Fascinating how differently you can approach this dilemma. Some people consider who they'd rather keep for combat. Others decide according to what makes the most sense story-wise, considering Salarian casualties or romance options. Others simply pick the one they like better or rather hate.
I never once considered my combat options! And I just realized it never occurred to me that my choice had any impact on the Salarians, lol. Because I thought saving Kirrahe was the only thing you could influence. And that is taken care of before you make your choice regarding Ash/Kaidan...
I played ME1 three times. I saved Kaidan twice. Simply because I really like him. Screw you, Kaidan haters! *g* Plus he's my canon Shep's LI. I saved him with my male Shep who romanced Liara as well. Just couldn't kill him. My renegade Shep romanced Ash, so I had to sacrifice Kaidan.
I'm not particularly fond of Ash. I felt bad for killing her, though. I may not like her attitude much but she is the most realistic of all the characters. But the romance was awful! I think some the flirtatious dialogues where terribly written. Somehow I never quite got why they like each other. Everything seemed so forced. Still I'd like to see more of Ash in ME3.
Except for Zaeed, there's no character I'd gladly get rid of. I never once killed Wrex, even though I don't like the Krogan. Yeees, not everybody thinks they're awesome.

I mix metagame, roleplaying, and my own personal preferences.  And the combination came out in favor of Ash just about every time.  It's not that I dislike Kaidan.  I'm firmly "lukewarm" on Kaidan.  He has his moments, but generally meh.  And I played an Adept with Garrus and Wrex as squaddies, and sniper rifles to boot, so he was kind of...unuseful.

Because I wanted to sleep with her (little did I know that in Mass Effect 2 I really would've preferred Liara and therefore makes this argument invalid).

I felt the same about Zaeed as you until I won his loyalty without killing all the workers. His inferno grenade is fairly useful and though, like Kasumi, there's no conversation available to make him more fleshed out outside the loyalty mission, I came to like him. That all said, he is dispensible, all told, I just have a hate on him.

I've grown to like him more than I used to, he's got some good banter if you take him off the Normandy now and then and he's insanely useful on Haestrom and sanely useful everywhere else. I generally ignore the persuade at the end of his loyalty, though, and then have him escort the crew. I like the symmetry. Makes me feel like I've taught him something important in the intervening months.

So who tells the dead soldier to hold on, who apologises, and who says "die proud"? My mainShep's a paragon, but she always tells Kaidan to die proud. The "had to make a choice" line feels really insulting, like it was just about which marine you decided to save and the dead one fell short, not because you're a commander making a command decision for the good of the mission. I feel like the renegade choice respects them more, like, acknowledging they signed on for this and saying there'll be honor and meaning in their sacrifice.

Potential lesbian romance for my FemShep. Simple as that.

Sbarge's voice acting has grown on me. And Ashley has 3 sisters, so it's not like I erase an entire bloodline.

I usually let her die cuz I don´t really like her. Even if she has an interesting history...

Upsettingshorts reason (first answer) is pretty good though ^^

The thing that upsets me is that, if I let Kaidan alive, I´m adressed to as a woman on Horizon -.-"

That made me let Kaidan die instead of Ashley in a later playthrough xD

In my main playthrough Shepard sent Ashley with the Salarian team and had Kaidan work to prep the bomb. Obviously he did this without knowing that he'd have to make a choice at the end of the mission. When the end came and he had to make a decision he decided to save Kaidan not because he preferred Kaidan to Ashley (though he did) but because he couldn't risk the bomb falling into enemy hands and being disabled. It had to go off on schedule at all costs.

So Ashley died but the point I'm making is that if she'd been the one prepping the bomb he would have saved her.

Despite being mostly paragon my Shepard would have sacrificed both of their lives (in addition to his own) to destroy the facility and complete the mission.

Honestly? I saved Kaidan because he's hot. Image IPB And because Ashley is xenophobic and slightly annoying.

I was a little torn.

I picked Ashley the first time because I wasn't sure if I had gotten mself into a love triangle or not and I wanted to futher that story line, and because Kaidan was boring and I NEVER used him.

On the other hand I thought Ashley was a bit of a racist ditch (Infact one of the factors that went into saving the council was that she pleaded against it when I brought her along) and the fact that Kaidan was one of my highest ranking subordinate and one of my best friends.

Saved Ashley because she had a better combat rating. My female Sheppard has started a romance with Kelley Chambers in ME2 ;)

Playthrough 1: Kaidan would not stop hitting on me, so I nuked him.

Playthrough 2: Played as a dude this time, romanced Ashley (and regretted it) but let her live.

Playthrough 3: Kaidan balanced out my squad better, so I saved him. However, at that point I'd talked to these guys enough that I liked them both and was actually a bit remorseful that I had to choose between them.

Pretty simple. I sent Kaiden to lead a team with Kirrahe because he is an officer and been trained in leading a company. When it came to decision time I could secure the AA tower or the bomb site. Although I am told the bomb cannot be disarmed, I am not going to take that chance. Therefore I secure the bomb site. Ashley lives.

Shepard always means to come back for them. Always. That's just the sort of Commander I'm playing. Even the Butchers of Torfan are trying to make up for that carnage.
It just never works out. I have to kind of re-write the final sequence in my head to look more like Jack's LM in ME2 - the SR1 is barely meters ahead of the shockwave and melting the thruster couplings in her haste. That's the only time Shepard's leaving someone behind - when it's them or the mission.

I always save Ashley because:

1.She has actually grown on me.
2. We share the same birthday.
3.I love her fiery personality.
4.She IS my Shep's LI. My Shep made the decision to pursue her romantically the second he laid eyes on her on Eden Prime.
5.She felt responsible for what happened to Shep on Eden Prime AND she was there when Shep regained consciousness.
6.She's definitely not afraid to voice her opinion on any subject.
7.I think that Kimberly Brooks is an excellent voice actor.
8.My Shep found out that she really is a "hellcat" off the field just as she said.
9.There was no way that I was going to condemn her to death and then face her family knowing that I could have saved her..........and finally number 10......

I really, really hope that an opportunity presents itself in ME3 where Ashley will have the chance to choke the s**t out of Miranda.

Note: I don't hate Kaidan at all. In fact, I think that he is an okay dude....I just had to make a choice...and I chose Ashley.

I never got why this was supposed to be a Big Choice.

Play-through 1: Sent Ash with the Salarians. Kaiden with the bomb. Went back to Kaiden because I wanted to make sure bomb went off.

Subsequent: Save whatever character gives you the most balanced squad. My Adept saved Ash. My Infiltrator saved Kaiden.

Even if you do Virmire "last", that squadmate still has to go to Ilos and then back to the Citadel with you. No point to saving either if they are going to sit on the ship.

Why is it that Kaidan or Ashley get so much hate from people? Ashley's neither extreme nor obnoxious with her views, and Kaidan isn't all that bad, either; he's a professional bro. A loyal lieutenant.

Anyways, I usually save Ashley, but I'll be saving Kaidan in my next playthrough. It just makes more sense to me to have the Sentinel arm a makeshift nuke than it does to have a common soldier arm it.

I saved Ashley - the first time through, it was because she was my LI. But, in replaying and meta-gaming, I still pick Ashley - because she's with the Salarians and saving her means saving THEM - BIG interstellar relations political points(!!!). And it always seems more logical to send Ashley with the Salarians - Kaiden's a tech and should stay with the bomb, Ashley's a ground-pounder and is better suited to go with the commandos.

Initially I saved Ashley, because I didn't really care about either one, but liked her more and slightly wanted to mercykill him after turning him down for Liara. In my canon playthrough, however, I sacrificed Ashley, and that actually led me to liking both of them more; Kaidan was no longer just disposable to me, and the line about "leaving a friend to die on Virmire" felt like it meant more with Ashley.
