It has been a very, very long time since my first play through of Mass Effect, but I think I killed Ashley due to having romanced the shiiiittt out of Liara. Yeah she got double burned. But really I have as many playthroughs with either or.

Ashley is an alright character, but I like Kaidan more. Just seems like a dude Paragon Shepard would totally have a beer with. Ashley seems like that **** you knocked up who used to be hot but isn't now and can't even cook but you're stuck with her anyway. Hah, yep.

I chose Ashley. I chose her because when I first played Mass Effect 1 I had no idea you could romance until the crewdeck part with Ashley. The only reason I saved her is because she could use every gun and Kaiden could only use the pistol, and I had this joke about him hardly passing military school.

I like the number of people saying "X was mean to me on Horizon in ME2, so from now on I always kill them on Virmire" when Ashley and Kaidan have exactly the same dialogue on Horizon.

It's odd that people would think a soldier is more effective than a biotic/tech specialist. This is Mass Effect, not COD.

Even though Kaiden was great in ME3, next time I play the first it'll probably be Ashley.

This. Also you do get an a fairly conciliatory email, again more or less identical from both characters, later on. There are better reasons for killing them on Virmire than something they don't do till the second game and then apologise for.

Some playthroughs its simply to advance my relationship on one with Ashley, although I have never kept it going past two to date... I hate the tounge-lashing I recieve on Horizon, to me if she "loved me" she'd respect my choice and believe me... and besides I hate how Ashley changes to Miranda Jr in three.

Kaidan is a victim of the same feeling I have about Jacob... Good guy, but kinda just there...... Kaidan makes things weird because all of a sudden he's Bi in three and I have no interest in a relationship with a male character.

Personally I hate kaiden.
On each playthrough I can't wait to get to the vimire mission just so I can kill him.

I don't know.

You have to realize that for her...it's been two years since you "died".

Then you show up working for Cerberus...

It would be odd if she acted any other way in my opinion.

Also...this whole "Miranda Jr" makes no sense.

So what...she finally lets her hair down...and that makes her just like Miranda?

Miranda may have "dat ass"...but Ashley is in a class by herself with those lips.

Kaiden is a cripled l2 biotic, doomed to live with headaches and have problems.
A. Wiliams is a fertile human female with decent military skill - higher fertility value, less chances for anything onforseen, since she has binary level of intelligence with 1 being "Sir, yes sir!" and 0 being "Awaiting orders!", and any poetry is so fun to bust with "you're out of line" phrases )

Have always saved Kaidan myself....personal preference in personality.... but wanted one Ash surviving run through for ME3....Unfortunately on my attempt to have Ash as my survivor I didn't realize Shep needs to be a jerk towards Ash period if he doesn't romance Liara to prevent the relationship flag with Ash.... I ran a game stopping at one dialog with Ash (her reservations about having Aliens onboard) didn't renegade response her, just never spoke with her again....but to my horror the game flagged her as Sheps beloved....:-( ...and so no Ash Survivor for ME3 for me, I am very disappointed.

I personally like them both fairly equally, and none of my Shepards have made that choice very easily. However, I always go back for the one defending the bomb. I don't see much of a reason to go to the anti-air tower or whatever. In fact, I don't even know what that area looks like. You see a Geth ship fly to and land at the bomb site. So I think, realistically, if you don't go back there then the Geth and/or Saren will stop the bomb somehow and kill anyone trying to defend it. Before the mission, Kirrahe says something along the lines of "once the nuke is armed there is little that can be done to stop it." I'm thinking if anyone can disarm it, the Geth could, and perhaps Saren himself as well. Hell, they might quickly load it onto the Geth ship and fly it as far as they can get it if they somehow can't disable it.

I've got three Sheps - my 2 femsheps saved Kaidan because he was their romance (one each at bomb site vs. anti-air). The third (a male shep) will save Kaidan also (if I can make it that far, Meers is hard for me in the first game) even though he's started a romance with Ashley. It's part of this whole broken psych thing I have in mind for him. By the time this poor guy gets to ME3 he's going to be pretty messed up, even by this trilogy's standards.

Eventually I'll have a save game that involves Ash living, but barring another romance, none of my characters have had it make sense yet.

I always save Kaidan, he's been there from the very first scene, Ashley was just a replacement for Jenkins. Plus she ran and left her squad to die, my Shepards have little respect for her because of that. He's also my female Sheps first LI, but my guy Shep will kill her off just as quick.

I saved Ash because she was my love interest. I had never really used Kaiden and didn't really feel bad for him dying (though I did struggle with letting him die) until later in the games mostly ME3. I actually really enjoy Ashley's character. I think the whole "alien racist" is really blown out of proportion by some fans. Not to mention the whole, Her and Shepard getting together in mass effect 1 (with the love triangle with Liara of course), Shepard's death and the falling out in mass effect 2, and the reunion in mass effect three her fear of losing Shepard, and his death at the end mass effect 3 effectively forcing her to live with his death a second time. it just was a powerful story.

As a not so quick disclaimer, I like both characters as they are both deep, realistic and flawed in their own ways. I have no respect for the people who falsely and shallowly claim that Ash is a racist zealot (Take the time to actually read the codex and listen to the npcs and you'd find that she is largely correct in her opinion of how the various aliens view humanity. Her spirituality is brought up one time, last time I checked, the Alliance allows people to worship or not as they choose. Or do you also want to kill a certain blue skinned squadmate for mentioning her Diety and spirtual beliefs?) or that Kaidan is a whiny empty suit (Just because he is reserved and soft spoken doesn't mean he doesn't have feelings.) who happens to share a voice with another character who apparently isn't well liked.

With that said, I have three "canon" Shepards, and thier decisions have been... (All three sent Ash with the diversion squads so Kaidan could prepare the nuke.)

Rebecca Shepard (Spacer/Sole Survivor Engineer --Assault Rifles)

She saved Kaidan and in her report she justified her decision as making sure that the bombsite wasn't overrun because Saren could not be allowed to retake the facility and its dangerous research. However, in her heart of hearts she knows that despite making what she honestly sees as the correct command decision, her feelings for Kaidan played a part in her choice and that it was a failing on her part. She will always carry that extra guilt over Ash's death.

David Shepard (Colonist/Ruthless Soldier --Electronics)

He saved Ash and never really thought twice about his choice, Kaidan was his friend and a fine officer, but Ash was dear to his heart and more importantly he could not risk the AA Tower being brought back online, the mission has to come first and one life can never be allowed to outweigh the lives of an entire squad.

Danielle Shepard (Earthborn/War Hero Adept --Electronics)

The decision of who to save tore a hole in Danielle's heart; she is honest enough with herself to admit that between their shared biotic experiences and Kaidan's quiet strength she felt far more for him then Alliance Regs would ever allow and she knew that he shared her feelings. However, in the end she had to make what she knew was the best of bad choices, and she pushed on to the AA Tower to pickup Ash and make sure that the Normandy couldn't be shot out of the sky, she honestly believes that her choice was the correct command decision and takes what little solice that she can in the fact that she didn't allow her personal feelings to either cheapen Kaidan's heroism or taint her command decisions. In her most introspective of moments, she has wondered if her relationship with Liara would have ever blossomed had Kaidan lived.

Ash has been my go-to choice on all three of my serious characters. Nothing romantic or story-driven about it, I just don't like Kaiden. He is too whiny and gossipy for my tastes. Every conversation I have with him seems to come off whiny and any time I interact with him in the world, his comments are never helpful. I'll take the slightly human-centered, arrogant chick over whiny and gossipy every time.

That said, I didn't exactly lose sleep about Ash skipping out on during ME2. I got enough problems without my own crew not trusting me and questioning every decision because my ship has a white/black paint job.

Kaiden's a tool. Ashley's a xenophobic cow. If I could, I would let them both die, but since I couldn't.....Ashley. The Normanday's a ship with alien crew, I didn't need her attitude.

I always save Kaidan because he's almost always my MaleShep's LI. I don't care if they can't be together in ME1 & ME2, there is enough undertones for me to see the hidden love :).  Ash was a cool person but My Shep will never save her. I also find Kaidan more useful and typically use him more in my squad. I also feel like Ash dying there was more fitting for her character than Kaidan's. She gets to redeem her family name that way. I also think it makes more sense to have Kaidan deal with the bomb than Ash as she even mentions that he is needed there and it makes sense for Shep to go back to defend it.

I recently did a playthrough where I sent Kaidan with the Salarians because I wanted his rush to save him be a bit more dramatic. Of course Saren shows up saying he can't let Shep ruin the place blah blah. My first thought was "Then why are you at the AA towers and not defusing the bomb that is going to bring down the place you feel is protecting you." lol! So yeah I think having Kaidan deal with the bomb then saving him and preventing Saren from defusing it makes more sense to me.

Sorry, I like Ashley far more than Kaiden. Ash has personality, grit, and is a thousand times more useful than Kaiden. With me, Alenko always goes up with the mushroom cloud. Adios muchacho.

I almost always saved Ashley becuase I like hearing her talk about her family. That legacy that was following her around too, tied into a larger part of the galatic history. Its weird because I never did understand why she joined the crew after Eden Prime, but I enjoyed having her around. Also it was interesting having a soldier character who felt out of place. What I mean is she did not seem to feel like she fit in. She was a grunt doing her duty, & suddenly she's with some of the Alliance's  best & a Spectre.
I liked that she was abit xenophobic, just becuase it was an interesting element to have there. Humanity are newcomers. It made it much more realistic seeing that not everyone was quite on board with the whole galatic community. Don't think it matters too much who you save outside of ME1, I never felt like you get to see them again after the first game. Yeah they are there, kinda, but they don't feel like the same characters to me.
