I think if you look at it objectively the case for Kaidan to die is overwhelming

Kaidan is an experienced Tech while Ash is experienced in combat situations so the only logical choice is for Kaidan to arm the nuke and Ash to join the Salarians

Bearing that in mind

- Sacrificing Ash means sacrificing the Salarians.
- The AA towers could be used against the Normandy. It makes sense to wipe out the forces there
- The Alliance Millitary have put the Williams family through enough already
- Kaidans L2 implants give him crippling headaches. His quality of life isn't great. The human thing to do is to put him down
- Do you really want to run the risk of being stuck in a room having a conversation with Kaidan and Jacob in ME3
- Headaches because of L2 implants, maybe, or maybe Kaidan is in fact indoctrinated. You can't risk letting him live
- Ash isn't just a hellcat on the battlefield you know
- Have you listened to Kaidan?

Romanced Ashley so.... I abused my power and saved her. Oh, and she was leading the Salarians in battle.

Personally, Ashley is more interesting person than Kaiden. She always speak of what she thinks, brave enough to confront anything that is not right. She could make herself a general one day if she keeps on fighting, although she doesn't feel comfortable working with Alien, but she will cooperate with them when Galaxy is at stake.

I would like to see more about her than Kaiden in future DLC.

EDIT: She also can be a real good friend who give honest advises to me, that's the main reason I save her.

I liked both characters, but I saved Ashley for a great many of the same reasons you did, Truth. Ashley was leading that team of Salarians, so saving as many mission personnel as possible was a priority. My Shepard may be the Butcher of Torfan, but I try to avoid losing a vast majority of the people under my command where possible.

I didn't like Ash's human-centric and traditional thoughts or attitude at all. Militaristic, religious, interested in poetry... not my thing. Her interruptions, smartassing and impatience at times bothered me too. I liked Kaidan more but he was never one of my favourite charecters either. But generally I saved him instead of Ash. Romanced Ash is a lot more tolerable to listen though.

gosh when I started I had nothing against either one of them.

In fact my first playthrough I was romancing Kaiden by the time Vrmire came along my femshep was deeply in love with the man.

I didn't realize how boring he was till later.

2nd playthrough I saved Ash just to try her out.

Between Kaiden's uber boringness and Ashley's racism its come to who do I hate more?

Too make matters worse both these characters are tossed out just for a brief cameo in ME 2 where no matter what they think you're traitor... God forbid I actually try to explain the situation to them. Yeah thanks Kaiden I wasted a perfectly good romance option with the worst character in the game.

In future playthroughs i think I'm just gonna flip a coin lol.

Oddly enough my only 2 personal Sheps who I imported to ME2, I had my MaleShep save Kaiden and my FemShep save Ash. The former was done on 2 partial grounds, firstly, the squad I generally had my MaleShep Soldier with was Wrex and Kaiden, so it seemed natural to save someone who had been useful throughout most of the fight. The second reason was more of a silly 'class' thing in that Shep was already a soldier so I didn't really need another. For my Infiltrator FemShep saving Ash, it was a combination of sharing the same views on aliens and considering Kaiden more suitable for the task at hand. Now if my FemShep had a bigger choice, she would have chosen Tali because she hates the Quarian and never wanted her on the ship in the first place.

I have got another ME playthrough lined up and I know it is going to be Kaiden who dies on that run because my Shep is going to be romancing Ash and there ain't no way he going to leave his Gunny to die.

It's always a difficult choice....but I usually end up saving Ashley.

Why? Kaidan's boring is the easy answer. He's just kinda there. I've started games with the intent to kill Ashley and when the moment came to choose I couldn't do it.

I can't really describe what it is about Kaidan that leads me to kill him 9 times out of 10. It's not that I hate the guy, either. I find him useful. I like the voice actor a lot. He seems to be a generally good guy. I just can't not kill him.

Maybe he should have been more engaging to the crew. He's literally the only squad mate to ever speak to Joker. He mourns Jenkins. Shepard asks Kaidan for the opinions of the entire crew. And the doc seems to enjoy telling stories about Kaidan. It would have been cool to see him interact with the whole crew more often. Make him the heart of the ship....instead he's just kinda there.

I have never killed Ashley, I just couldn't do it. My only regret is that Shepard comes out with that lame

"I'm sorry Kaidan, I had to make a choice"

I would have much preferred if he had said

"I'm sorry Kaidan, I just don't like you............plus I'm slipping one into Ashley. Welcome to Nukesville, population You"

Devon Shepard, male Vanguard: Saved Kaidan because he’s a fellow biotic, an officer, and a friend. Ash was a soldier, she knew her role and died a hero. (Romanced Liara in both games)

Simone Shepard, female Adept: Saved Kaidan because he’s a fellow biotic, an officer, and a friend. Ash was a soldier, she knew her role and died a hero. (Romanced Liara in both games)

Martín Shepard, male Sentinel: Saved Kaidan because he has a crush on him, and because they have a lot in common. Oh, and he’s an officer. (Romanced Liara, then Miranda)

Leah Shepard, female Engineer: Saved Kaidan, because the tactical situation demanded a quick decision, and it seemed like the move that had the greatest chance of success. (Romanced Kaidan in both games)

Ethan Shepard, male Infiltrator: Killed Ashley, because she was getting clingy and he was after the blue scientist chick. (Romanced Liara, then Jack)

Ashley Shepard, female Soldier: Killed Ashley, because, HELLO her name is also Ashley and she doesn’t know how to shut her fat mouth. Tell me how to run my ship, will you? (“Hit that” with Kaidan and Jacob, the latter of whom subsequently died, oh well).

And Kirrahe says that the bomb is only as dependable as the person who sets it.  So for *me*, sending Kaidan to set the bomb, and protecting the mission objective once it was set, was most important.

- The Salarians make it back without my help, and they were totally prepared for a suicide mission, as seen by Kirrahe's speech.  I always do the objectives to make sure Kirrahe and his men make it back to the ship, but I never go to the AA Tower.  Their lives are not as important as making sure the facility is destroyed.

- If Saren disables the bomb while I'm at the AA Tower, the Normandy is screwed anyway, because I have a feeling that in a one-on-one fight with Sovereign, the Normandy would lose.   Just a guess.

- That is not a compelling arguement at all.  If anything, Ashley welcomes the chance to die a hero in order to restore her family's honor.  I'm pretty sure her character would be insulted if she was told that she was saved because of sympathy for her family problems.

- This is pretty obnoxious, but Kaidan is a stable L2, and he never mentions his headaches to a female Shepard.  He obviously does his job, and does it well, and even after Shepard dies, he is promoted twice by the Alliance, so I guess he deals with his migraines well enough.

- OH NO TWO HUMAN MALE PARTY MEMBERS!!!  So???

- Another ridiculous argument.  Next.

- I'm sure she is.

- Yes, and that is why I have romanced him on most of my characters.  Image IPB

I've never been able to save Ashley. I just can't do it. The poetry-spouting bitter soldier wants to die. She wants to restore her family's honor and make it so that her sisters can have real careers. She wants to wipe out her grandfather's failure. How can I hold her back?

Burn in peace.

But, if I was trying to be objective, Soldiers are a dime a dozen. Human Biotics are not. Therefore, Kaidan is much more valuable to the Alliance than Ashley and his recovery should be a much higher priority.

Am sure will replay ME1 again to kill her before ME3 :P

You go Teen.

I always save Ash. Ash is my favorite character that bioware has every made. I really like Kaidan also. He is a buddy to my shep. So Vimire sucks. I hate it. I wish I could save both. No matter what people say about how they Role Play it. It really comes down to which character you like more. I could actually think of other people to leave with the bomb, for me that would be the ME2 crew.

I've always saved Ashley. This is a personal decision rather than a strategic one, though I never appreciated Kaidan's skills much, anyway. Ignoring the fact that I romanced her (for many of the same reasons), it was still a fairly simple decision for me. Kaidan's character was pretty pale, without a lot of life or personality. Ashley has very strong opinions, backed up by self-confidence and a lot of heart. Her background is well-developed and supports her character - yes, even in ME2. I was initially frustrated by her reaction, like everyone else, but it is true to her character. Additionally, her letter after that meeting does even more to reveal her state of mind. I appreciate a woman who speaks her mind and is willing to stand up for her beliefs.

I sometimes wonder if the devs thought that people would be more attached to the human / potential love interest characters, and thus decided to sacrifice one, or decided that since people love aliens, no one would mind offing one of the humans.

It really blows knowing that people who liked Ashley AND Kaidan are penalized in both games for having a minority opinion.

It fits with the story arcs of my Shepard.
Two FemSheps romanced him.
One ManShep was biotic buddies with him.
One FemShep decided to go to the AA tower because  it was Kaidan's decision for detonating the nuke early.  Why should Ashley die for his decision?
And I have two ManSheps who romance Ashley.
In the end, I'll save both equally, because I love both characters.

Except, funnily, you didn't get to kill him the first time, but allowed him to heroically sacrifice his life in the line of duty for the sake of stopping the Reapers.

It makes me sad how so many of these threads turn into Ash-hating or Kai-hating. I believe that fans who are truly able to appreciate the merits of one character will also appreciate the merits of the other. Kaidan and Ashley are foils to each other and work best side by side.

Estelindis , I agree with you, it is sad. But people can be stupid.

I am an Ash fan, I always save Ash. But I really like Kaidan. My sheps best buddy. The best friend the Ash thread ever had is the Kaidan thread. I really liked having Ash and Kaidan in my squad. I really hate Virmire.
