I always save Kaidan. I like him more than Ashley and he is more useful to me as a squadmate.

Untill ME3, I saved once Kaidan, then Ashley, then Kaidan, then Ashley.....
But after I get ME3, I always save Kaidan because Ashley in ME3 is both so annoying and useless. I have Garrus who can use sniper rifles and I don't get any squadmates to use the SR anyway. Also, she isn't worthy of Spectre status because she is not exceptional. I can't get myself think that she is more than an ordinary soldier. I liked her more than Kaidan in ME1 but in ME3, it's ruined.

Honestly, as much as Ashley bores me, it annoys me to no end when people call her 'racist' and/or 'xenophobic'.  Put simply: she's not racist or xenophobic.  She's xenocautious, which is entirely different.  And hell, that only really applies to her in ME1.  ME2-3?  Not really.

What I mean by 'xenocautious' is that she's not entirely trusting of aliens, which, really, can be applied to most humans in the MEverse.

As for the militarism part...... well, I don't really care about it, tbh.  I'm the kind of person who's interested in whatever relates to the military, even though I don't want to join it myself, so I guess that's part of why I don't really care about it.  * shrugs *

Yeah, calling her xenophobic racist is a bit too much exaggeration. Rather than racist, I think some sort of 'space age nationalism' would be more accurate. She does have prejudice against aliens, but it's not that bad.

Another thing I like about Ashley dying is her quote in ME2: "Human or alien, we're all just animals"

When what she really said in ME1 was: "can't tells the aliens apart from the animals"

I imagine my Shep had a good laugh when he first heard the 'quote' then stop suddenly, reminiscing his time with Ash.

I'm playing a male Shepard who's romancing Ashley this playthrough and I'm having a hard time finding a good RP reason for saving Ashley. It makes sense for me to leave Kaidan with the bomb and send Ashley with Kirrahe's troops, because Kaidan's better at tech and Ashley's better at "soldiering." Following from that, it makes sense for me to save the person with the bomb because it has to go off.

So, aside from me just wanting to see how things play out differently I'm having a hard time RP-wise.

Because Kaidan sucked, the things he said about humanity made me facepalm, because of that he died.

Basically my opinion, ME3 sealed Ashley's fate for me. Before that I just tossed the dice. Kaidan, just like Miranda, is MVP in combat. All sentinel squad mates are.

I have two reasons:

I got stupidly locked into an Ashley romance because I talked to her too much.

I wanted to romance Kaidan in ME3.

First time through I had Kaiden at the bomb and wasn't sure what would happen if I didn't go back for him.

Now it depends on the character I'm playing since neither are particularly endearing to me. If I have any sort of bio/tech powers Ashley lives. If I'm a space marine Kaiden lives.

Don't mind either of them, the aliens are just more interesting to me.

Never had such a problem with Ashley in ME with the exception of that sentence. It´s understandable that some military people would object to letting a bloodthirsty merc, a disgruntled excop and a girl, looking for something valuable, run around freely on the Alliance finest frigate. ;)

Her new appearance in ME 3 bothered me more.

I'm on my second playthrough as a male Shepard this time and romancing Ashley. Just today I saved her on Virmire and still don't think it was the right choice. I'd rather have my biotic senior officer back but I'm at least interested in how this will be different.

Depends on the save... if I have to take my primary one as an example - I saved Ashley, since she was my romance (screw the military chain, I'm greedy bastard :D). Second reason I had - I sent her with salarians (I consider her better choice for frontal attacks with that heavy armor and full set of weaponry, while Kaidan as at least partial tech specialist should handle the bomb better) and I wanted to save them too (they somehow end up on Normandy even if you go back to the bomb, I know, but that was my reasoning at that moment).

There are various RP reasons I like to give my Shepard, like making the mission a priority and stuff, but really...? I save Kaidan because he's a Sentinel and... because he's my Shepard's pet... and because he's one of my favourite characters. And I really don't like what they did to Ash in ME3.

My Adept playthrough was a lot harder without Kaidan. Javik isn't a great replacement....

Haha, I'm an Adept right now and I never use Kaidan currently even though I planned it. And instead Javik is a constant squadmate. Really liking it!

Also, I can't believe I am finally doing this, but my next Shepard will leave Kaidan behind on Virmire

Javik's best ability was Lift Grenade but those were limited. His strength was his particle rifle and even this is better if you have someone with special ammo. Reave is always better than Dark Channel and it works great against Banshees and Brutes. But its always better to be the detonator than the primer... so I don't like having Reave as my special ability. Liara is great in the earlier game but her only usefulness was in the end was her Warp. Either way, micromanaging the battlefield in ME3 isn't fun... life without Kaidan is hard on Insanity.

I never use his Lift Grenades. I use Pull with him, then my Throw/sometimes Warp. I have Energy Drain as bonus power to deal with shields quickly and make use of James's Incendiary Squad Ammo. Dark Channel only on all the bigger enemies like Banshees, Harvesters etc.

It's really quite easy with this setup and I don't miss Kaidan at all :D

Kaidan is very versatile and you can use him with almost any class for detonations. I couldn't find Javik's use yet. Dark Channel is good but I can do without it as well.
My only problem with Kaidan is that he doesn't use the assault rifles I give him. He doesn't shoot, just stays there. May be he doesn't like the ones I'm giving to him :)

The versatility is one of my favourite things. I can play whatever class I wish and take whatever other squaddie I wish and he'll always compliment them in both games. In ME1, I can pretty much just sit down and polish my nails sometimes because he's stupidly overpowered, opens all crates, hacks all devices, heals the team, etc.

You mean he doesn't shoot with ARs in ME3? That's odd. I've never seen that happen. (I've had him use the Valkyrie, Mattock, and Saber. Never noticed a problem.) Maybe a bug or something?

As for Javik, Pull and Slam can be detonated and Slam has pretty interesting effects when combined with Singularity, I've found. He goes down really fast, though.

He does? Maybe I'm lucky, but that didn't happen to me yet, if I'm not mistaken :D James 2 or 3 times I think.

Maybe I just suck at micromanaging him. I remember taking him and Liara into Armax Arena and I ended up having to revive him several times. It's better during normal gameplay, though.

I don't remember James going down almost at all. James is a beast.

Ah, ok, I haven't done Armax stuff with him. I hate the arena and never bother with it :D

He is, but I didn't spec him in Fortification at all, haha.

I gave him those weapons too. He uses his pistol but something is wrong with the ARs. As for being overpowered; sometimes in ME1 he goes on ahead to shoot the enemy and finishes off some, even before I see the enemy myself :)

I let my squadmates go. I don't order them anything. Their power usage is on; they just wander around and shoot. I don't even use their power usually unless I'm in trouble. That's why I'm generally the one detonating, not priming. Kaidan's reave and overload strip down the enemies before I engage at them then I detonate with anything possible.

That's understandable. It's just an arena after all. I like shooting stuff well enough and wanted to try the challenges. (The Collectors on Elite are pretty brutal.) And you can use all the old squaddies! That makes me so happy. (Kaidan + Samara = My dreams have come true.  <3) I guess I'm easy to please. It's true I did stop playing once I broke the scoreboard and won the main prize, though.

Ohh, that explains it then, heh.

Yeah, it's the same why I never play multiplayer, it's just boring for me :D I also don't care about the old squaddies too much tbh. Ahem ^_^

I did get the trophies for the arena though. That was before I started playing on Insanity and it was so hard for me even on Normal, hahaha. Maybe I should try it out once again to see how much I get my a** whipped

For that he's still surprisingly tankish, he once walked straight into a turret and didn't die  Maybe I'll try Fortification at some point, but right now I don't want it messing with the Carnage cooldown.
