Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Actually, I'm thinking the main source of the problem is laying in the 64/32 bit translation layer for Win7/Vista. XP users dont get it from what Ive seen, 32 bit versions of Win7 and Vista remain relatively unaffected.
Once you go 64bit, you're adding a whole new set of equations into the mix. Despite what people say about being able to shove more ram into your rig, I still dont see the point of going to 64bit OS without any 64bit software or games out there to take advatage of it. Most of that extra ram you pile into the rig ends up just being used for all the shiney crap that MS shoves down our throats.
Switch off the shinies, stick to 32bit, and I suspect your game will be as good as it was designed to be.

Glad I found this thread.

I have the same crash as the rest in this thread, once I enter the tunnel below Liara's place the game crashes 9 times out of 10.

OS is Win7 x64, and I have all the ME2 DLC.

Playing in windowed mode avoids the crash.

Bump.

I'm having this issue, and none of the many suggestions by anyone for this has worked for me. I've had a playthrough before this with no issues. My current playthrough can not proceed any further, as I've only just gotten Illium.

So specifically:

1. What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?
The game crashes on Illium, as I attempt to go to the stairs leading to Liara's office.

2. When did the problem start occurring?
Just a few days ago, when Illium was opened up to travel to in game.

3. Where does your problem occur?
At the bottom of the staircase leading to Liara's office. It's precisely after I step beyond the line on the ground. If I step on the line and stop, the over-speaker announcement/advertisement will play fine. No matter if the audio is on or not, as soon as I step past that line on the ground, the game crashes.

4. What are the steps in replicating the problem?
Have the following DLCs installed: Equalizer pack, Inferno pack, Cerberus Weapon/Armor pack, Arc Projector pack, Collector's pack, Normand Crash Site pack, Blood Dragon Armor pack, Firewalker pack, Zaeed, Kasumi, Overlord, Arrival, and Lair of the Shadow Broker. Also have Patch V1.02 installed.

Start a playthrough, and get past Horizon, so that Ilium is unlocked. Proceed to Illium, and attempt to go see Liara.

5. Have you modified your game in any way?
I've only removed the game opening videos so that I can go right to the Mass Effect 2 start screen (a view of the ship debris field and black hole, askingto push and button to start).

I'm using the physical disk version of the game.

Here are my system details:
Game Tab:
MassEffect2.exe v1.02
MassEffect2Launcher.exe v1.01
MassEffectConfig.exe v1.03
Uninstal Mass Effect 2.exe v1.03

Summary Tab:
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz
Clock Speed: 2333Mhz Physical Memory: 2.99 GB
Display Adapter: NVidia GeForce 9800 GT VRAM: 512 MB
Driver Version: 270.61
Sound Adapter: Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)
Driver Version: 6.0.6002.18005

Platform tab:
Operating System: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium Service Pack 2 (6.0.6002)
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (Mar 2009) or later

As stated, I've tried everything so far suggested, short of uninstalling and reinstalling everything. I have tried doing so with just the LotSb DLC. Any assistance would be wonderful.

Slightly different crash than what the others were referring to by the look of it. Yours seems to happen on the stairs, where the others happened in the tunnel below her office. A few questions for clarification.
Did this start happening after installing any particular DLC, or have you had the DLC for a while, and this is a new crash that has started happening?
What is the actual sound device you have installed as it appears in Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices?
Did this crash start occuring after upgrading any sound or video drivers?

I've never actually gotten to the stairs. It happens on my way towards them, but before reaching them. As in, I'm standing under her office, facing the stairs, with the trade floor behind me, and the tunnel to the rest of Illium to my left. The line I was referencing (it's an obvious black line, that is wide enough to fully stand on) runs parallel with the stairs, and is crossed before you can reach them.

I did recently pick up Arrival, and this is my first playthrough with that installed. But the rest of the DLC I've had for some time now. As i stated before, I've even had a successful playthrough before, with all these DLCs, and this is only now showing up.

The Sound device is the basic on-board device on my motherboard, and no, I haven't updated any drivers for anything before. I did update my video drivers after this crash started, in an attempt to see if that would help, seeing as so many people have found success in dropping the video quality on everything and playing in windowed mode.

I get this as well, to stop it happening I edge shep up to the line, let her stand there for a moment then slowly step her past that point.

I'm guessing that line also has a hidden trigger in there to activate one of the many news boradcasts/advertisements that are playing throughout the game, so it might be a sound related problem.
Open up the ME2 configuration, go to audio, and make sure the "Enable Audio" option is set to On, rather than Default.
If that doesnt work, I'm going to have to ponder on this, and try out a few different PC configurations to see if I can isolate it.

The line does trigger a broadcast when you step onto it. I've been able to let the whole broadcast play through as well without crashing, so long as I've stopped right on the line. And then even without the broadcast playing, a step past the line crashes the game.

I've tried the audio set to On, Off, and Default, all with the same result of the game crashing one step beyond that line.

UPDATE:  With time on my hands today, I decided to suffer through uninstalling, and reinstalling the game, and all the DLC I have. Things work fine now.

For reference, I installed ME2, and then in order, the v1.02 patch, Zaeed and all Cerberus Network related DLC, the Equalizer Pack, Kasumi, Overlord, LotSB, and finally Arrival.

I was even able to complete the fitrst hacking quest for Liara, and still am seeing no issues.

I've also noticed that anyone with a Radeon 4800 series card will have this problem no matter what.

I had this trouble with a pair of Radeon 4870's and it did not quit, until I yanked the cards and their drivers from my machine and stuck in a pair of 1GB MSI GTX 460 videocards.

I have also learned not to force FSAA, and stuff like anisotropic filtering in the driver properties for my videocards.

I have exactly the same issue. Walking slowly, or reloading from saved games did not fix the problem. However, the suggestion to play in "windowed mode" enabled me to get through the game-crashing bug in the tunnel on Illium.

Disabling Dynamic Shadows had cured the crashing for me.

I'd crash at exactly the same places, so crashing had never been random.  Always run into a crash going through the doors and into the hallway below Liara's office.  I do crash at other locations in Illium, but the one below Liara's office is the one that catches me when I forget to turn Dynamic Shadows.  Always crash in Illium, not anywhere else.

You all rock. I uninstalled/reinstalled everything and it was still crashing, found this thread on google and used Windowed mode to get past the hallway, thanks!

I have tried and tried and tried to create this crash...and can't do it.

I'm forcing all NVidia control panels to MAX and trying again. Using RoadCrewWorker's ModManager to unlock framerate...
..and I'm going in! Wish me luck!

Disabling the Environmental Shadows worked for me. Also tried Disabling Dynamic Shadows. Also worked. Either one. I prefer leaving Dynamic Shadows on, and Disabling the Environmental Shadow option didn't seem to change much.

Running ATI 6870.

On a game that is 1+(almost 2 years old) years old, hasn't seen a patch in almost a year, about a bug that doesn't effect everyone??   My guess is no, since it isn't totally breaking the game, and you can work around it, and only a small portion or the game populance gets the bug.

If you really want to prod them to do something, you will have to go to EA.com and go through their help function to let them start a ticket, thus logging the issue.  If it crops up enough they MAY decide to do something, but don't hold your breath on it.

Have this problem too.

Almost all the DLC, I have omitted the appearence packs. So the game is fully patched,
i7 975x @ 4GHz, Win 7 x64, 12 GB RAM, GTX 580

game crash like clockwork in the hallway under Liara's office.
The only thing I did on illium was do the Parassini quest to arrest the merchant selling illegal schematics, and I went into the bar to talk with Conrad Verner. I came across the crash actually heading to the car port to talk to his supposed contact. With my specs being what they are, I cranked up every setting I can, lowered the frame rate from the max setting of 62 down to 32.

Running the game in borderless windowed mode does fix the problem, I was able on my first try to walk down that hallway. Universe can still be saved.
