Adept Shepard + Liara + Kaidan makes the final battle in ME1 a breeze btw, even on insanity. Ashley is pretty much useless in that battle.

Lets be fair, that combination makes any battle a breeze. It's not even funny, because the poor bad guys can't even get their bearings before they are all floating like so many clay pigeons.

And apart from what you've said, I've all too often found that certain squadmates(I've only noticed this on Liara, but others may do it as well) don't use weapons they are proficient with. And while it's kinda endearing to watch Liara running around, shooting things with sniper rifle she shouldn't even know how to use, it's also just a little facepalm worthy. From this perspective, I can see why Ashley would be more desired squadmate, since she's the only one proficient with all weapon types, but when you compare that to ability to lock down half the battlefield in matter of seconds, Liara still comes out ahead by a landslide.

That combination is so ridiculously powerful that I've never even used it. Closest I came to a setup like that Adept Shep + Kaidan + Wrex, and that pretty much roflstomped over everything as well.

That about equping weapons they aren't proficient with I am aware of. I notice this immediatly though, especially on squadmates that have a weapon power. I tend to pause the game to use powers, not quick keys, so my eyes gaze over the weapons regardless.

I saved Kaiden as i really did not like Ashely, also as i was about to save Ashely, something just hit me that made me like Kaiden a lot. He is that guy who been threw a lot of problem, even standing up for his friends when he knew he would get hurt. Sure he might seem like an Whinner but thats because he doesn't really want to make so you need to fell his pain. In ME3 he really is good and really feel like that friend that you would rather call brother. I never used either Kaiden or Ashely in ME1 as i wanted to try out the game with only Tali(who i felt would be an epic story if i had her in my squad and then romance her in ME2) and Garrus because, well it's freaking Garrus. Also Kaiden is so nice to you in ME3, or well he is nice but he becomes super nice after the Priority: Citadel and doesn't seem to have any problem with any of the other races in ME1, when Ashely, well she might not be an racist but she does an poor job not making me disagree with her. She just felt to Renegade for my Paragon Shepard while Kaiden felt very Paragon.

Should maybe also mention that i did save Kaiden on my last save because i sent him with Kirrahe and forgot that i wanted to see what would happen if i saved them so i saved Kaiden but had already started to like him more and after the mission he was such an nice character... Until Horizan, but that for his acceptable reasons.

Aside from her usefulness in my setup.

I am sympathetic to Ashley's career stigma, her realpolitik/strong humanity opinion, and her religious views.

Plus it's Kimberly Brooks, how can I say no?

The same way I say yes to setting up Kaidan the bomb.

With a large grin and an emphatic yes.

Ashley can prime just as well. Disruptor Ammo can prime for a tech burst, her grenade can prime for an eh.. fire combo, or w/e it's called.

And on what difficulty did you play ME1? I can't imagine doing insanity without using the power wheel. Plus, floating enemies can't shoot you, and Shepard is always the main damage dealer, your squadmember can´t aim for ****. Countless times your squadmates are just shooting a wall or crate. Liara + Kaidan, or Wrex + Kaidan is far more deadly than Liara + Ashley or Wrex + Ashley, irrelevant of Shepard´s class. And why you´d spec Ashley to wield any weapon but an assalt rifle is beyond me. Her having access to all weapons is irrelevant, because the assault rifle trumps all.

Adept Shepard + Liara + Kaidan makes the final battle in ME1 a breeze btw, even on insanity. Ashley is pretty much useless in that battle.

I've beaten ME1 on all the difficulty levels. I play on Casual most of the time (don't play it for the combat) but I have beaten ME1 on Veteran, Hardcore, and Insanity.

For the playthrough w/o powers it was Casual. You're right. Insanity with no talents in ME1 would be, well, insane.

Anyway, fair points, all. I'm not big into ammo powers or grenades so that's why I disregarded those.

I was uncomfortable with kaiden. Had this vibe that he was coming onto me.

Kinda regreted that since ashley never did synergies with my team composition.

I have never had a preference of one or the other as far as ME 1 is concerned.  I don't know if ME 2/ME3 spoilers are allowed in this forum so I will just say I find Kaidan more tolerable later in the series.

I like them both, so, on the PC I keep them both.  On the consoles (or non hacked PC save), I always chose Kaidan, even with Bro!Shep.

I tend to 'tinker' with character abilities in RPGs. Kaidan's so odd with his mixed tech & biotic abilities-- I  keep him just to come up with another way to set him up for ME3. So far, my fave is making him a walking Reave-Bomb. Jerk takes hits better than my guy.

I like Ash, but she doesn't serve my gaming style.

First time, I saved Ashley but she just seemed to get progressively more annoying throughout the series, imo, and she started out as xenophobic and annoying, anyways. She seems a bit set in her ways at the very least. As a side note, I'm a little religious myself, but I dislike the "never an atheist in a foxhole" dialogue they give you if you choose "I do, too". Now I always just choose "Are you a fanatic?", it just fits better, for me.

Now, Kaidan's my bro in Mass Effect 3. He seems like this chill dude: drinking brewskis, hanging out, and trying to do his duty as a soldier. He's not a bad character, imo. Also, he's Canadian, like me :) I think, the only thing I really disliked about him was that slow-mo conversation initiation sequence that played every time you talked to him in Mass Effect 1.

Only time I save Ashley is if she is my LI. ME1 it doesn't really matter. ME2 & ME3, Kaiden just meshes better with the storyline. Especially true for ME3. And I can never shake the feeling that Ash has a death wish wanting to die in the line of duty. Not someone you want guarding your back.

I like Ash when she talks about her family and poetry. But Kaidan just seemed so much more sincere and levelheaded, where as Ash's slight xenophobia is really hard to shrug off (might as well be a little racist too).

Even though Kaidan was my LI, I was a little on the fence about who I wanted to kill, until Ash smack-talked Liara in the board room in front of everyone for absolutely no good reason . That did it for me.

First time I saved Kaiden because he was my romance option.

I loved his character. A guy in video games that was willing to show that he was vulnerable, sensitive, yet at the same time able to kick ass when needed.

I saved Kaiden on my first playthrough. Kaidan has tech skill, so I thought he should go with the bomb. And making sure the bomb goes off was a priority (I thought Saren might disarm it). I guess I overanalyzed the scene :)

I like Kaiden more than Ashley, I like Kaiden's biotics more than Ashley's gun skills, and I like how Ashley's story ends up if she dies on Virmire protecting the Salarians.

Win. Win. Win.

I save Kaidan, as he just seems more relaxed, opened minded, has gone through alot of physical problems due to his biotic abilities and is vieved  as 2nd class citizen in most humans eyes. He's also higher up on the chain of command than Ashely.

Ashely is a racist religious ******, who seems to question your every order. I like that she's not afraid to be headstrong, but they way she so prohuman irritates me and seems to contradict her ideology when it's placed on an alien.

I try to play the game, as if I was really commander Shepard, and it was really me in that situation. So, logically, I chose to sacrifice Ashley. Ashley is a fine soldier, but she is just a soldier, Kaiden is a co-pilot and a powerful biotic; both which will be more useful against the reapers, and if something was to happen to Joker...I would need someone to fly the Normandy well enough in hot situations. But, my Shepard does not take this decision lightly, and does feel bad..but it had to be done.

Bomb was most important > Save Ashley.

I'm old fashioned and soft hearted > Save the female.

So I always save Ash.

Yes, this implies I typically play a male Shepard.

I like Ashley. Well. I like the way she says "Commander" after every interaction. I had high hopes of romancing her with my FemShep. Kaiden is just watered down to me on many levels.  I think he's pretty dull, and his abilities on the team aren't needed when Ashley is a combat specialist, Liara has her biotics, and Tali for tech, obviously. I hardly ever took Garrus and Wrex either, even though I love them both. I took the squad mates with 100% abilities instead of the 50/50s.

With Ashley going on and on about Cerberus well into the third game, I sometimes wish I had the slap-a-betch option or could have left them both on Virmire. Enough already.

saving Kaidan because I ain't remotely interested in Ashley. I also hate how she's practically a forced romance. going against the flow is my raison d'etre. plus his face model is a babe :) so playing with maleShep it's like the cultivation of a 3-year patience game.

My honest choice is Liara, blowing her up on Virmire with the bomb would save a lot of trouble

Ashley dying makes more sense: Kaidan's an officer, she's infantry.

She also does more dead than she does alive. The stigma regarding her name is pardoned, she's seen as a bridge between species, and the salarians and turians honor her. Kaidan just gets a scholarship.

Plus, I can't headcanon Kaidan/Miranda with Kasumi watching the whole time without it.

Kaidan is more of a tech guy, he goes with the bomb.  Ashley goes to shoot things.

I go back for Kaidan, because the bomb is priority, and it just makes more sense that way.
