If I had the choice I would have left both on Virmire but Kaiden got left 99.9% of the time because I didn't like the character.  I also didn't find him that useful in battle and to top it off he always seemed to interfere my budding relationship with Liara. However now that I have played ME3 a few times I have changed my stance on who dies in ME1 to Ash.  For how much I dislike Kaiden in ME1, Ash is so much worse in the brief part in ME2 and all of ME3.

My reasons were shallow.

1. My first Shep was romancing Ashley.

2. I thought Kaidan was boring.

Ash goes with Salarians. I take her word for it that Kaidan is needed for the bomb. So I save Kaidan (+ bomb). He is also femShep's man (even tho', yes, he is so bland it hurts) but still.

Also by ME3 Ash has better hair than my femShep and this cannot be tolerated. :D

I usually save Kaidan because, with Liara, it's really easy to beat Saren/Sovereign construct using lift.

I usually always save Ashley because I'm either romancing her or she's just something to look at, especially in ME 3 lol It depends on my class sometimes too.

The first time, I saved Ashley because I was teenage boy and I wanted to romance her.  'Nuff said.  On later playthroughs, I always saved Kaidan because I could relate to him.  So many call him bland, boring, or unremarkable, but he was a character who had already had his share of excitement and had moved on from it.  It's something that I can appreciate even more now that I am older.

Honestly, because I was romancing Ash. I unfortunately broke the bro code that one time, but it was for a good reason  :)

I have a hard time deciding. I prefer an extra soldier squadmate, but I can not stand Ashley as a person. I usually only save her if I'm making a mean, roguish, slightly xenophobic, Shepherd character.

I saved both through different playthroughs. However If I had to choose I would save Kaiden. I love his character and want him by my side in ME3.

Ash's sacrifice will also clear her family name. It's what she wanted.

So have I as I think both aer great characters in the series. If I found myself in Shepards shoes and had to pick one I'd probably go with Ash as I do find her kind of cute. Although for the playthrough I'm doing right I'm planning on keeping Kaidan and sacrificing Ashley as I'm playing as a soldier and am planning on a Tali romance through 2 and 3 when I get there

I played the mage, and used Ashley for tank and Tali for the damage and skills.  I wanted to keep my party simple - I didn't even bother to pick up Wrex (ugly mug ruled him out) and I think I picked Liara up last thing before setting out after Sovereign, so I didn't get to know her much.

Bottom line - Ashley hot, Kaiden not.

Sucks I must have screwed up the romance somewhere along the way. When I'm done with the trilogy I'll have to check a walkthrough for my second playthrough. I'm sure I missed a bunch of stuff along the way.

My Shepard wanted to get laid.

Logic, pragmatism, and common sense be damned.

He regrets it later.

My reason: I could relate way more to Kaidan (he's probably just as boring and bland as I am ;)), he was a great bro to my Shep, and I couldn't stand Ashley and her views on alien races, so she had to go. I regret nothing and will never do it any differently.

I sort of just hated Ashley... I took every chance I could to yell at her, so when they chance came to leave her behind for good, I jumped on it.

I save the one who with with the salarians as I figure it has a higher chance of saving more lives since, in theory, you also save the salarain team.

Kaidan is always the one sent with the salarains because Ashley is a racist that refers to alien lives as being the same as dogs. I figured the salarians deserved someone leading them that doesn't think of them like dogs. So Kaidan goes with them and I save Kaidan to potentially save  the most lives.

In short: Ashley dies because her racist attitude. I rather like the karma of it all. Nice to see racism come back to bite someone in the ass.

I started with MaleShep on my first play through and was romancing Ash but I then switched to FemShep for the Voice acting before finishing. I ended up letting Ashley Die because  I sent her with the Bomb. And the Solarians said the bomb was tamer proof, so saving one soldier at the bomb that didn't need to be guarded vs. saving a whole unit of soldiers, it was no contest. Had I been romancing Ash at this point (ie if it was available to Fem shep, I would have done the same). This is when I realized Bioware screwed up the timing of the romance arc in ME1, it should have happen on the trip to virmire vs the trip to ilos. You could have had a situation where Shepard losses their LI to the war and how does Shepard respond to this loss in ME2?

For me I switch back and forth between both, whomever gets bomb duty dies. I found that Bioware pretty much screwed up on the kaiden/Ashley content post ME1. It was like they were too chickensh!t to write meaningful content that some players wouldn't see based on their choice so they pretty much cut them out of ME2 and gave them a reduced role in ME3 as they are out of the game for a good third of it. Bioware seems to always pull away from greatness when it comes to real choices that gate content. They get so close then go EEEEKKKK!!!! and run away. Its why saving the Rachni queen or killing the Queen has ZERO impact on the content of ME3 and why regardless of your choice you have to deal with a Rachni "Queen" problem in ME3. Which makes that choice I spent over 1/2 an hour agonizing over in ME1 feel utterly POINTLESS. And a few hundred EMS score difference based on the decision does not in fact make it a meaningful consequence.

I wish Bioware would grow "a pair" and gate content based on our choices beyond one mission (aka mages vs. templars DA:I) without pairing down the gated content significantly ala Ashley/Kaiden. Removing them from Me2 was just cowardly.

I send Ash with the salarians on my non tech-savvy characters. Kaidan knows how to prepare the bomb, Ash should deal with it :D Besides, Kirrahe orders her around :P

I usually save Kaidan.  Ash... I don't know, I just don't particularly like her.  Especially not the poems.  Her romance is painful.

Interesting note - in the dog metaphor that Ashley uses, humanity is the dog. Not the aliens. The aliens are the owner that would choose their own life over that of the dog/humanity. She's saying that the Council races would act in their own interests first before helping humanity, and therefore advising that humanity needs to maintain a level of self-interest.

My reason this time for saving Ash was that I want Ken and Gabby to get together in ME3. To do that you need Ash because somehow there relationship is tied to her approval of Shepard.

I'm pretty sure that the tie to Ashley was fixed in one of the patches....

On an aside, I really hated all of the pairing and crack pairings of all the characters in ME3.

Sans Shepard and the LI, I think they should have left a lot of that stuff alone, unless they actually built it up and did it well. They did neither.
