Hey there!

First of all: Thanks a lot for your compliments! They mean alot to me, because you guys understand all the effort behind creating a small 5 min. cutscene like that. :)
I got my admission today. :) The woman from the university (for the lack of a better word ^^) liked my cutscene aswell, and she doesn't even know a lot about Dragon Age and the toolset so if I do not get hit by a car, which would prevent me from handing in the final cutscene next week I will be studying Gamedesing, starting this fall. Yay!
Thanks alot for all your help so far, I know it sounds "kitschy" but it would have been way harder without this forum and your help. :)

@Dahlia Lynn:

Yeah, I noticed the low volume of the voices aswell. :| I think I will try to solve that by reducing the volume of the sound emitters in the area editor. I just hope the song won't be too loud then, otherwise I'll need to modify the file with FMOD Designer again.
The very dim lighting at 1:12 isn't done on purpose. :) I fixed that aswell.

Now concerning the Camera Depth of Field - How do I use that? I haven't worked with it alot yet. The thing is, I do not know alot about cinematic theory. I've seen that DOF in use in some cutscenes but I wouldn't know where to use it mine. Do you have any recommendations?

More cuts... Hmm, thats right. :) I think I already know where to put them. And I'll try to use them to make the animations more smooth aswell. :)

So, once again: Thanks! :)
I will reupload the video again next week. :)

Hi Latiro :)

As far as Depth of Field is concerned, I can tell you what I tend to do for the most part though the best way to find out is to experiment by starting off with the default settings and work your way from there.

There are seven settings in the Depth of Field object inspector (info here)

I won't mention anything about far fade and near fade as I haven't been able to manipulate these correctly as of yet. For the most part the rest will do the job you need.

The setting I usually use in general when it comes to more confined small environments is:

Maxblur
set to 0.7

(in my opinion the larger and farther the area and closer the object is to the camera, the higher the blur)

Weight Blur
set to 1 or a bit less.

What you will want to experiment with will be the focal radius and focus distance, as these should provide the effect you are looking for.

Focus distance
refers how far away from the camera is the object you would like to focus on.

Focal radius
generally is the setting for how "wide" you want the focus area to encompass. (for more characters in a shot for example)

If you imagine an actual camera with a zoom lens, as you turn the lens  you focus on various objects depending on their distance from the camera. This would be the same thing rendering the stuff behind it somewhat blurred.

If you have one character that is close to the camera you could try setting focus distance to 1 and seeing if the character is sharp and clear. The same goes for radius. Try to find the setting where the objects you would like to focus on become clear and sharp as opposed to the rest of the objects in the shot.

By the way I am not sure if you have utilized this function, but if you click on two combined animations, right click and select add transition, you may have a smoother transition in some of the animations you have combined, limiting the amounts of forced camera cuts to hide the animation combos.

All of these by the way are the way I work and aren't neccessarily the "right" way to work. Each person develops their own preferences with time and experience ;)

In any case I wish you tons of luck in Game design study! I do wish I had that type of field when I went to school!!

Hey all,

I've created a short video based on some (very basic) cutscene work I did with the toolset and thought some of you might be interested in seeing it. I'm still in the process of learning the toolset, I've probably made around 20 short cutscenes in total now, but I find I am always learning more with each cutscene.

Btw I loved all the videos posted so far, excellent work, the scenes created by Beerfish made me laugh a lot, and the video posted by Latiro was very inspiring!. :-)

You can find my little creation here:

Very well done indeed.  Nice camera cutting from scene to scene, nice fx.  Great job!

Excellent work, positioning is key for something like those and you pulled it off perfectly.

Thanks beerfish :D -you are probably familiar at how much I *headdesked* doing that one...

Another thing that one should never overlook is the importance of camera positioning, shot balance, flow, continuity, musical timing and lighting aspects of a scene. I believe it's about communicating;  an emotion whatever it may be, a thought, a message, etc
It's truly amazing how the cutscene editor allows you this ability, the ability to envision something in your mind, then make it happen.

For this very reason Im going to give it a go - Ive downloaded Toolset and watching some tutorials - Not sure if its going to be all too hard and painstakingly long to do what I have in my mind to do - time will tell I guess.

Ive played with DAZ & Blender a little so I hope that helps some.... the key is finding the right tutorial that is simple enough for me to understand what ppl are saying - I have no tech background at all and so I get lost easily LOL

Oh well, gotta at least try :)

Sorry if I'm necroing an old thread, but wasn't sure where to post this sample here: Merchant of Rialto

It's a prequel tale of Ignacio, the Crow quest giver in DA:O, just using game recorded v/o. Hope you like it!

Thanks for sharing! It's really tough to gauge how many active DA Machinima creators there are out there and it's truly refreshing to see new material spring to the surface. I like Ignacio, heh. Very creative work :)

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! It is definitely hard to know how many folks are making DA machinima out there, and it'd be great to see more come through this thread again.
