That's insane.  BG2's storyline blows 1 out of the water.  Sounds like you only care about the mechanics.

Seriously, I think playing Baldur's Gate should be mandatory for anybody who want's to call themselves a serious gamer.  Also I think it should be mandatory before being able to post in these forums, but i'm a crazy person.

I love Baldurs Gate...but...

DAMN, the graphics make me cry on my enormous 30".

I just can't get into it anymore. If it's ever rebuilt with a new engine I will be thrilled.

Just wanted to say it out loud.

And yes, I am aware of what I have just said.

I play on a 47 in HDTV and I play at 800x600 because I dont like the widescreen mod and looks fantastic to me. Not like just acceptable but it acually looks beatuful to me. Sprites are dated sure but the hand drawn environments are amazing. And I still love the music and envronmental sounds.

If somebody rebuilt it exact in a new engine It would be huge I think. Old die hards like me would play it and it people who are younger could experience it for the first time. It would spark the greatest purist RPG revival movement ever. Consoles would fade out. PC gaming would dominate again. Everbody would hold hands and rejoice and their would be world peace.

But It will never happen...

For a moment there I was in Nirvana....

oh breathe deep these momentus dreams,
and hope there shall be awakenings of such splendour.
If not in our lives, those of our childrens.

BioWare hear us.  You're our only hope.

I care about gameplay.  The story is just teh setting, and BG2's setting was far more restrictive.

It's absurd that BG2 only lets you travel to zones where you already have some quest that points you there.  There's no allowance at all for wandering off for your own reasons.  It's a significant loss of roleplaying freedom.

Is there an emoticon for a jaw hitting the floor? I mean, never, in all these years?

But DAO did the same thing without particularly bothering you.

Worth thinking about, I guess. The sprites go away in a new engine, to be replaced by ....what? Would the new engine be 2d isometric, or 3d?

No, it bothered me.

It was actually kind of annoying to see the re-emergence of that feature.  NWN didn't have it, and KotOR hid it a lot better.

Every time I get a new PC I make a point of installing both BG and BG2, but I haven't had the time to wrap up the series.

I'm sure you've gone on the record on them before, but I'm curious as to how you feel about Fallout 1-2.

I would love to see that happen - fantastic potential. I don't have a problem with playing it in it's original glory, however.

There is a BGI remake mod in progress for NWN2, I think they've advanced allot but don't know any info on release date. Check out the NWN2 forums guys, I'm also eager to play that one.

Fallout 1 and 2 came out during a dark period for gaming for me.  I simply wasn't playing new release games between 1992 and 1998.  So I missed them.

I have fiddled with them briefly (though not as much as I would have expected, given that I count Wasteland among my all-time top 5), and I never even really got the hang of how Action Points worked.

From what I know of them, they should be terrific RPGs.

Ah, AP is an abstraction of how quickly your character is able to move, and a combat turn is a fixed amount of time. Therefore, the more AP your character has, the more they were able to accomplish in that turn. So I think of it as realtime with a mandatory pause despite the fact combat is basically turn based.

Anyway, whether or not you knew that - they are pretty darn good games.

I got that.  I just had trouble managing them - it seemed like I couldn't apportion my actions efficiently enough.

I do own both of them, and have for many years.  I just haven't had a lot of time for gaming recently (I have a two-year-old).

I would love 2d isometric again. I really did love the hand drawn/painted environments, You just cant create that level of UNIQUE detail with 3d.  Every area looks different because every area is drawn different, while in 3d it just using altering, modifying and reusing the same textures and models.

As far as the the characters go, 2d or 3d doesnt really matter as much as fixed camera. If its stationary isometric then there is so much less graphical work to do, which leads budget and time for more dialog, game length, choices and the stuff that really matters.

BG and BGII banter was definatly better.. while DAO was interesting, I definatly chuckled many times but what it was missing was the BG style.. for those that dont know what that is ill explain.

BG and BGII both had 3 way bantars. this ment many bantars would have extra input added by other characters depending on who was in the party,..

DA had a few three way banters, but yeah nothing like BG's. I love banter, the more the merrier.

I too support more three ways in BioWare games.  Intra-party conversations always ruled and added so much life to your companions.  I do wish there was a way they could be prevented from going off when you were within a certain distance of baddies though, since I've had a couple broken off by monster attacks.

where there 3 way bantars?  I dont think i ever saw one.  perhaps durring a quest cinimatic, but not the talkie ones that just happend on triggers.  Like the bridge in lothering for example.

as far as them going off at bad times.. i know what you mean.. they are done by map triggers,  basically the trigger is just in a bad location and needs to be moved..  as soon as a bantar starts hit pause.. and listen to it..

Morrigan + Oghren + Alistair, Morrigan + Zevran + Alistair (or Oghren or Leliana) to name a few.

You know another thing that i dont think anyone really touched on, BG and BG2, both had an added lvl of dificulty.. there was perma death. And encounters could be insainly harder, especially your first time through the game. I had more than one party member just drop dead in beregost..

Hi, im silke, thespian extordanare.. OHHH no Not a bolt of lightning !! Poof there goes poor kalid.. dead before he even started.. guess i better go track down another fighter.. Ohh goodie Kagan is in town and wants to come along !! forget that caravan we have other things to do.. hope he doesnt get made and leave.. Ohh wait he did, all he wanted was to get drunk and fight with jaheria.. im glad he is gone anyway.. good ridance.. , I wonder who is in this rock statue.. maybe she will do she has to be better than some crazy ranger that has a pet hamspter.. Or do i?? ahh well atleast the local pub has some great music.. maybe ill just listen to some stories for a while..

man i really need to play through BG again.. I think im gonna go DL it at gog.com 10 bucks.. what a great deal...
