Sweet Christ on a bicycle, this horsecrap again.I'm always amazed by how many people kill Character X because they hate them. I mean, I get that roleplaying is detached from real life and all, but it hardly seems like a healthy approach for anyone...
Killing off a character in a computer RPG is typically the only way you won't have to see them again at all. Even if you never talk to Kaiden he's right there at the console, across the mess from Sick Bay, just waiting. In this regard, "kill" means "remove from my experience". It's more like not going to a party because someone you can't personally stand is going to be there, or refusing to invite someone you can't stand to your party.
When you combine this with the game telling you "Choose one to die, Shepard" (million points if you've heard that line in a CRPG and can tell me which one) every single time you play to a certain point, it's a pretty logical outcome. You have to get one person out of your party, there's one person in your party you don't like. It's a problem that solves itself.
None of the above should be taken as more relevant than the fact that THEY ARE NOT REAL PEOPLE AND NOTHING YOU DO TO THEM MAKES A TINY LICK OF DIFFERENCE OUTSIDE THE GAME UNIVERSE OR CONSERVATIVE FEARMONGERING ON THE CORRUPTING POWER OF THE VIDYA GAME. It's not even as if this is some kind of Heavy Rain-esque murder simulator and you have to grip and vigorously shake the controller to strangle the character while his digitized visage struggles, gasps, and turns blue in high-def right in front of your eyes, clawing feebly at your hands until his eyes go dim. You push the thumbstick towards the name of the NPC you prefer and you push A.

I'm going to go save Ash, not because I never use Kaiden or don't care for him (despite what jokes I may make), but because it's Ash and the STG. My job there on Virmire (as my Shepard saw it), was to save as many lives as possible. Do I really like having someone die? No.....but that's just me (and I made sure that everyone survived the
Suicide Run in ME 2).
Do I regret choosing Ash over Kaiden? Not really, since I like Jacob more than I do Kaiden and Liara as a biotic has really come a long way since the days of ME 1.

I know, deep roleplay here - I'm usually better than that.
I ultimately settled for Liara (whom I liked better for her personality) so poor Kaidan must be rolling in his grave right now.

First because Garrus and Kaidan had been my squad for the entire game. I tried mixing it up a bit but I just never liked anything as well as those two.
Second because we you have to decide, Kaidan is right there. There is no running off to some unknown area to get anyone. Just grab him and go.
Third because he was my LI. I found that I grew very fond of him over the course of the game- more so than Ash.
It wasn't an easy decision though. I think I literally sat there staring at the screen for a few minutes having no idea what to do. Mainly because I could think of good reasons to save both of them. I really liked Ash as well. Though the best argument I've heard for saving her is if you sent her with the salarians (which I did). For whatever reason, the extra lives saved/lost never even occurred to me during the first play through. My Shep is very much a "save as many people as possible" kind of girl. So, we'll see for next time.

I wonder if that's why their *Shepard* does it, though? How many of our heroes / heroines ended up compromising their military decision-making just because they couldn't follow fraternisation rules? I'd wager quite a lot. Sometimes I think mine was one of them. But it's a complex decision and there are many good arguments for Ash or Kai, or for the tower or the bomb.

On every other character, it depends on the emotional bound and/or the developing friendship. Basically, personal preference for that Shepard.
So my decision is based on the character Shepard embodies.
That's comes out as 5 saved Ash and 4 saved Kaidan.

Can I leave Tali?
When I've kept Ash its been for romance reasons. Otherwise I'd keep Kaidan he's a Lt. His Job is to give orders when I can't, Ashley's is to run into bullets

I save Kaidan, because I think Ashley Williams has a pretty good story arc if she dies on Virmire. She gets to redeem her family name, and posthumously earns medals from - well - every race out there practically, according to the news in ME2. I highly doubt any future Williamses would have any problem advancing in the Systems Alliance military. It seems - for a character that loves poetry - a poetic way to die. Especially if she went down fighting alongside Salarians - so I usually send her with them.
If Kaidan dies on Virmire, if I was reading about his story in a history book - it just doesn't have any punch to it. He's only that guy who died on Virmire when the nuke went off. Maybe human biotics get a better shake, but you could help them out through a sidemission. I just think more needs to happen with Kaidan for him to be interesting.
ManShep or FemShep, Paragon or Renegade - my ME1 Shepard either romances Liara or nobody, so that doesn't come into it.
It's kind of funny because my reasons for sending Kaiden to die on Virmire are kind of the same but kind of the opposite of yours. But mostly because Kaiden simply is "That guy who died on Virmire". He's bland, and he's a weiner lol. If I had the dialog option in ME2 where asked about sending Kaiden to die on Virmire, I'd have selected "Kaiden who?" lol.

I am not sure that my reasoning is good though, because I don't remember if there are any Normandy crew with the person you leave with the bomb.

Also, when my femshep romanced Liara, I had a hard time turning down Kaidan. So I just made him think Shep loved him, then went to Virmire early, and nuked him. That reasoning looks pretty bad now that I've typed it out...

Yes, I have worried about the Geth disabling the bomb too, but on the other hand nukes tend to be unstoppable once the chain-reaction gets going. Also the person at the bomb is practically sitting on the things, so starting the process can't be a problem.

No thanks; I'll leave Kaiden every time. I found him too bland and boring. And I actually used Tali and Garrus in my first playthough (Used Ash and Garrus in my second, then Grunt and Liara in a different playthrough).

The whole point of the mission was to arm the bomb and have its blast take out the entire facility. The STG-led distraction team was just that, a distraction to help the Normandy drop the bomb off at the designated spot. Seeing as how Kaiden has more experience handling tech and Ashley has more experience working with troops at the frontline, it only makes sense to put Kaiden in charge of the bomb. Even after he starts up the detonation sequence there was no telling whether there would be a malfunction, not to mention that Kaiden was working with far less reinforcements than Ashley. I just played through this part as a male Shepard and even though I still find the choice to be hard---especially since I romanced Ashley---it made more sense to save Kaiden in the end. If anything went wrong with his part of the mission, it all would have been a waste.
