Have you ever kept Ashley alive and brought her with you on your final visit to the Citadel when you talk to the Terra Firma guy? If you think she's a racist my guess is that you haven't. People who've pegged her as a racist may be surprised when she has a go at the Terra Firma bloke for being a bunch of racists who don't know what they're talking about and are just looking for reasons to fight with aliens. She's a long way from being my favourite character in the game (as is Kaiden - I often say I'd leave them both on Virmire if I could) but she isn't really a racist and even xenophobe may be an exaggeration.PR_ wrote...
I am in my third playtrough, i'm thinking of saving Kaidan, but, he is so boring and empty, Ashely is nice, useful but she is racist and xenophobic, but she is more interesting than Kaidan.

The second play through I really hated that decision and left it on pause while I went about doing chores for a few hours lol - pondering my choice. I don't even know why it's so hard considering I neither hate nor love both characters, I probably would never have finished the series if it was a Liara vs Garrus choice. But anyway, I got my son (who was 4 at the time) to move the mouse around and click on things for both my second and third runs (saved Kaidan in second and Ashley in third). Now that my son can read and report back using that method doesn't quite work so well anymore so I just download other peoples saves

I am in full agreement with you. Plus, if you talk to Ashley after Noveria, she will tell you to speak to Liara because she may be hurting from her mother's demise. If she was racist why would she care about Liara's feelings? Think about it. She is cautious, not racist, toward aliens.

Then from a story standpoint I always send her with the Salarian team because she is the better soldier and Kaidan with the bomb because he is more into tech. When I leave to help Ash and the Salarians, going back always seems counterproductive to me (questioning the own decision, being indecisive) and more risky in the sense that I could lose both and Kaidan might have to pull the trigger on the bomb before I get back - so everyone could die. That's why I always go on and try to save Ash before Kaidan has to initiate the detonation.

Also LOL racism being brought up. These are creatures of another species it isnt racism. There is no reason to trust them at all and although they may be individuals their race is a threat to humanitys freedom and soverignty (no pun intended). Being catious and skeptical of aliens who have tons of wars with each other and genocide each other (rachni, krogans, protheans, geth) is VERY intelligent and the people who apply the word "racism" are PC idiots. This is war and empires not workplace equality trash.
Hell I don't even trust fellow man that much, in fact I don't trust them at all.
Soft headed soft hearted fools...

While Liara is very feminine, Ashley seems more of a tom boy as i just can't think of a better way to describe her. It just made her different from Liara.

Eventually, I got sick of pretending to care about the squad member who DID die, so I went back, played ME1 again, and killed Ash instead.
Then, once I got back to ME3, I actually cared about the squad member I lost, and went back to ignoring Kaidan. Y'know, for old time's sake.

Yep. I don't particularly like her but a racist she is not, as demonstrated by her calling out the Earth First crowd as racists in at least two conversations I can think of. In my earliest playthroughs I'd have agreed more with the claim that she's not much use, but that applied to Kaiden too as I was playing Soldiers almost exclusively and in ME1 a Soldier Shepard can really get on fine with Tali and Liara just about everywhere. Wasn't until I'd began playing Adepts and Engineers that I started getting more out of Ashley, and Kaiden to a lesser extent.Lathrim wrote...
People who think Ashley is racist need to pay more attention and stop overreacting, methinks.

Ashley was not ready to go on a ¨solo¨ mission anyways since she didn´t seemn to cope to well with the fate of her squad on Eden Prime, I didn´t want her panicking. I think this makes a lot of sense in all situations.
As for who I saved? My 1st time I saved Ash because I couldn´t risk the bomb not going off. Although I can see good reasons for going to the AA tower(We don´t want that reactivated, the bomb was rigged to explode anyways, to save as many people as possible)
Skill wise The Salarians are meant to draw attention anyways so as far as whose abilities would help more in that I would think a Tech and Biotic would be more useful.
Resource wise I do think Kaidan is more valuable for the Alliance than Ashley. The game goes out of its way to remind you that Ashley is a good soldier but she keeps second guessing his superiors all the time...

I also sent him with the Salarians, so saving him also saves them. I like each character about the same though.
In the end though, it was because he was in the game earlier that Ashley.

It seemed to me that Kaidan was prepared for his death and his statement that he "had no regrets" were appropriate for him. While I considered that both characters were prepared to die on the mission, it seemed that if the "time" of one of the two had to be up then it would be Kaidan's before Ashley's. For Ashley to die on Virmire would be too soon. Her death needed to be averted more than Kaidan's. I did not want Kaidan to die, but it appeared to me that his death on Virmire was easier to accept than Ashley's.
Also, if Ashley died then it would undo the romance link up between Shepard with Ashley, which I did not want to end. Although I consider this a "meta-game" consideration, which was separate from the "in-game" Shepard's considerations.

Being able to have 2.5 Kaidan-free games is the greatest thing about the Mass Effect series, IMHO.
Have a very nice day.

Ashley seemed like a much more interesting character than Kaiden, It was disappointing to see ME3 Ashley vs ME1 Ashley, they really dumbed her down.

However, if I'm doing a full trilogy & serious playthrough then my final choice is Kaidan. Ashley is annoying as f***. I honestly can't stand listening to her. A combination of her ugliness, religious beliefs, and poetic jestures is what lost my appeal to the character. Finally, there's this issue I have where she is getting along with her family quite well? People think Kaidan is boring!?! Well then those people don't know the very definition of boring to watch a character with no personal family issues, that has a regular life like everyone else! Anyway, I've gone into this long enough.
I respect Kaidan for not being biased, and I respect him even more for being restrained as well as he is (with the exception of ME2).He's a good person too. There's really not much to hate about that. Only those that give him a chance will truely understand.

Ashley is hot and Kaidan is a tool lol and Ashley is even hotter in Mass Effect 3. I'm programmed to preserve the hot chicks and let the goofy toolboxes perish on Virmire lol
