I'm pretty sure that the tie to Ashley was fixed in one of the patches....

Unfortunately it hasn't. Ken and Gabby hooking up is linked to Ashley's approval level.

I don't like Kaiden or Ashley. Kaiden is an apologist and Ashley is racist. Issues you can,if you cared to, help them grow out of. As a squady, Ashley is only mildly useful in the early missions until you get Garrus of Wrex. Only reason to save her over Kaiden is if she your Sheps LI. Kaiden is locksmith and crowd controller in ME1 Allowing you to focus Sheps skills on other things. But again, this is only for the early missions. By the time you get to Virmir neither of them is particularly needed for anything. I save the one I sent with the Salarians.

My honest reason for saving Ashley or Kaiden... I literally flip a coin. Ashley=heads, Kaiden=tails

Over the series, Kaiden is more involved in preparing for the Reaper invasion. If you want to make choices based on the end result then Kaiden is your huckleberry.... though threatening a drunk Ashley with the melodious voice of Joker on the ships com is worth it.

Kaidan is my FemShepard's best friend and true love. And he became this badass Spectre Major in ME3 with upgraded sexy body. Bah...

But seriously, its because I use him a lot in ME1 over Ashley. I would have like her better if its like Dragon Age where you can play as your Squad, the squad AI for weapons is plain abysmal

And I always send Ashley with the Salarians because she specifically asks for it and despite her prejudices. She redeemed herself in the end.

Three years ago as I was preparing for ME3 to be released, I had 20 different Commander Shepard(s).  10 broShep, 10 femShep, 10 with Kaidan, 10 with Ashley.  I romanced Kaidan once, Ashley once.  Because of Horizon and the reaction of both Ashly and Kaidan, Shepard never remained faithful to either one.  My femShep with Kaidan went with Jacob in ME2 got the pleasure of slapping Jacob in ME3.

I was never very fond of either and usually romanced Liara or no one in ME1 outside of the one Ashley romance and one Kaidan romance.  I think I was on my 4th run though ME3, 2nd with Ashley when I realized, she's not welcome on the Normandy.  I either pawned her off to Hackett or killed her during the coup.

Kaidan on the other hand grew on me, he put Horizon on him, Ash barely mentions it.  Kaidan tried to understand why Shepard was with Cerberus and the possibility those working for Cerberus were good people.  Ashley gets drunk, rolls on the floor, and either whines about her family or makes idiotic comments about Cerberus because she's unable to let it go.  Where Kaidan let it go, which is why he's allowed on the Normandy and Ashley usually ends up dead.

Any new runs I do in the future won't have Ashley surviving Virmire, as a character, she's not worth saving.  I still want to know what she did to get promoted 5 ranks between saving the Citadel from Seran and when the Reapers attacked Earth.

On an aside, I really hated all of the pairing and crack pairings of all the characters in ME3.

Sans Shepard and the LI, I think they should have left a lot of that stuff alone, unless they actually built it up and did it well. They did neither.

I just chalked it up to the big list of everyone acting strangely the closer we got to the ending.  You do make a good point, though.

Disney would define it as a 'trouser friendly kiss'.

I like Kaidan and I usually romance him.  Hence, I've saved him every time.  I've never gotten a good 'feel' for Ashley, and I know, even if I don't romance Kaidan, I'll miss him in ME3....terribly.

Maybe someday I'll save Ash.  I'd like to think I would. She's not a bad person, I just haven't warmed up to her.

In my current ME3 playthrough with Kaidan, I was able to have Ken and Gabby hookup.

First time I played ME1 it took me over 5 minuets to decide what to do.  Pretty much stared at the tv and thought, NOOOOOOOO we can save them both and then teared up as I made the choice.  Actually still have a slight tear when I make the call now even after playing it so long.

I ended up saving Kaidan in that game because he was my lieutenant.  Shepard also fell for him as the game went on.  I like Kaidan and usually saved him whether I was male or female.   I finally played a male who romanced Ash and eventually I took turns, sometimes starting the romance with Ash or Kaidan and still leaving them behind because "it was the right thing to do".

Horizon never bothered me because I hated Cerberus and agreed with the vs.  And I liked Kaidan's e-mail.  Then I found the voiced version Raphael Sbarge did and really wished they had done that in the game.   All Shepards who romanced Kaidan or Ash knew things would be ok eventually, though they would have to work at it.

Most of the romances in ME 3 could have been a bit better, but enjoyed Kaidan's comment about waking him up next time and the citadel dlc was fun.

Honestly it just depends on what Shepard I am playing and what my Shepard's relationship with the VS is.  Obviously if I am romancing one of them I will save the one I am romancing.  If not it just depends on who I want to see in ME 3.  I think across all my playthroughs it has been pretty even in terms of who I picked to survive.

Personally, I just like the idea of Ash and Shepard being at the beginning of something that could be good - bonding over talks about her family and their military careers - but then ending tragically with Ash's death better than the alternative - which I think it's... rather boring.

And, well, I 'connect' with Kaidan better, regardless of Shep's gender. As much as you can connect with a fictional character anyway.

Honestly, the only reason I save Ashley in the majority of my play throughs is so I can Renegade her in ME3.  I never liked her from the start.

No that's not correct. I always renegade the Ashley dialogue, never visit her in hospital and then either shoot her during the Coup or kick her off my ship, but Ken and Gabby always hook up.

The only time I let Ashley on the Normandy is if I'm doing a new play through on a new Profile and want her Bonus Powers.

Yes, BW patched that issue either with Leviathan or Extended Cut if I remember correctly. Ken&Gabby pairing isn't Ashley dependent anymore.

This might sound like a dumb question, but... why would someone share a dishonest reason?

What's a dishonest reason?  I have saved him because he was the love interest but in some games I had other reasons for saving one or the other.

Because they might not want to admit it's because of romance, perhaps?

Romances are, after all, the bane of any possible civility on the BSN. And players who prioritize romance in the game are often seen as shallow lemmings with no real life.

Doesn't bother me too much, though. I adore Kaiden, and I save him because I'm usually interested in pursuing his romance arc and listening to his voice say lots and lots of different things.

The only hookup that came out of left field was Ashley and James during the Citadel DLC.   But then, we did see the aftermath of their drinking binge the night before when James is cooking eggs, being trolled by Javik while Ashley is hot mess on the floor in the starboard observation lounge.

If you paid attention, Tali flirts with Garrus over the intercom when you walk in on Tali in the engineering deck.  Gabby and Ken was built up slowly every time you went to see them if you went down there between every mission.  Gabby telling Ken off when he starts talking about legs is priceless and a great scene.

If I'm not romancing Ashley, she's the one that dies. I think it makes more sense to send her with the salarians and when the time comes to make a decision, protecting the bomb is the most important thing.
