My 3 playthroughs after ME2, I played one MaleShep (most recent playthrough. For the MaleShep, I saved Ashley because of two reasons. One was because of the romance, the other reason why is because I saw "Hey, Kaiden....Wtf?? Kaiden in Pheonix Armor??" and then him using an assault rifle on Horizon while I just go "Why not use your biotics? Besides, since when have you used an Assault Rifle in ME1?". Ashley just seemed like a better choice in terms of the fact that those scenes favored Ashley and the fact that I like Thane and Garrus better than Kaiden, who I like better than Jacob......Unless you count how I like Jacob in an airlock. Then I like him lots. "Bye, Mr Priiiize."

... Simple?
What about the legions of female NPCs that you must slaughter throughout both games?

....sigh why can't people read between the lines. The internet is suppose ot be free of political correctness and absolute handle of the english language.
Cannot see a woman sacrifice herself for me or someone else.
Now since is a bit weird you can't make the dissertion between those whoa re trying to kill me and those trying to save me... I'll draw the picture.
A- Ash is taking bullets for me
B- The rest are trying to put bullets through me.
Nah but serously on a non sarcastic note... is all about whether they are trying to kill me, or trying to help me.

If the Mass Effect movie will be about ME 1, then I think they let Ashley survive. Not just because she's in ME 2 if you choose a new game with a new MaleShep, and that she's a "poster" character for Mass Effect, but because she's looks to have a deeper role in the Mass Effect universe.
Thus, I see Ashleys death very emotional and poetic when a news broadcast reports that Ashley Williams has been decorated for her service by both the salarian and turian governments, receiving the salarian Silver Dagger and turian Nova Cluster medals, becoming the first human to receive these awards and being quoted as saying "human or alien, we're all just animals".

I usually send Kaidan with the Salarians. As an officer he should be better qualified in handling the group and coordinating the attack, but then I left with "feeling I have" to save Ashley because she is at the nuke. No matter what that nuke must go off, and since she is under attack the nuke must be protected at all costs.
Actually, the nuke was impervious to attack or disarming. Hence, Ash or Kaidan rushing to arm it after the geth arrived. I think the vulnerability of the bomb being rendered useless is irrelevant.

1. I really dislike Ashley's character, which makes sense as a Liara fan.
2. Kaiden is a superior officer.
3. Saving Kaiden is tactically more viable because grunts are a dime a dozen.
4. After a certain stunt pulled in ME2, punching out Kaiden in ME3 would be much more fullfilling.

that said, pretty much every character in ME suffers from: "must romance to get more dialogue options" decease. Garrus in ME 2 is especially bad when it comes to that.

Number 4 has given me more reason to save Kaidan.
I saved Ashley because I had a friend that is very much like her. Also, Ash is always pushing herself to be recognized, and I didn't want her sacrificing herself just because of what happened to her family. However, I save Kaidan purely for the reason to give Ashley the recognition sometimes.

1. It makes the most sense to send her with the Task Force and Kaidan with the bomb due to their particular skillset. Saving Ashley means I save the Salarians as well. That's the greater good.
2. Kaidan is completely uninteresting the entire game, and his romance is terrible. But damn the one thing he does incredible is die nobly. Not at all being sarcastic here. He sacrifices himself for the greater good and does so with class. Not letting him die on Vermire would cheat him out of his best moment really.
