So, I downloaded some spell improvement mod a while back.  It was nice to see certain spells like Wall of Perilous Flame redone so that they were actually useful.  However, Eldritch Doom is now broken with the overrides in place.  I found a .2da editor and took a look at the spells.2da for the mod files.

First let me explain how exactly the spell is broken.  What happens is that when you click a spot to drop the Eldritch Doom spell, the casting character runs right up to that spot, THEN drops the spell right on top of themselves.  The problem goes away when the override files are removed, and the stock spells.2da is used.

Now back to the .2da editor for a minute.  I fired it up, found the line that had all the parameters for ED, and noticed that the range was set to "P" for personal.  I changed it to M, which is the range listed in the spell description.  After doing so, I saved the changes to the spells.2da that came with the overrides and fired the game up to test the changes.  I was elated when, after selecting a spot within range to drop the spell, the character did not immediately run forward to that spot.  They simply turned toward the targeted location and began to cast from where they were standing.  My elation lasted about 2 seconds.  After the casting animation was completed, the spell effect dropped, once again, right on the character's head.

So what change do I need to make to the spells.2da file?  Is some setting in this .2da file currently the culprit, or is the bug somewhere else?

It seems that I've figured out a solution. After making the appropriate changes to the spells.2da, I removed the .ncs and .nss files associated with ED in the mod package, and now the spell functions normally. YEEHAW!

I have no idea what the mod was supposed to change with repect to ED anyway. As far as I knew, it functioned correctly when unmodded.

Hmm, after reading the .txt file that lists all the changes, it seems that the spell wasn't actually broken. ED was evidently intended to be centered on the caster, and was only supposed to damage enemies. I think I'll stick with the stock verson of ED.
