Honest reason? I liked Ashley more. I like to talk to Ash about her family it's something that seems real.

My primary reason is i get more emotion out of Ash. I've saved Kaiden before but i can't really remember what he said. I struggle to remember much of anything he said which should give you an idea of how much of an impression he made on me. Ash I can remember better and for the most part I liked her. In terms of game mechanics I play a sentinel and have little use for another one in the group. Ash's fire power is useful though I typically just use Wrex and Garrus. Well that or Tali and Liara.

I also feel Ash has more reverence for Shepard especially when she refers to her as a god returned from the dead. Plus Kaiden was the default survivor in ME2 if you didn't import and I hated all the default choices. They were effectively pure renegade. It kind of makes me see him as the renegade choice.

It's also nice to be given a chance to show that my Shepard believes in a higher power. Maybe during their off time they talked faith.

Imade my choices based on who I wanted to romance in the following games. It adds an underlying feel of sadness when ME3 rolls around and Ashley petulantly whines about Shepards betrayal meanwhile she's still accusing him of being Cerberus even after the coup

I just want to add, I love Kaiden's armor and abilities more in Me3.  So that influences my playthroughs in Me1.  Weird, I posted a comment in 2010 on this thread on the first page.  I have a updated opinion on Kaiden and Ashley since Me3 came out.

My first playthrough I saved Ashley even though I was romancing Kaidan. I was on my way to the AA tower to rescue her, I wasn't going to backtrack "sorry Ash I like Kaidan better, and I trusted Kaidan to make sure the nuke went off". So Kaidan ended up dying.

It was all pretty sad.

I most of the time saved Ashley, since I find her much more interesting as character 8and being her my LI most of the times) .... just a pity Bioware gave up on her (story wise I mean) on ME2 and ME3 and ruined a character that, notwithstanding this, I still love

I usually save Kaidan because he is tech and biotic; Ashley possess neither. Plus Kaidan does not complain about everything. Sometimes I will save Ashley, though. I like how she believes in God, and she is kind of hot. Kaidan is the same guy who would always save my player on Knights of the old Republic and Republic Commando. I feel like I owe him for those times.

Because Kaidan can be such a random dude, and he has a better class setup than Ashley in ME3  :)

I dislike both of them but I choose Kaiden because even though he is boring he isn't a ****** like Ashley

Kaidan was with the bomb. The guy that was with the bomb when **** goes down always dies blowing it up. That's a rule I dare not defy.

Honestly, I choose the VS based on whether I'm playing as manShep or FemShep. As FemShep, I mostly choose Kaidan because I feel we had a closer friendship than I had with Ash (even though Ash is more interesting IMO). My male Shep just can't bring himself to leave a woman to die, so he rescues Ashley (it may be sexist, but I like to think of him as a chivalrous man). I have done the opposite as a renegade, but 80% of the time I tend to lean more towards paragon.

First, the animations for Saren holding Shepard up in the air are much better suited for the tower environment, since he can basically throw you down from that tower. Thus, I always go to the tower.

Now, for tech-savvy characters (Engineer, Infiltrator, Sentinel) I always choose Kaidan to go with the salarians, because 1) he is more willing to work with other species 2) he volunteered. Being knowledgeable in tech, my characters can prepare the bomb themselves.

For non-tech characters (Soldier, Vanguard, Adept) I always choose Kaidan to stay with the bomb, because my characters don't know how prepare the bomb. Thus, Ashley gets saved :)

I never liked Ashley too much. So most of the time I let her die no matter if I play as male or female Shep. Saved her once though, just cause I was curious. I remember regreting that later in me3. For some reason I was finding her really annoying.

Kaidan is hot and gay so I save him during MShep playthroughs. During Femshep playthroughs I save Ashley.

I actually like both characters. Kaidan is not anywhere near the level of self righteousness of any of the other designated male LIs of Bioware past (Alistair, CARTH, Anders) but people act like he is the most annoying/boring character they've ever seen. I love Kaidan as a character because he is written very well, particularly in his romance arc.

Ashley is very over the top and I find her hilarious but some people are put off by her I guess. I have a high tolerance when it comes to loud and annoying characters so she never really bothered me.  Also it needs to be noted that pretty much all of the ME1 squadmates are pretty monotone and not over the top with the exception of Ashley so she tends to rub people the wrong way.

Depends on which one I'm romancing. Used to be that if I was romancing Liara, Ash would live. But I find Kaidan to be a much more interesting character than Ash in ME3. Sorry Ash, maybe it's not your fault. If I'm going to complain to Bioware about something, it'll be for the butchering of your character. But really, I'm not bitter  :D  .... I don't romance her that often, so it's no big deal. Kaidan's got some depth in ME3, though. I liked that he was trying to find his biotic students and stuff, and that -- in the citadel DLC meet-up, at least -- he's jealous of James, heh. I found femshep-romanced Kaidan to be a little creepy, though... it's not something I'll do again. Once was enough.

Kaidan. Why? Math.

Kaidan is the only sensible choice to leave with the bomb. He's a tech. Ash is not. Ashley is much better suited to be with the Salarian forces. When the time comes to make a choice, I can either save one guy, or the entire group with Ashley.

He's died every time. Even the playthrough I intended to romance him. I do pay the price for this because I can't unlock his ability in the third game.

My wife did let him live for romance reasons on her first playthrough and spent the next two games regretting it. She straps him to the bomb every time now for being an idiot.

That said, I think Kaidan really shines at the Citadel party, and I'm glad I got to see that over my wife's shoulder at least.

(edit: geez just noticed this thread was from 2010. I probably posted somewhere else on it.)

I save Kaiden. Why? Logic.

First, Kaiden is an Officer, Ash is not. Second, Kaiden is a biotic, which makes him a more valuable asset to the Alliance. Third, I send him to fight with the salarians because he's not as... xenophobic(?) as Ash, and that leaves Ash to make her last stand at the bomb. She already kind of had a deathwish, might as well let her go down fighting.

Meta reasons?

Ash dying in the first game means she avoids the character assassination that happens in the third (and that god awful psuedo-Miranda makeover). I like Kaiden more. Kaiden actually does something with his life, heading up Biotics Division and I can actually see him earning a few promotions, given he's intelligent (tech expert) as well as a human biotic. Ashley does... stuff, I guess? Kaiden's appointment to Spectre at least makes some sense, given his talents (even if he still isn't probably the best candidate, as it's clearly a political ploy by Udina). Ashley's ascension through even more ranks because reasons I guess is just too much for me to swallow, though. She appears to do less than Kaiden but still gets an Officer Commission and promoted up half the officer's chain of command despite the fact she should be blacklisted.

Just give me Kaiden. We can go hang out and do Marine buddy stuff. Ash might smear her make-up (seriously, she wears less than Miranda).

Usually, I save whomever I am romancing at the time. However, it always pains me when I choose Ash over Kaidan. (Definite fictional obsession with Kaidan.)

I personally like both of them, but Ashley ends up totally annoying the crap out of me by ME3. Especially when she freaks out more if you cheated on her in ME2. At least Kaidan basically understands. Ashley acts as if she never saw that coming, especially after the events at Horizon.

The tone of her voice when she bitches at Shep is unbearable. I'd totally rather deal with Kaidan's whining. At least it's kind of cute.

This time i am doing a male Shep in which I am going to choose to let Ashley die instead of Kaidan, even though I plan on romancing her. After about 3 other male Shep playthroughs I have done, I can't save her anymore. x_x;

I was raised in a military family/household, so I just applied military logic to the situation.

Before I get into the actual situation, being in command of an operation like that, I'm not going to send my sergeant-esque grunt to make sure this complicated, jury-rigged nuke is armed correctly. That would go to the lieutenant who's occupation (sentinel) happens to be much more tech-oriented. Vice versa, I'm not sending my tech expert LT to a diversion fire team. So Kaiden goes with the bomb, Ashley the fireteam. Both play to their strengths. As for the situation itself...

One of the hardest tenents of the Soldier's Creed is that "I will always place the mission first." And it applies here.

When the mission unfolds, we have "Geth pouring out over the bomb site!!!"  the way I see it, (military logic) would tell me that my jury-rigged nuke, tech specialist, and entire objective for being here are under attack by Saren's forces, all of whom are AI's, and who are very advanced in hacking and electronics. I know he says he's going to make sure it goes off no matter what, but as a mission commander, I can't take that chance. What if it goes off too early, and kills us all? (it IS a nuke) what if the Geth get a lucky shot and kill him or detonate bomb before he can set a timer? What if they defuse or find a way to disarm it?

I can't gamble with the fate of so crucial an operation. I also can't gamble with the lives of my (and Kirahee's) teams, the council races, (if the Krogan join Saren,) nor can I afford to die here, I have other objectives elsewhere in the galaxy. I can't just go rescue her and hope things go well at the bomb site, even if I did love Ashley. I didn't leave her behind because I think she's some xenophobe, or I don't like her personality. I left her behind because unfortunately, the operation demanded it, and the mission always comes first.

Too bad going for the bomb has a scene that doesn't make sense. How do the salarians end up on your ship?

This is why I save who's not with the bomb. Which in my last few runs has always been Ashley, for reasons stated by Darius.

I send Kaidan to the tower if I'm playing a tech-oriented character. Such a character can prepare the bomb himself and let Ashley to guard it. Kaidan is more willing to work with the other species and he volunteers :)

Not only the salarians appear on the Normandy, but also Saren's animation of holding Shepard in the air is more dramatic on the tower :)

Who does Kirrahe pick when you let him decide who to take?

Is it random?
