Your honest reason for saving ashley or Kaiden?

But.. I couldn't leave the STG operatives behind and had to leave Ash. I always save the STG as I feel they earn it.
Over subsequent playthroughs I've really come to dislike Ash more (religious xenophobe) and leave her behind.

1.He was the one arming the bomb. I wanted to make sure mission suceeds.Going away from bomb and normandy to grab ashley didnt sound smart
2.Kaiden doesnt hate on aliens
3.I didnt want to acidently trigger romance with ashley
That beign said both of them never were in my squad once I got Garrus and Tali

For me, I tend to give out the jobs based on what I think would make for the most interest for the particular version of Shepard I'm playing at the time. Being forced to sacrifice someone s/he has developed feelings for for the sake of the mission or the idea that Shepard may have let his or her personal feelings influence the decision without even really realising it, and so on.

I sent Kaidan to arm the nuke since he was more tech oriented, and when Ash and the Salarians were being overrun I decided to save them because it was a choice between saving one (Kaidan) or half a dozen. It was about getting the most amount of my team out alive as was possible. While the Salarians may not have been crew members on the Normandy, they were part of Shep's team for that mission. That, and I figured even if Kaidan was in danger of being overrun he could still detonate the nuke.

Kaidan can be persuaded to mistrust aliens (though I think its only possible for femshep - I never renegade him myself, so I don't know for sure, but that's' what I've heard).
saving salarians depends on you taking out specific objectives while en-route to your goal, presumably Ashley and Kirrahe split up, leading different teams, I believe there were 3 salarian distraction teams, not one. so even if you come back to the bomb site, as long as you've helped them out before, you will have saved them.
just wanted to mention this.

1. I hate Ashley's voice
2. I Love Raphael Sbarge's voice (CARTH!!!!!)
3. I prefer Kaidan in combat
These are just my opinions

Based on the characters, I found Ashley to have a more interesting background even if she is religious (has an interesting but naive reason in my view) and suspicious of aliens (with very good reason). Kaiden I found less well developed and not as interesting.
My preferred squadmates are Wrex (for combat & biotics) and Tali (for tech plus decryption/electronics as needed). Sometimes use Garrus or Liara.
That all said, I sent Ashley with the Salarians and Kaiden with the bomb. Saved Ashley as Kaiden activated the bomb and Kirrahe indicated it would be very difficult to stop once activated. Also meant I got to save the salarians (and make nice - my Shepherd supported working with aliens).
I considered developing a romance with her but went with Liara. On both walkthroughs for the same character. Maybe try something different on a new character.

1) Chose her as my romance interest. Difficult choice to....both her and T'Soni had some very appealing character traits. Very bad reason to decide who to save, though. I like her poetic side; many real soldiers are big Tennyson and Kipling fans for a reason. Her religious faith wasn't a factor in the decision, but it is something I like about her.
2) When I first played through, I knew that there was a possibility I could make a choice where everyone dies. That turned out wrong in this case, but when my choices were "save the nuke demo team and Williams" or "save the STG and Kaidan", I was concerned that Williams would be forced to detonate the nuke early and everyone would end up toast.

I saved Ashley because killing Carth once wasn't enough.
LMFAO!!!
Now...
I initially saved Kaidan because I wanted to give Williams the peace she seemed to want in avenging her family's name.
But, when I did my final playthrough (before my ME2 import), I saved Ash because I liked her as a character and, if it wasn't for Liara, she definitely would've been a LI.
I'm happy I did, b/c it looks like there aren't going to be any serious damage-dealing soldier types making it from ME2 into ME3, so if she's playable, she's gonna be more useful to me than Kaidan would.
Of course, as any good ME fan would, I have several playthroughs where I saved Kaidan instead, just to experience it in a different way.

That being said, the reason I save Ashley is because my male engineer needed a soldier, and she was his love interest, and I thought Ashley was an interesting character and played by a talented actress. The female Shepard who saved Ashley was the same class as Kaidan, so he was redundant. My female soldier saved Kaidan because I liked Kaidan's character, he was her LI, and Ashley was redundant.

In universe, Kaiden is the more valuable resource. As a previous poster pointed out, he's had more training (as an alliance officer versus a foot soldier). He's a biotic (which is an incredibly important strategic resource).
Ashley is a foot soldier. From a strategic point of view, Kaiden has a lot of Alliance resources invested in him. Ultimately, it's a lot easier to replace Ashley than Kaiden.
However, I rarely play Ash or Kaiden. I find that Wrex is a better tank (biotic barrier + health regen). Liara is a better biotic. Garrus and Tali are better techs. I usually use squadmates for their abilities, as the ME1 combat AI is not exactly helpful. On my soldier playthrough, my squad is Liara/Tali.

That said my preferred Shepard is the default one. The story and interactions make the most sense and I actually enjoy playing as a Soldier more then the other classes. So there are a number of things I take into consideration.
(Lots of me yaking, skip to bottom to get to final point)
-Most important is which character is the most helpful in terms of utility for playing the game. As a Soldier generally there isn't much use for Ashley, and it requires that your other squadmate must a tech. Kaidan really is the better choice and has abilities make him a much useful squadmate. However Kaidan is rather frail and Ashley can survive a lot more punishment. So Ashley has that going for her at least. Hopefully in ME3 they will have a better balance of powers, so that either one is a good choice. Assuming they are in ME3 as squadmates.
*Also at the time of me writing this it is unclear if Ashley/Kaidan will be in any ME2 DLC and what effects that will have.
-The next deciding factor is who to save on a personal/story basis. Frankly I like both characters, more so then most ME2 characters despite ME2 being a more character driven game. I like Kaidan since he's a very level-headed guy and is a good officer. I generally agree with and share his perspective on things. I also like Ashley because she's a realist and genuinely believable character. She's an example soldier and it's nice to talk to someone who's honest. While I do like Kaidan more, Ashley IMO has a lot more to live for. Kaidan doesn't have a family depending on him or anyone special. Kaidan is also older and wiser for the most part. Ashley on the other hand is still relatively young. Also the fact she feels the need to vindicate her family, even by sacrificing herself, shows she really is still young and in-need. I'd like to see Ashley do more with her life and truly restore her family's name.
-Last and least crucial is who does what in the mission. While it seems more reasonable to have Kaidan arm the bomb, he's also a far better option to send with the STG. Really arming the bomb shouldn't be difficult, which is all they should have to do. I prefer to send Kaidan with the STG since he'd be better for co-ordinating efforts between teams as an officer. He also has less issue working with aliens. Though Ashley probably would be just as good at providing support in combat. So it's really a toss up.
When it comes down to the final choice I prefer to go to the bomb site itself. Making sure the bomb goes off should be your top priority. While I do like to save everyone that I can, saving the STG should be a secondary objective. They are the distraction team afterall and their is job is to hold off the enemy, even if that means they end up dying. I also prefer the fight at the bomb site since it's a bit more challenging in that there is a Geth Prime. Also it makes a lot more sense Saren would go to the bomb site generally, rather then falling for the diversion. So it also my preference to face Saren at the thermal taps rather then the AA tower. However it is true military protocol generally says that you should save Officers over Enlisted personnel.
The other thing for me is that while the bomb likely can't be disabled, a Geth ship could easily move it away to protect the facility. Which would make the whole mission pointless.
Another thing is it looks weird for male Shepard to save Kaidan at the bomb site. I never do this cause it looks really odd for Shepard to pick up Kaidan on his one shoulder. It's more believable for Shepard to pick up Ashley this way. If I do save Kaidan it will always and only be at the AA tower. However I have no presentation issue letting him die heroically with the bomb or simply leaving him behind at the AA tower. So in that sense Ashley is more likely to be saved. And really when it comes right down to it I prefer the whole situation of going back to the bomb saving Ashley before she gets killed and then fighting off Saren. Also the whole dangling off the tower ledge seems a bit too over the top and why wouldn't Saren just throw Shepard off at that point?
So when it comes down to everything I save Ashley at the bomb site.
While I do like Kaidan more and find him to be a bit more useful, I always feel worse for letting Ashley die. Kaidan seems more at peace with facing his own mortality.

Today, just now, I saved Kaiden... but then I back and saved Ash once again.
And I honestly don't know why. Now I'm trying to figure, and I guess that save her make me feel less worst. Nothing more. I do really feel bad when whoever of them die and you gotta handle the music playing for a couple time in the game
> Track 26 of the OST / I love and hate this song.
Maybe I'm just alienated and "have to save the woman". But feels strange anyway.
I would like to know in the most of time, who is the most saved, for womans that have played.
Also reading what has been said here, make me see that I hadn't consider any of the things like "the character is more boring" or xenophobia/religious stuff. Anyway I'll still try to figure out why I saved Ash, cause I don't prefer any of them.
