I don't like Kaidan. I think I have only 1 ME2 character where he is alive.

I love both of them, and thus hate the Virmire choice. (Though I'll freely admit it took me a while to warm up to each character, and how well I like them depends on the Shep I'm playing...same as anyone, I suppose). As the oldest of four children though, I saved Ashley during my first playthough, and all but one playthrough thereafter, and have never regretted it.

My 4 playthroughs before ME2, I played FemShep only. Saved Kaiden every time because of the romance. Never romanced Liara.

My 3 playthroughs after ME2, I played one MaleShep (most recent playthrough. For the MaleShep, I saved Ashley because of two reasons. One was because of the romance, the other reason why is because I saw "Hey, Kaiden....Wtf?? Kaiden in Pheonix Armor??" and then him using an assault rifle on Horizon while I just go "Why not use your biotics? Besides, since when have you used an Assault Rifle in ME1?". Ashley just seemed like a better choice in terms of the fact that those scenes favored Ashley and the fact that I like Thane and Garrus better than Kaiden, who I like better than Jacob......Unless you count how I like Jacob in an airlock. Then I like him lots. "Bye, Mr Priiiize."

... Simple?

What about the legions of female NPCs that you must slaughter throughout both games?

I play a male Shepard and send Kaidan with the salarians (he volunteers for a probable suicide mission) but when it occures that I have to choose between him and Ash i save Kaidan because that way I can save more people.

....sigh why can't people read between the lines. The internet is suppose ot be free of political correctness and absolute handle of the english language.

Cannot see a woman sacrifice herself for me or someone else.

Now since is a bit weird you can't make the dissertion between those whoa re trying to kill me and those trying to save me... I'll draw the picture.

A- Ash is taking bullets for me
B- The rest are trying to put bullets through me.

:P ta-da:wizard:

Nah but serously on a non sarcastic note... is all about whether they are trying to kill me, or trying to help me.

Kaiden. Because of the romance Very dissapointed in the FemShep romances in ME2. Tried Thane...but it was dissapointing. I watched the others on YouTube and it seems only the MaleShep had a somewhat lukewarm scene (but only with Miranda) So when I played thru again I stayed faithful to Kaiden (MUCH better romace in ME1) Hoping he comes back in ME3 or FemShep at least gets a decent romance. Hey Bioware...girls like the sexy stuff too you know!!!!

I usually send Kaidan with the Salarians. As an officer he should be better qualified in handling the group and coordinating the attack, but then I left with "feeling I have" to save Ashley because she is at the nuke. No matter what that nuke must go off, and since she is under attack the nuke must be protected at all costs.

Ash was my first Shepard's romantic interest, so I figured it might be a good idea to not let her die.

Kaiden was with me from the start and I started to like him more than Ash.I picked Ash as my LI(even though I liked Liara better) but I let her die to add some sort of dramatic moment to my Shepard.

Not a big fan of either of them....but I like Kaiden best of the two. Soooo, three playthroughs with Kaiden and one with Ashley. Actually my Ash save can be blamed on another player~we had an agreement, he let Sidonis live in one game, I had to save Ash as compensation. It was the most frustrating things we could think of. (no offence Ash fans)

I play adept, a pure biotic.  I roll with Tali and Ashley so I have a pure fighter, and pure tech in my squad for a balanced party.  Call it a tactical reason.  If I felt lacking in biotics or tech I'd of saved Kaiden instead.

I started a new playthrough to see new choices and how it would affect ME 2 and ME 3, but I just couldn't kill Ashley, even when see was not my LI. Kaidan is pretty boring.

If the Mass Effect movie will be about ME 1, then I think they let Ashley survive. Not just because she's in ME 2 if you choose a new game with a new MaleShep, and that she's a "poster" character for Mass Effect, but because she's looks to have a deeper role in the Mass Effect universe.

Thus, I see Ashleys death very emotional and poetic when a news broadcast reports that Ashley Williams has been decorated for her service by both the salarian and turian governments, receiving the salarian Silver Dagger and turian Nova Cluster medals, becoming the first human to receive these awards and being quoted as saying "human or alien, we're all just animals".

Actually, the nuke was impervious to attack or disarming. Hence, Ash or Kaidan rushing to arm it after the geth arrived. I think the vulnerability of the bomb being rendered useless is irrelevant.

I save Kaiden every time:

1. I really dislike Ashley's character, which makes sense as a Liara fan.

2. Kaiden is a superior officer.

3. Saving Kaiden is tactically more viable because grunts are a dime a dozen.

4. After a certain stunt pulled in ME2, punching out Kaiden in ME3 would be much more fullfilling.

Ashley had a personality (not necessarily one I liked, but it was there). Kaiden was just... meh. I didn't get anything from him, he was so bland. (Maybe it was because I didn't romance him, but that shouldn't be a requirement to get to know the character, right?)

you don't need to romance Kaidan to get to know him. he's just more subtle and professional then Ashley is. just talk to him and take him around and then listen to some conversational gems (not to mention he's an incredibly versatile character for basically any squad/character specialization combination you can think of:) )

that said, pretty much every character in ME suffers from: "must romance to get more dialogue options" decease. Garrus in ME 2 is especially bad when it comes to that.

Number 4 has given me more reason to save Kaidan.

I saved Ashley because I had a friend that is very much like her. Also, Ash is always pushing herself to be recognized, and I didn't want her sacrificing herself just because of what happened to her family. However, I save Kaidan purely for the reason to give Ashley the recognition sometimes.

I save Ashley for two reasons.

1. It makes the most sense to send her with the Task Force and Kaidan with the bomb due to their particular skillset. Saving Ashley means I save the Salarians as well. That's the greater good.

2. Kaidan is completely uninteresting the entire game, and his romance is terrible. But damn the one thing he does incredible is die nobly. Not at all being sarcastic here. He sacrifices himself for the greater good and does so with class. Not letting him die on Vermire would cheat him out of his best moment really.
