg history and yahg this and yahg that. And, well, we haven't even gotten that much for the elcor, hanar, volus, raloi, vorcha, or batarians.

Crap, we haven't even gotten some of that for the salarians or turians.

Sort of TL;DR. I really hope this doesn't turn into Star Wars where species are a dime a dozen. I'd rather have BioWare focus on maintaining a few, richly detailed species than toss in a new species for every different chapter in the plot. It takes WAY more creativity to work with your current species rather than come up with a new one every time you can't think of which one would be best suited to pin the tail on.

I think it's significant that Bioware introduced a new species in this DLC. Especially since they put Krogan to shame. It'll be interesting to see if we see more and/or fight more of them in ME3.

I liked it, and its certainly not an ass pull.

You don't design an entirely new model from the ground up, with its own unique animations, and slap a brand new species on top of it, and pull it out of your ass. They spent the money and time to create something entirely new for a DLC lasting only a few hours. Obviously, They have Plans for the Yahg.

Again, not an ass pull.

That would be re-using resources, making it yet another Asari with a slightly different skin tone.

I can understand not being too thrilled with them, though.

Uh... +1.

I think it's good that BioWare didn't cave into the community's wild speculation and instead tried something new and interesting. I mean, I was expecting an AI or a TIM-esque bloke sipping fine wine, but introducing a new species worked far better IMO.

Still think it would have been more interesting if the Shadow Broker had been a Turian,Krogan or Salarian female - Introducing one of the "missing" character models right under our noses would have been a lot of fun i think.

While I enjoyed having a new race to learn about, overall I have to say I'm a little disappointed about the Shadow Broker being a Yahg. For a being that's supposedly more intelligent than a salarian, he certainly doesn't act like it; he freely allows Shepard and his group into his personal sanctum, and then doesn't bother calling for any backup during the fight. Nor did he seem to have any plans made in the eventuality that somebody did come into his office to try and kill him; for such an intelligent being, that seems almost incongruous.

True, it COULD be explained by the old "I have such confidence in my own power and ability that I don't need underlings or elaborate traps to defend myself" shtick that fantasy has always used for beings like Dragons or Demon Lords, but the latter two are immensely powerful in person and can really put up a good fight. In contrast, the SB just kind of... waddled around, firing his gun, and didn't make use of any clever tactics. And for a creature that's supposedly a WORLD'S apex predator and physically powerful enough to make a Krogan cry for his mommy, that just doesn't seem realistic. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if the SB really wreaked destruction in the battle, destroying the room's terminals, walking through fire or electricity like it was nothing etc.

I SUPPOSE it could again be explained by the fact that, if the SB's been in power for 60 years, and spent all of his time listening to reports and doing political maneuvering, he may not have had much opportunity to exercise and practice his combat abilities (I certainly didn't see any exercise equipment in his room, and lore states that the Shadow Broker never leaves his private quarters), meaning that the yahg you faced was, in truth, a very fat and unfit specimen. If that's so, then I feel better about the SB being such a wimp in battle compared to Vasir. :P

Somebody earlier also mentioned not wanting the ME universe to end up like Star Wars, where different races are a dime a dozen. I completely agree with this; ME is based on hard science fiction, and extra-terrestrial life, let alone extra-terrestrial SENTIENT life, should be exceedingly rare indeed.

My version of the fight against the Shadow Broker had his mouth not close and it kept getting bigger and bigger as I kept shooting it. I had to reload the game because I couldn't see anything and the frames were getting extremely choppy.

Personally i liked it however my only issue was that they were kinda like the Krogan in the sense that they were all big, scary and could probbably rip you limb from limb, however they also have amazing intelligence, now i just found that to be out of place for such a creature, i'm not saying its a bad idea, just a wierd concept.

True, but remember that in the dossiers you can read about how this Yahg was unique in that he was smarter than the average Yahg, and learned at a rapid rate.

They don't "shun" the galactic community, the galactic community has quarantined them because they murdered the first contact teams the Council sent to thier planet.

So I'm pretty sure that even if the Yhang wanted to leave their planet, they couldn't because their ships would get blown out of the sky before even reaching orbit.

Probably not. I'm sure the Council would reassess their behavior before taking those kinds of measures.

All in all, if the yahg are anything more than a foot note in this interactive novel, I guess the proper way to interface them into galactic society is to send a different kind of delegation, one that displays brute force and superiority. Take out their leaders and they will follow you.

You know what that means. Blasto's going to the yahg home world.

Gosh.

I really don't know about you guys, but a thing isn't an "ass-pull" just because it is unexpected. It either needs to be unexpected and also convenient, or unexpected and also poorly written.

The yahg, for me, was neither. I was quite delighted that it was nothing I could have guessed. I know some of us had our hearts set on it turning out to be someone we know, but really, can you think of anyone who would have fit the bill satisfactorily? The Shadow Broker was always meant to be a mystery, and I found a mystery. The yahg, to me, are one big mystery. Way to reveal the SB without killing the mystique, the excitement, and the secrecy, BioWare.

I still say an AI. The Yagh was a tool for the AI so it can hide and observe Liara!

To Zaxares:

He did not have much chance by the time Shepard and Liara showed up. Liara said that everyone who had seen him in person was now dead. That likely means they killed all of his guards. At the point that they reached his lair, he was the only one alive on the ship besides Shepard's group and Feron. He knew it was going to end like that, but he made one last(futile) attempt to survive.

As far as not doing anything to prevent people other than him from accessing the SB network, the lore describes his race as highly combative and competative until they are defeated, at which point they support the new leader. There was no need to prevent his personal army from access because he never left and they were completely loyal to him, not to mention terrified of pissing him off.If any one of them managed to beat him, they would have become the new pack leader, and he would have obeyed them

Hell, he lived in a ship flying through an eternal superstorm on an out-of-the-way planet in an out of the way system, surrounded by guards, and able to move armies and assassins at his will. He had such and advantage that it was ridiculous, but he pissed off the only person in the galaxy with the will, ability, and resources to find him and kill him. Only one man in the entire history of the SB network was ever able to find him, and that only because of his unique set of aquaintances.

The fighting I might give to you, except that it has been stressed to an almost absurd level that krogan are stupid durable, but the yahg just get, "are big, and strong too." The yahg are big, and have apropriately sized muscles. The krogan have redundant nervous systems, internal organs, regeneration, have skin tougher than modern-day body armor, can eat and drink poison, live forever if not killed, and breed like fruit flies. The reason that Grunt was knocked out is because all the others were too, and it was a nessesary part of the mission. No way is a yahg going to send a Krogan running. The SB was fighting Shepard, who is no normal human. He has had gene work, synthetic bone, muscle and skin grafts, and is probably the toughest human in the entire galaxy, plus is wearing state-of-the-art powered body armor. He is definitely a match for the SB, and he beat him like a left-handed, red-headed stepchild.

I am not trying to be rude, just pointing out a few things. Personally, i thing the yahg are badass, but I hope they do not show up again. It would be a bit of a stretch to see them again when we have been explicitly told that he is unique.
