I have a tough time choosing who to save on every playthrough. Mostly because I don't have any real interest in either one. I probably ought to just flip a coin and move on, but I have to rationalize who I save evrytime I do it.

This last playthrough I saved Ashley because I find her interactions with Liara entertaining, plus I like rejecting her to her face.

On my main playthrough I saved kaidan, but I also didn't have a clue what was going to happen.

I saved a love interest for the first time on Virmire today because I wanted the achievement.

Normally I prefer to go back to the bomb for the same gender soldier. However, I'm doing my level 60 playthrough, and felt I might as well do it this time. Ashley survived, and I got the Paramore achievement.

I finished a playthrough over the weekend. Didn't romance anyone, but I still ended up saving Ash over Kaiden. I actually liked both characters so it hurt to lose Kaiden and I'm sure it would hurt to lose Ash.

I sent Ash to help the STG group to boost their firepower a bit. (Actually, I found Ash to be pretty good for the later missions, I'd been using Wrex mostly to get the Krogan Ally achievement but Ash's combat abilities are awesome. She nails Geth Hoppers and Sappers like they were sporting clays at a skeet shooting match.) Kaiden was sent to handle the nuke, since it was an officer's assignment and his biotics/tech could probably hold off any geth.

I chose Ash mainly to save the STG survivors. I don't know if the STG actually dies if you go save whomever is at the bomb so I might have to come up with another reason on future playthroughs. Ashley did seem willing to die to "rehabilitate" her family name, but I never saw that as necessary. What she needed was a CO who would judge her on her actual performance not because her grandfather was the only general to surrender to aliens.

(I would guess when Ashley mentions her family history I find myself thinking of a scene from Ashes of Victory by David Weber where Honor Harrington "rehabilitates" a disgraced officer whose only mistake was giving good advice to a completely worthless senior officer, who promptly relieved her, banished her from his flagship and went off and got himself and most of his command killed ignoring said officer's advice. All Honor does is make that officer her Operations officer and Commander Andrea Jaruwalski does a good job so her career is back on track.)

Despite the choice I think the background music on the Normandy is utterly depressing and I'm almost glad to hit the galaxy map to get warped back to the Citadel and watch the Council be foolish.

i saved ahsley 99% of the time because im a sucker for a cute brunette. although on my "perfect ME1 save file" i killed ashley because i knew miranda was hotter, and if kaiden were to be in ME3,he would have alot better abilities then just concussion shot. vain, yes, but i gotta save the galaxy somehow.

i mean imagin shep + miranda + kaiden. prolly be the best squad setup by a long shot.

Unlike a lot of people, I was rational with my desicion. Kaidan was looking after the bomb, so I left him on Virmire. I was fearing that if I rescue Kaidan, there would be nothing stopping a sneaky geth from disarming it after we left.

Then afterwards I realized it makes no difference and I was sad :(

Initially I was pursuing the thing with Ashley. On subsequent playthroughs Kaidan just got rather annoying.

If bioware wanted to make my decision tough it'd be Liara vs Ashley or Garrus vs Ashley or Garrus vs Liara.

I've had two playthroughs.

First one, soldier, I saved Ashley who was also the LI.

Second one, Adept, I saved Kaiden. Ashley was still the LI.

My reasoning for the second one, is to sort of add more of a tragic flair to him, open him up for one of the new LIs in Mass Effect 2 (I made that account after it was first announced). Adding onto that, I had my Adept develop a friendship with Kaiden that (in my mind, at least, because the Soldier seemed to actually run out of dialog quicker on the other game) was built stronger and more easily based on the fact that they're both biotics.

I'm actually writing a short fan fic soon on the emotional response of my second Shepard to finding Ashley's old section of the Normandy SR-1 at the crash site.

First off, I'm new to the forums here and if such a long-winded post is uncommon and/or obnoxious... well, my bad.

When I came across this choice for the first time I sat there staring at my TV screen for a good 5-10 minutes. I think I ultimately knew that I was going to save Ashley. Unlike most people it seems, I actually found her character to be a breath of fresh air of sorts; perhaps the most human character in a story that likes to explore humanity. However, Mass Effect was pretty much my first exposure to the world of RPGs so the sudden realization that I was actually making a life or death decision in regards to my teammates was new to me. I'm not talking about "Oh, I chose not to use that spell buff so my Ranger died now I failed the mission" kind of decision: I mean like an actual battlefield choice about who lives or dies.

This $%&# be heavy.

About a million different reasons and rationalizations for letting one or the other die ran through my head, ranging from matters of rank to usefulness in combat and yes, admittedly romance paths. My final decision was based on the grounds that even though this is the future where gender roles are less defined, my personal sense of chivalry couldn't reconcile the choice of leaving a female character to die. (Female forum members who are so inclined may feel free to start the insults at "chauvinist pig" and continue from there.) I also determined that I didn't want to be the kind of Commander that made decisions based on rank alone. Kaiden was an officer who knew full well what he was getting into when he set the timer on that bomb, but Ash's place wasn't to make such decisions during battle. She's a soldier, and I deemed it necessary to look after my soldiers.

What? I like this game, stop looking at me like that.

I like Ashley and romanced her (though she gets kicked to the curb by Jack). For my male ME1 character, he was a Paragon but I role played that he was also a bit of a closet human supremacist, so Ashley fit right into that.

Beside, there's just something annoying about Kaiden. When I played a female char in ME1, I romanced Liara and saved Ashley again.

I've always hated the xenophobic mood of Ashely, but even more the Elvish hairstyle of Kaiden. xD

Speeching seriously... I've always found Alenko the unique boring member of the team, it was like it has "expendable" written in front since the beginning.

Nice roleplaying, though. Shep doesn't know what the player knows, after all.

I was also rational, but I did pretty much the exact opposite of you. I had Kaiden lead the other team because he is an officer. I went back to the bomb to slaughter the geth reinforcements so they couldn't disarm it.

My main, female Shepard saved Ashley, so I suppose my rebuttle would have to be "Sisters before Misters!"

I'll refrain from using the other version of that line :innocent:

I see no reason for you to be ashamed. I thank you for what you said. I too found Ashley's characters refreshing, which I would say is my number one reason for saving her through most playthroughs. They may say this about every other female character in a game now, but I feel, truthfully, with girls in games being passive companions, oversexed, little to no substance...that she really stands out. Not even as a woman; maybe I don't play enough games, but I haven't seen many video games period that was carrying family guilt, had faith to carry her and actual poetry to express her. No offense to their fans, but I found Miranda and Jack...off putting. Too extreme, too much. Ashley was...just right for me. She was complex, but not pretentious or overwhelming. I felt she and my Shepard were sisters, and I enjoyed her romance when I played again as a male.

I suppose I would be a hypocrite to say I appreciate chivalry when offered...I would want to be treated the same, yet I sure wouldn't mind a door being opened for me. The only thing about Virmire I've ever found offensive is when people say they wished they could have left both or...they wanted the one of the opposite sex to stop flirting. That's not even fair.

There's a lot weighing against her, I've heard a lot of good reason for saving Kaiden instead, and I've gone for him with one of my (three) Shepards. Another reason I often feel more compelled to save her more often is because...I feel she would benefit the most from living, personally. Seeing what happens could help her grow more. She could die with some of those hostile feelings within her, have the shame lifted from her familiy postumously so she couldn't enjoy it herself, or she could experience the rewards of her efforts herself.

Obviously I have very little insight on a military perspective, but hey...I'm pretty sure in a real war, people don't bother the commander with personal favors, so yeah.

Ashley every time. Kaidan was a bro, and I liked him a lot, but "women and children first". Even if the said women are actually *tougher* than the man in question.

Overall, I liked Ashley. Though some aspects of her character grated on me. But almost every character in the game did this at some point. To me, that's what makes a good character.

When the decision appeared, I was in a fairly objective position. I had no LI in the first game and I liked both equally. In the end I chose Kaidan because I wanted to save Kirrahe and Kaidan was the higher ranking officer and a biotic.

While this wasn't a big deciding factor, it also helped that Kaidan was more accepting of aliens. I think thats a good quality to have, especially when you work with them on a daily basis.

I kind of felt like Kaiden had more to gain by surviving, he seemed to have had a pretty difficult life and it would be more fair to let him continue living. Whereas if Ashley dies she redeems the family name in an act of bravery and sacrifice.

I kill Ashley because I find her annoying and abrasive. Also, she lacks combat utility. But I'll be honest, it's mostly because I don't like her. If I found her personality more appealing I might keep her around despite the lack of combat utility.

For RP reasons, I always go back to the person with the bomb, because their position is being overrun and if the enemy manages to defuse the bomb, then that's mission failure. But yeah. I always leave Kaidan with the bomb.

Edit: I keep seeing saving Kirahe as a rationale for saving the character on the fire team. But I always send Kaidan with the bomb and go back for him and Kirahe is always on my ship afterward.
