I have to agree with most of the priority settings here.

Although Kaiden was my LI or will be in all three games I try not to let that influence my decision.

For me it was simple and I really don't understand how people see it otherwise. The salarian group NEEDED a combat expert. They needed Ash. The bomb needed a tech expert. Seriously think an average marine is capable of activating a nuke bomb. Plus the bomb was a makeshift bomb so it was not like push green button and go.

Furthermore, although my canon Shepard is save everybody type of goon. It was apparent that making sure the bomb went of was mission goal. It wasn't a man vs. women argument. In the military, people will die to reach said goal. Why I consider my Shep Paragade. If you go around saving everybody, you won't save the world from the Reapers

However, I really hope the flush out more on Kaiden. He isn't really dull but he should have more. Plus I feel like his only friend or family is Shep. So said your only friend sends you to die

Well my reasoning, in my opinion, was unbiased as I was a male Shep romancing Liara and a tried to follow common Alliance protocol. Seeing as Ash had a history of hatred toward aliens I sent Kaidan with the Salarians. Fast forward to the moment where you choose. I have a choice: do I save a biotic officer and a team of STG salarians, or do I save one grunt and risk a diplomatic incident with the salarians. When I found out that Ashley had three sisters it made me pause for a moment, but when I learned that BOTH Ashley and Kaidan would be in Mass Effect 3 Ashley was doomed.

EDIT: Although if you check out my post on the bombard Virmiere from space thread I gave a valid reason why neither of them had to die.

Not to mention we had no idea what Geth could do to our technology.

The only argument I can see to save Ash if the Geth got the AA tower back online. But I don't know how her and the salarians deactivated it (blowing it up or just unplugging it).

This was actually a really difficult decision for me. I picked Kaiden cause he's hot.

1. Saved Ashley for Romance (not knowing you could romance Liara)
2. Barely talked to Kaiden.

sorry for the late response as Im just going back through me 1 and 2 to prepare for me3 I felt compelled to sign up and post my thoughts on this topic.

I personally (not my character in the game) care about Ashley.  They've both had tough lives but Kaiden is a Lieutenant and so he's got the priveleges that go with an officers rank.  He also has the responsibilities thereof as well.  That's why I send him with the Salarians to fight the geth on Vermire... more training in military tactics since hes an officer and all that.  I do go to save him when the first call goes out but when Saren attacks the bomb I go to save not only my love interest but the person I personally as the player care about more.  Yes she has a fixed values system... god scares liberal types I know but "celebrate diversity" in both directions will ya?  Also shes human first not xenophobic.  She works with aliens when she has to but she doesnt trust them... especially since it was her family that surrendered to the Turians during the first contact war 26 years earlier... That tends to put a bad taste in your mouth towards a group if they helped disgrace your entire family for generations.  Add to that the fact that all the other aliens put their needs first and the council expects humans to colonize the dangerous places (like capitain Andersen says the skilian verge and the outer traverse then when we need help you ignore our pleas).  Even the fact that Liara says that everyone sees humanity as sort of a bully doesnt change my opinion because we are among the krogan and the Turians in that respect.  We have been fighting for our survival and our seat on the council since we survived the first contact war and the skilian blitz.  Yet WE are the bullies?  Yeah Human first all the way!

Also if I save Kaiden with the Salarians Saren could get the bomb and kill Ashley too (though Ive never tried to see what happens in that case).  Then add to this the fact that Kaiden is an L2 and has severe migranes (I get those too so I know what a pain they are ... literally) and I feel like if I save him not only am I putting my love, the bomb and the mission at stake Im dooming him to a life of nothing but daily pain.  Since both are alliance they both signed up to give their lives if necessary and a good officer leads from the front.  That's why I choose Ashley every time.  Plus she has a great ass.  <3<3

Irrelevant if you want ass go for Miranda's, and me choosing between the two was based on what a "real" Alliance soldier would have done at the time not who I was romancing.

Caution: Mass Effect 2 (semi) spoilers later in piece.

This was a hard decision for me, allow me to put it long form.

I'm a bit of an RP nut, enough to take on a character in a game and enjoy developing them. My (male) Shepard never really had a thing for Liara, the way she talked and seemed so naive about things was irritating to him. Ash wasn't so bad to talk to, she was more direct yet had a softer side to her personality. Tali was quickly growing on me, finding out more of her life bit by bit. (I had no idea at this stage that Tali wasn't even romancable.)

So, when it came to the choice, who did I save?

Kaiden. And I tell you, they could have made that way worse by putting a timer on that decision, instead of the 10 minutes or so I went and had a ciggie while trying to think.

When it came to leading the teams, I chose Ash with the Salarians and Kaiden for the nuke, thinking he had the better technical knowledge, and she the better leadership/combat knowledge. This is what proved to be my Shepards undoing.

There I was, agonising over a decision of who I should help, with both people telling me to help the other one. Obviously, there was the strong pull toward helping out the potential romantic interest. I had no idea about anything in the game, I had read no spoilers or walkthroughs of any kind - which is how I do RP games the first time through. I had no idea I was about to sentence one of these people to die. I knew it was an important decision, but no idea it was this big.

I sat there and thought about it. Right there, at that point, what was more important? Nuking the facility to stop Saren breeding fake Krogan, or disabling an AA gun that was keeping the Normandy down? In time I chose to go with making sure the nuke went off, as I felt Kaiden would probably need my help more than Ash. And then when Saren turned up at the nuke, I thought for sure I had made the right choice. I found out later he goes where you do.

In the end there was no love interest for my Shepard. She was dead.

(Minimal ME2 spoiler here)
Do I regret the choice? In the end, no. I (like many others) played through the game multiple times, and chose differently. But when it came to carrying on into ME2, this is where I felt I had made the right choice. The scene where you meet Kaiden/Ash on the colony, I couldn't see Ash react that way, follow up email or not. It didn't seem to fit too well for me. But Kaiden? Well, he was always a little unstable because of his early biotics, and it worked better.

pretty easy decision for me, first playthrough and maybe it's a glitch or something but every battle, every god damn firefight kaiden did this kamakaze thing and got killed no, matter what tried i do to stop him setting up attacks and placements etc. interesting to talk to but after that ultimate betrayal against me i benched him, only took a handful of fights but it was enough to hate him, screw him.

I saved Kaiden, because he was the one to see the Reaper first-hand, not Ash. And besides, Kaiden is a higher rank. Grunts are grunts for a reason.

The mission comes first, and my Shep trusted Kaidan to get the job done with the bomb. He's not an LT for nothing. Plus, my Shep reckoned that by going to the AA it may create a diversion and take geth away from the bomb site. My Shep doesn't particularly care for Ash nor romanced her or anyone.
Kaidan was considered to be a good man, and a friend, but that's war for ya.

I did multiple play throughs, and did both. However, I generally felt as follows:-
1) is my current character romantically interested in either? If so, this is a no brainer. Otherwise...
2) if my character is a soldier type, save Kaiden. If not, save Ashley. Basically, two or more pure solders in a party while effective, is boring.
3) If I am something else, save Ashley. I like to play a Sentinel, so having a soldier like Ashley to go on point is good.
4) Kaiden is a more tortured soul, and continually suffers from his L2 implants. I think Ashley is capable of enjoying life more, albeit in her own way. Note: this is not a good reason if consciously used to let someone die. Thin end of the wedge....

I've never saved Ashley. Kaiden has the tech knowledge and gets assigned to the bomb, mission comes first so he gets rescued since the bomb needs guarding as long as possible, just in case Saren tampers with it.

The first time round, when I thought longest and hardest about it, that's what I thought too.  Then just before I decided I thought "It's an RPG, not a sim, so I'll go with emotion not logic!".

heh - first playthrough I tried to stick to what I thought  the character would do, second one I went the other way and was surprised to see what happened, then went back and saved Kaiden again.

Ashley was always my Soldier and I always had her in my party for extra fire support. I had all the techa and biotics covered with the radial wheel, let AI Ash just do her thing. Never had much use for Kaiden :/

Besides, while Kaiden was a sweet character (maybe a little too soft for our line of work) Ash was a poet at heart, something I as a writer personally loved.

So Kaiden got sac'd. Every time :P

Personally,I thought Ashley was a little more useful in combat. She stayed alive longer than Kaiden, and had the firepower to back her up if she got into trouble. Perhaps that a playing issue on my part, but that was a large reason for saving her. Also, she is more interesting than Kaiden. And less of a weenie. The only things I found Kaiden were good for: achivement and the only man in the game to make the helmets look good.

I saved Ash cause she looks hot in Mass Effect 3 even though my femshep romanced Liara. I never used Kaiden cause I'm an adept so I am a  more powerful biotic and I use Tali for my tech and Ash for my combat and I grew to like her.

I saved her out of the most basic instinct of male trying to preserve a female's life.

Lame Man's term. Woman life more precious than male.

Logically however: Kaiden was the higher ranking officer. Kaiden was more useful to the military. Kaiden had more experience.

I say that theoretically it would be better if you save Ashley because she would makeup for her grandfather since she becomes a Spectre in ME3. It would make her family proud, thank her father whom she lost, etc... As for Kaidan, it leaves him in a world of peace without any migraines from L2 implants. He was kind of always a little boring as well. What happens where doesn't matter and if Kaidan is your FemShep romance choice, keep him.

Kaiden at first. Mostly because I disliked Ashley for expediting her family issues into minor xenophobia. But one playthrough(Where I wanted to not have a romance), I talked to Ashley more times than I should have and, through dialog experimentation, ended up making her much more lighthearted and took her xenophobia away.

After that playthrough(Which is my canon male playthrough), I never sacrificed Ash ever again. I romanced her and saw how kind she was when she's not trying to be a tough hardass.
