First playthrough saved Kaiden because love interest, saved Ashley once for my alternate Shepard. Since then I will only save Kaiden simply because I don't like Ashley.

In my very first playthrough I saved Kaiden cause Ashley was acting like a jerk towards the aliens. I do think she has the better story, if she dies than Kaiden. But when I reached Mass effect 2 and Kaiden was bitching at me for teaming up with Cerberus I decided next time I save Ashley. Well same problem then really. :D

I think I prefer Ashley over Kaiden cause he is just so.... emo? I don't really know a better word.

I always save Ashley, although reading this thread, I don't know why.. I always just considered Kaiden boring so thought "Might as well just sacrifice him" but I hate Ashley, I never use her on missions or romance her. I've also always just considered Kaiden as "The guy who died at Virmire." Next time I play, I think i'll save Kaiden, just to give him a chance at life.

First time round i saved Ashley as that Shep was romancing her.

Grew to dislike her character though so later runs always had me saving Kaidan alongside Kirrahe & Co.

Last run i was going to save Ashley but accidently ended up on romance path so she had to go boom.

I always save who I send with the Salarians based on numbers.  There is something like 3 marines at the bomb site vs a dozen or so Salarians in the assult.  Usually I leave Kiaden to oversee the bomb, they do say it still needs some work if I recall right and I can't help but think he has a better knowledge on such things while Ashley is a marine grunt and she may help the squishy specs ops survive.

Ashley was my FemShep's best friend and Kaidan was my FemShep's romance.

I saved Kaidan for the sex.

Literally that's it. My FemShep was a strong-willed and fiery renegade and I felt that Kaidan's bland personality clashed with that.

Ash: Yeah, well if you want me in a tin foil mini skirt and thigh-high boots, I'm gonna need dinner first... Uh... sir...

Do you really want to be seen in public with Kaiden dressed like that?? lol

First time it was simply because of romance (Ash).

Then I romanced Jack later.. and struggled trying to fit Ash somewhere.

Alright, I know it's like 30 pages already, but I've decided to place my own opinions. Before I played Mass Effect I watched a walkthrough of all 3 games, so the choice did not come as a surprise. I originally started with a femshep even though I'm a guy, and saved Kaidan... Ended up romancing Garrus in ME2. I have not played ME3 yet, despite watching a full walkthrough of it.

Ashley IS xenophobic, but my insides keep saying to save her in my new Male Infiltrator run through. Her religious aspect isn't something I pay attention to.

Kaidan isn't really that whiny, he's just soft. As a femshep I'll always save him. I plan on romancing Tali... Because she's Tali. You can't beat Tali. Anyways... Everyone always romances Liara or Ashley... But I'm not. I want to save Ashley, but Kaidan is far more interesting than her in ME3... Unless you're looking for eye candy... In which case the make-over'd Ashley is the way to go.

I personally have not made my choice... And have read endless forums... Which have provided me with no help.

Reasons to save Ashley:

1: Im a male Shepard... Just seems better.
2: She's a woman.
3: She can clear her name in ME3 by becoming a spectre.
4: She's eye candy
5: in ME3 she is equal rank to Shepard

Reasons to save Kaidan:

1: Nicer, does more in ME3 than Ashley
2: If you're a femshep he's attracted to you instantly.
3: He's one of the best squadmates in ME3
4: Not xenophobic
5: Higher Ranked than Ashley
6: Biotic

I saved Kaidan in my playthrough and edited the save for having Ashley in another ME 3 playthrough. I have to say Kaidan is way better, in ME 3 there a some parts where he actually shows some character. If you already are in a romance, you can also avoid his awkard try to flirt with Shepard. I never really liked Ashley because of her "strong woman" attitude and her xenophobic views, not to say that I find her looks... strange, to put it best. Something about her face just doesn't seem right.

But all in all, both Kaidan and Ashley are quite boring compared to other characters this game has to offer. Maybe they're interesting LIs (never romanced them) but otherwise they aren't just as fitting as Garrus/Tali for the "bro/sis" role.

Currently the reason I have for saving Ash is that I was Ken and Gabby to hook up and for some bizarre reason that is only possible if you have a good relationship with the former gunnery chief.

A shame Bioware never found a way to fix that.

that's weird since I have no problem hooking them up with Kaidan around. You just need to see them frequently after missions and then you'll get the chance. In fact I usually go down there just to eavesdrop Tali and Garrus.

I've only saved Kaidan once on my current playthrough. Wish I hadn't, he's so whiny and irritating. It's always going to be Ashley from now on for me.

To my great sadness and embarrassment, it looks like there is a bug here that got introduced just before ship. It looks like the test for "is it time for ambient dialog in engineering" accidentally got switched to "are you good friends with Ashley". How did this bug happen? I have no idea, and need to do some detective work. This doesn't just block Ken and Gabby banter, but I think this blocks some Tali and Garrus banter in engineering too. As it stands now to see that banter, I believe you'll need to get Ashley in your party and take her on missions and/or give Ashley lots of attention by speaking to her and giving her the gift in the hospital. If you have Kaidan in your game, obviously this can't be done, and that sucks.

Though the fix is easy, the difficult part is getting the fix into a patch of some sort. Getting content fixes into patches is much harder than you'd think. It's a giant process. I'll try to get that fix through, but sadly, the odds of getting this type of fix into a patch is very low. It just kills me that so many of the people who care about Ken and Gabby (those of you reading this forum) didn't get to see that content. I tested the heck out of it too for weeks before ship. You just don't now how sorry I am.

 From http://forum.bioware...abby/?bioware=1.

I've never heard that they fixed it with a patch and I've certainly never been able to get them to hook up with Kaidan in my party but every time with Ashley.

My first playthrough was with all patches and I was able to get them hooked up. I had Ashley saved though. When I get around to play an imported character again, I'll be saving Kaidan. Will keep an eye out. I seem to remember the patch notes specifically addressing that situation though.

To me she looks like she had a makeover job in ME3, all plastic, ugh. She's as bad as Allers imo ^_^

Is that a PC problem only? I play on PS3 and in my last playthrough I was an ass to Ash, saved Kaidan and still got Gabby and Ken to hook up. The only thing I did was frequently visit and listen to their banter. And play poker

I like Ashley. She's really cool, badass, rough but lovable from the start but her Mass Effect 3 look is really... really.... dreadful. Its like someone took a beautiful woman from ME1 and pump her with fillers, botox, silicone and gloss. Her features were barely even expressive... and I'm so sorry Ash, I can't look at your new face too long without wincing... and I always felt like I'm a terrible person to think her like that.

I still think her appearance is OK, but she got a little boring and "normalized". And she used to talk more crap, sassed people, and had a kind of Renegade thing going on. She's probably the most Renegade after Wrex. Udina says her officer training chilled her out -- but it's not for the better.

Speaking of, I was looking through the artbook recently and their first me1 concept was short hair... looked cool. She could've been the Cassandra before Cassandra.

It's kinda funny because I wanted to ship MShep and Kaidan way before I even started playing ME1 for the first time (two months ago or so, I think) and when all came down to Virmire and that whole situation, I stopped playing it for a bit and found myself thinking whether I should save Kaidan or Ashley for pretty much 10/15 minutes.
I mean, I could save Ashley. It's just that she never grew on me as a character, she never sparked that interest that I felt with my other squadmates and even though I felt there was some potencial in her, I ended up saving Kaidan instead. I sent him to the bomb site while Ashley went along with the Salarians and then the moment in which I had to choose someone had finally arrived. I kept imagining all kind of scenarios that could happen if I went for Ashley: "What if the bomb doesn't go off? What if Saren, for some reason, manages to steal it and put it in another area full of civilians like the Citadel or some place like that, for instance? What if Saren stops the marines from placing that thing there in the first place?".
I kept getting back and forth with these situations in my head and then I finally managed to make a decision: I had to go to the bomb site because I needed to not only get the job done but also to ensure that the bomb does go off. It was indeed a tough choice, losing a squadmate like that. After that, I started to care more for Kaidan and just wanted to learn more of his personal background and story arc. Throughout the entire trilogy, I felt like he had such a great character development that I just kept rooting for me and eventually chose him as a LI for my MShep in ME3.
I don't think he's that whiny like some people seem to believe. He has that soft side of him that made me invested in his story. But hey, who am I to judge another's opinion?
