Your honest reason for saving ashley or Kaiden?

*NCLanceman's MaleShepard has to make a difficult decision... which really isn't that difficult.*
Shepard: *flat* Oh god. Now I've gotta save either Kaiden or Ash...
Kaiden: It's cool. I've basically dealt with my demons.
Ashley: I want to liiiiiiiiiiiiiive! I've got my family name to clear! I want to see this thing through with Saren! I wanna tell you how much I care and changed throughout this voyage!
Kaiden: She has a good point you know.
Shepard: Kaiden... come on. Give yourself a chance here. I even gave you the nuke because I thought you'd make a pretty cool crack about "explosive solutions" since you used to be Scorch and Republic Commando was awesome.
Kaiden: Nah... I'm... I'm good. I'm the quiet dignity guy here.
Shepard: *flat* That only really works if the quiet guy has given some real reason for people to empathize. *secures helmet* Ash! Get ready for pickup!
Virmire, this time with NCLanceman's Female Shepard
Shepard: I hope you realize the only reason I'm saving you is because my male twin left Ashley for Tali and there really shouldn't be a gap in delicious drama between the two.
Kaiden: It's okay. I care about your feelings.
Shepard: I liked you much better when I was a guy.
Kaiden: It's not going to break regulations or anything if I actually admit I have feelings or anything, is it?
Shepard: I hope you realize I'm going to leave you for Garrus at the first available opportunity.
Kaiden: That... doesn't quite answer my question.
Shepard: *facepalm, slow exhale* I need a drink. *deep breath* I swear to Almighty Christ I'm not going to report you to anyone. Jesus.
Kaiden: Good. Cause I care. A lot.
Shepard: This would've been so much easier if I could go gay for Ashley.

First time, I saved Ash, because my Shep was in love with Kaidan and I thought his death would make the story more dramatic.
Subsequently, I saved Kaidan, because my Shep didn't actually emote much over his death, and it ultimately wasn't nearly as dramatic as I hoped. Plus post-grounding locker scene is sweet.
I'm always amazed by how many people kill Character X because they hate them. I mean, I get that roleplaying is detached from real life and all, but it hardly seems like a healthy approach for anyone...

Ashley seemed to think it was all about her, but at least the STG team acknowledged what I did and promised to report it.

yah it really came down to saving the STG team versus Ashley or Kaiden for me on my first playthrough. Then I just put whoever I want to save with the STG team. The person with the bomb dies. Figures that it would be a quick maybe a painless death.

Killing off a character in a computer RPG is typically the only way you won't have to see them again at all. Even if you never talk to Kaiden he's right there at the console, across the mess from Sick Bay, just waiting. In this regard, "kill" means "remove from my experience". It's more like not going to a party because someone you can't personally stand is going to be there, or refusing to invite someone you can't stand to your party.
When you combine this with the game telling you "Choose one to die, Shepard" (million points if you've heard that line in a CRPG and can tell me which one) every single time you play to a certain point, it's a pretty logical outcome. You have to get one person out of your party, there's one person in your party you don't like. It's a problem that solves itself.
None of the above should be taken as more relevant than the fact that THEY ARE NOT REAL PEOPLE AND NOTHING YOU DO TO THEM MAKES A TINY LICK OF DIFFERENCE OUTSIDE THE GAME UNIVERSE OR CONSERVATIVE FEARMONGERING ON THE CORRUPTING POWER OF THE VIDYA GAME. It's not even as if this is some kind of Heavy Rain-esque murder simulator and you have to grip and vigorously shake the controller to strangle the character while his digitized visage struggles, gasps, and turns blue in high-def right in front of your eyes, clawing feebly at your hands until his eyes go dim. You push the thumbstick towards the name of the NPC you prefer and you push A.

I mean, I understand that Kaidan, but I would have slapped a medal on his suit for killing that a-hole of a turian.
Plus: I didn't like the other romance-option for m-shep. I like Liara, but somehow she didn't hit my taste.

No need to get so angry simply because your point of view is one that I can understand at a verbal level (you explained it well) but never at an emotional one (even if my character kills a villian, it won't be because of dislike but for story reasons).Christmas Ape wrote...

Also no need to play the conservative fearmongering card. Personally, I don't believe that any book, film, or videogame can persuade a person to do something they don't want to do. Having studied the history of literature, I am aware that people thought the novel was a corrupting experience when it first emerged as an art form. But the trouble with any of these theories is that one is always so worried about other people. "Others" are weak enough to be swayed by the immersion of self in a fictional narrative; it is assumed that "I" am not. In general, I think that theories that exalt the self above the other tend to be props for the ego, and thus flawed.
Bear in mind that I already said my decision in my first playthrough was based on drama. Does that mean I think that drama is a source of real-life moral inspiration when it comes to deciding who should live and who should die? Of course not. But drama is one of the foremost factors that interest me in fiction; that's just how my mind works. It happens that yours seems to be dissimilar in this respect, but hopefully you can tolerate my difference.

From a pragmatic standpoint, I might have been better off saving Ashley, since I haven't made very good use of Kaidan's biotics. On the other hand, Ashley was getting on my nerves coming on to Commander Shepherd--terribly unprofessional. But in game, it was just save one or save many.

Let's see... my canon Shepard is a spacer war hero paragon infiltrator who had Ashley as his LI. I knew that at some point, I was going to have to choose between the two, but didn't know exactly when. So When Captain Kirrahee asked for a volunteer to lead the distraction team, I gave him Kaidan because I thought I was sacrificing him. But Kaidan being a Lieutenant, it also made military sense to assign him to lead a unit.
Later, when I had to choose between rescueing Ash at the nuke site or Kaidan at the AA tower, I decided to save Ash, but my Shepard's report states that he did it to insure that no geth could disarm the device in the event Chief Williams was overwhelmed...
I like to think my Shepard's trying very hard to convince himself he did it to save the nuke, even if deep down he did it to save the girl.

Honest reason? He's cute and I just couldn't kill my LI. I still feel bad about Ash, though.
