Alenko is the superior officer. I like Ashley a lot, but the grunts are grunts for a reason. Die proud, Soldier.

The outcome of whether Kaiden or Ashley die depend on a few previous decisions. The first is how to separate the two: I send Ashley to help the assault with the Salarians because she is an experienced Marine Rifleman and combat veteran. As a lieutenant, Kaiden should be technically proficient enough to properly arm a nuclear device. As for when the second Geth dropship attacks the nuke site, I leave Kaiden with device. I've already arranged for extraction at Ashley's site; the crew's best chance for survival and hence continuing the pursuit of Saren is waxing the remaining Geth combat teams and escaping. Not to mention the fact that Kaiden is a Marine officer and therefore will always stand in between his subordinates and danger.

I felt Kaiden to be quite dull, and Ash to be a more interesting character, but on the battlefield, Kaiden seemed to have more flexability. He had great tech powers, which worked great with my soldier skills and liara (my love interest) biotics. I also felt that it was poetic for her to die with another race's soldiers, and after seeing just the amount of plaudits she gets from damn near every species in ME2, I think I made the right decision. The Williams name now means something.

It wasn't, "save Williams", so much as, "I'm not saving Alenko" for me. I just hate him. He's such a boring, whining, goody goody. "Wah wah, L2 implants, wah wah Conatix, wah wah jump zero." Just shut up and arm the bomb already. I'm going to save the Salarians. You stay here and hold the line. :)

Same here, i found both ashley and kaiden annoying so it was more a case of who i liked least really.

Couldn't decide really. I liked both characters I don't see why people whine about not liking them cause ash was a xenophobe or kaiden is a whiner or whatever thier reasons. So in the end I found a coin flipped it and gave the unlucky one a 21 round salute.

Alenko may have been a higher rank, but Williams was the better soldier. She would have been promoted if not for her families history.

I definitely like Ash; I think that her more 'controversial' opinions that she brings up in the first game just make her a more fleshed out character, rather than just another 'chick with a gun' type that we seem to see everywhere these days.

Here's how it went on my 1st (cannon) play through:

My Shepard was sprung so I was gonna protect Ashley from going a suicide run with the Salarians. As soon as Kirrahe started the describing the mission I knew Ashley was coming with me to arm the bomb. "Gotta make sure my baby is safe.  Sorry Alenko." I think I'm in the clear especially when I here Kirrahe die (didn't know how to save him then) and Kaiden takes over. "It sounds bad over there. Good thing you're with me Ash!"  Then the part comes up where you have to leave Ashley by the bomb and then I start to get nervous again. "Oh no!" Needless to say when the second choice comes up I run back to bomb to save Ashley. "Whew!  Girl you nearly gave me a heart attack!"  And to top off the simp fest I tell Ashley I could never leave her behind behind in front of the whole crew.

I'm a horrible commander, but all's fair in love and war.

Well I didn't care about either of them so I saved Ashley because I thought she was higher of rank. but I later discovered this was a mistake.

Ash: You should've saved me, I'm a lower rank!

Shepard: Whoa Whoa Whoa! Wait a sec, Gunnery Chief is a lower rank than Lieutenant?

Ash: Er, yeah.

Shepard: But doesn't "Gunnery Chief" sound far more higher ranking than "Lieutenant"?

Ash: You didn't know this through all these years in the Alliance?

Shepard: Oh **** oh ****...er, there's been a misunderstanding.

My choice was simple mechanics; I played an Infiltrator and a Soldier Squadmate was more useful than a Sentinel.

That's funny, 'cause I played an Infiltrator and a Sentinel Squadmate was more use to me. Garrus, Kaidan and Shepard were a Sabotaging, Overloading, Damping triple threat.

Indeed. I also played an Infiltrator, and the only two setups you can have for a "balanced" team (33% each biotics, combat, and tech) are Garrus plus Liara or Kaidan and Wrex. I went with Kaidan and Wrex: they give unmatched versatility and survivability, in my opinion. But in neither of those options does Ashley feature. (Which isn't to say that I didn't like her or never took her with me, but I saw no reason to make her part of my Infiltrator's team for anything other than roleplaying reasons... and the occasional gameplay reason that sometimes a three person Immunity squad is handy.)

It seemed pretty... let's say homosexual to me to take kaiden at that time, so I took Ashley even though I don't like her neither.

Because she was one of the characters i use the most in the game which granted it makes sense to save kaiden alenko because he is higher ranked.

Plus i always play as a male shepherd and i much preferred Ashley to Liara so obviously I did not want to lose the main romance i wished for shepherd.

Also i preferred Ashley Williams as a character she has the mix of being funny and character with more depth than Kaiden in my opinion

I'm currently playing ME1 again, this time at insanely difficult setting (not so insane, it turns out...I'm not really getting my ass handed to me all that often). I am, right this instant, at the point on Virmire where I either go to Ash who armed the nuke, or to Kaidan, who is with the Salarians.

I always play soldier (best mix of weapons available and nice tech abilities) and am always playing as myself, a guy. This time I have been playing straight romance of Ash with no play for Liara at all (seeing if I can avoid the little catfight near the end). It has been a while since I played ME1 so I guess I misremembered how this choice went down. I THOUGHT the person I sent with the Salarians was the one to bite the dust so I have been assuming that Kaidan's ass is done for...but now I have the dialog option of going to either Ash or Kaidan... Crap. While I want to save Ash for straight-up (so to speak) romance reasons, I did chat up Kaidan a bit more this play through and decided he's an OK bloak too.

So...I WANT TO SAVE THEM BOTH DAMNIT. I want the option of ordering Joker to pick up Ash in the Normandy and then go to the towers to provide air cover for Kaidan and his troops while me and my mates (Wrex and Liara) fight to get to Kaidan at the gun towers on foot. What the hell use is Normandy if it cannot even do a couple straffing runs? Sheesh.

Anyway...I know I'm going to save Ash but I was putting this mission off as long as possible because I HATE this decision.

Ash has to win 'cause she has the greatest ass when compared to Kaidan's, ya know.

So you let Kaidan die because it seemed less gay?

I choose Kaidan, and yes, I do romance him. Even if I didn't romance him, I still like him way better as a character than Ashley. While Ashley is a good soldier, she does get annoying to me. Plus, Kaidan fits my team better. (Kaidan, me, Garrus= dream team! Sub in Wrex every now and then too and it's a done deal! I don't need anyone else.) I will say that I don't hate Ashley. I mean, I do feel sadness when she dies because she and my FShep are buds..... but I just can't bring myself to kill Kaidan.

If I could, I'd rather leave Tali. LOL Sorry, but she seems to need a lot of attention during battle, and I can't stand having to babysit someone else while I'm fighting. Totally useless to me in ME1 and ME2..... :-)

Ish. Garrus was totally worthless to me until around half way through ME1. If I had a team made up of Garrus and Tali, the FIRST one down in a fight was always Garrus. If the enemy stared at him too hard, down he'd go. I kept having to unity - resurrect Garrus and expend medkits on him to keep him up and fighting.

Ash, by far, cranks your combat skill rating to the roof...too bad that's all she's got. Not even a LITTLE tech.

To me, the most annoying thing about Ash was the religious crap.

I left Ashley, I like Kaidan better and I don't understand why everybody says he's a whiner. At least to me it never seems that he's whining about something. I also dislike that Ashley dislikes aliens too much, I don't care if people believe she's racist or not I still don't like her because of that.

Kaiden could arm the nuke and he made sure it didn't go off. (I don't think ash could get the nuke to go off on time.)

I really like Ashley (She is my LI after all)

And saving her seemed like the best way to make sure the salarians got out alive to tell the council about indoctronation and the reapers. (Guess what didn't happen?)
