How the heck do I get through this? Even with all the buffs in the world, and 2 characters that can use firewands, the fact that I can't move at all on the board without getting lightning struck means that the spellcasters and rooks make short work of me. This is the hardest part I have seen in the game.

Use potions of absorption. They grant 100% resistance to electricity.

Most of your characters can move to some extent (loosely according to chess rules).

I only have 2 absorption potions. And the chess rules are too constraining in movement. I don't even know which party member is supposed to be which piece.

Use the console to cheat in some potions. I always thought the chessboard was a pretty dumb design decision anyway. If a DM would present something like that during a PnP session, he'd be thrown out of the window. Don't feel guilty about cheating here.

Never mind, I found another way. Or I got lucky.

I had my 2 mages use their firewands, then had my cheetah/absorption tank run around to distract the enemy, used both firewands a 2nd time while having tank retreat for a moment, and continue playing chicken. It seems the fireballs and stray lightning bolts did most of the work for me. Though my tank did take heavy damage.

Everyone who can cast fireball or use a fireball wand does that. Everyone else uses the necklace of missiles, one of the two exploding potion types...whatever. Blanket the other side of the board with purifying flames...FOR THE EMPEROR!...err, I mean, to beat Durlag's.

Speaking of the chessboard, I'm currently unable to get there. I've tried recreating the creatures (maybe the first kill didn't register) and reloading, but it doesn't work... Anybody know what else I could try?
Edit: Forgot to say that the order in which I do the challenges (Air, Acid, Fire, Cold) does not seem to matter.
Edit2: Now I used cheats to simply teleport into the chess room, thereby bypassing the chess rules and making the whole fight pretty easy as everybody ran in one big lump towards me (2xHoly Smite + Fireball + Skull Trap).

I just bought the 4 in 1 box set of Baldur's Gate. I played this game years ago and my comp crashed right at the end of ToB. So, I figured I would be nastalgic and try and play it again. And, once again, I know about the bugs in Durlag's Tower. But, it has been so long since I have played that I don't recall how I fixed the problem the first time. I am stuck at the end of the third level. I killed everything on this floor (air, ice, fire, and slime monsters), but it won't teleport me to the chess board. I have tried loading from numerous different saves. I have cleared this floor atleast 10 times. Always the same reasult. Nothing happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go back to the fire room. There is likely an invisible opponent in there.

Nothing there. I have killed everything. I have searched every nook and cranny for anything living. The level is clear. I have tried killing the elemental monsters in numerous different orders. Nothing happens. I used to love this game. But, I remember why I hated durlag's tower now. Too bugged. Good concept. Bad execution on the developers part. Now, I will just have to leave this area without getting to enjoy the lower levels or the battle with the demon knight. If, you can think of anything else, let me know. Thanks for any help or suggestions. :)

The 4-in-1 set needs the TotSC patch applying, install it now if you haven't (should stop any more issues but won't fix anything broken so far in your game).

You could enable the cheat console and use to MoveToArea command to get to the next area. It's easy to do, if you don't know how just advise whether you are playing the standard game or EasyTutu / BGT mods. Also what version of Windows and whether you've installed to the program files folder...

I'll see if I can nip through the tower and check what global variables should be set.

Edit;
The variables and values I can see for this are
KALDRAN 1
SPRITE_IS_DEADKALDRAN 1
SPRITE_IS_DEADAIRASPEC 1
 SPRITE_IS_DEADJELSPA 1
SPRITE_IS_DEADPHEONIXGUARD 1 (EO not phoenix)
SPRITE_IS_DEADPHOENIX 1 (spelt correctly this time)
You can add/change these in SwordCoastKeeper (standard game) or Shadowkeeper (EasyTutu or BGT), then re-entering Kaldrans room should transport you.

I am fairly inexperienced with modifications of any type. I do remember having to patch the original set of discs I had years ago. I just figured this newer set wouldn't need it. I tried a patch yesterday that messed up the game. Luckily a backup/restore saved my game. If you know what patch it is I need, please post for me. Also, This is an unmodded game. Just the standard 4 in 1 set I bought about a month ago. But, I do remember, that I used shadowkeeper and a patch in the original. As far as variables go...you are speaking greek to me :). I am not too computer savvy. But, I kinda get the drift. The variables I would put in if the game isn't recognizing the kills? I guess. I haven't had a single problem with the entire game till Durlag's Tower. Levels 2 and 3 to be exact. I remember it being the same in the original set of discs I had too. I am playing on windows vista. I am not sure about where it is installed. I just clicked next when it told me to during install. Sorry, I am so lacking in computer know how. lol Anymore help..as to which patch and swordcoastkeeper install and use..is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your efforts in helping a frustrated lover of this series continue to play.

I tried to install the totsc patches..both english..and uk version. No success. The assertion reads: An assertion failed in D:\\Dev\\Baldur\\CBaldurChitin.cpp at line 591 Programmer says: No tlk file. Sigh. The swordcoasterkeeper seemed to install ok though.

As far as I know there are three patches for this game 1) uk 2) us and 3) international version. You might tru all three of them.

Is D you dvd-drive or your harddisk - or one of them? You might need to un-install the game (back up the save game folder first) and then intall it again. When you do, please do not install it into C:/Program Files as Vista does not like games being installed there. Please install it into C:/ games or C:/Baldurs Gate.

As for the variales, there are plot flags. Whenever you have done something or finiished a quest, the game checks if you have done them. And sometimes, you ran out of plot flags. This happened to me many years ago when I could't get out jail, because someone didn't update the number of plot flags.

Or think of it this way:
There are 100 quests in the game. You have a system in place that checks to see if all of these are done.
Then you have an expansion coming out, or rather an add-in, to the game. The game still checks to see if you've done 100 quests. When you have, the game then will hang.....in a loop.... That's because the addin, or expansion, make the game have maybe 50 more quests to do.

You get the drift, so yes in a sense the game is not recognizing the kills you do and the quest you. Or it is, you've just ran out ot plot flags, so to speak...

E is my dvd-drive disk. C is my hard drive. I think it is currently installed in the program files. I will try and install it in the C:/games file. Vista is a very quirky system. Hopefully, that will help. And, thank you for explaining the plot flags. It's nice to be informed. I will cross my fingers. But, I won't hold my breath. lol I wish I didn't love this game so much. Otherwise, I wouldn't continue trying to fix it. hehe

You don't need to play BG1 again, unless you'll want to do so ;) - for instance if you want to play as another character than you did in your first playthrough.

You can just load a game before the final save (e.g. before the final battle in BG1). Or load a save from the start of chapter 6 (or seven). Then you can go to Ulgoth's Beard via the area just north or to the right of the Baldur's Gate Bridge.
And then you can access Durlag's Tower.

So... I decided to go to Durlag's Tower with my solo Cleric/Illusionist, but then I got to the Chessboard, and got my ass handed to me. Repeatedly. May have something to do with the fact that I installed SCS, but it's to the point where I'm becoming convinced it just isn't possible.
I've tried invisibility/non-detection combos, combined with jelly form (to combat dispels) an AC of -13-ish, stoneskins and mirror images - but I still don't have enough of an offence (wands and 2 APR at 20 STR) to beat down the king before my defensive buffs run out and I get horribly murdered.

Has anyone managed to beat the SCS chessboard with a solo character of 161k experience?

I did it quite recently. Fireballs seem to me to be the best answer to the chessboard. With a party it's easy to kill all the opposition before they even attack you, but I got caught the same way as you the first time I attempted it solo. However, with mirror image and stoneskin up you should definitely have enough time to kill everything before they get to you.
- put your elemental resistance up to 127% so that any damage will actually heal you (including your own fireballs)
- I found moving into a corner (between fireballs) useful to concentrate the opposition
- depending on the grouping you face you might be better off using scorchers than fireballs (they last 2 rounds and the damage from a wand scorcher is slightly higher than a wand fireball).

Well, whaddaya know! It ended up eating through most of my potion stock, including 3 invisibility potions I'd rather have saved for later, but it worked! I ended up using the wand of frost a lot instead, but yeah. Backing into a corner to reduce the number of persons beating on you, and then occasionally running away went a long way toward keeping me alive - even though the very first remove magic connected and removed just about every single buff I had up. The whole damn character picture was full of little icons! I thought magic resistance blocked dispels, but apparently not.
Anyway - thanks a lot for your suggestions! Now I can power through my crippling OCD and actually move on to BG2! Hopefully.
