Some time ago, I purchased this, Baldur's Gate and Throne of Bhaal. I started playing Baldur's Gate, got a few chapters in and, well that was two months ago. Are there any benefits at all to important a character? I know the first games plot, I've read a Let's Play etc. I could of course finish the first but erm. . . It's really, really dull and the gameplay is terrible frankly and the lack of ANY contact with party members just kills it. So, I ask you, should I just skip to Baldur's Gate 2?

If you stick to the main plot line and avoid side quests you can finish BG fairly quickly. Simply for the sake of continuity I enjoyed finishing the first game and still replay it.

If you want more party interaction download the NPC project from Gibberlings 3 and the banter pack from Pocket Plane.

An imported character will have more experience points (and probably a higher level) than a created character. You also have the ability to have -much- higher starting stats, since BG1 includes 1 each of the stat tomes, except for wisdom which has 3. This is particularly important for clerics, due to the bonus spells they get from high wisdom. 18 start +3 tomes +1 Hell Trial +1 Machine of Lum +1 Deck Of Many Things = 24 wisdom.

You can also import one or 2 select items from BG1.

But why don't you play with BG Tutu or BGT?

If you really enjoy a magic or thief oriented game, then I can see your problem with BG1, since it favors fighters. But otherwise, using all the suggestions made above, it is worth going thru BG1 once. Exploring the city of Baldurs Gate is fun. Both BG1 and 2 are complex and open ended enough that reading Walkthroughs and summaries doesn't really give the flavor of the game.

BG1 =/= dull. It's 'dated' but anything but dull. Compare this to most other CRPGs at the time. In fact, compare it to any RPG at the time. BG gave you complexity, choice, freedom to explore, lush environments, beautiful and intense music AND a plotline which makes sense. That's the important thing, not much had standards this high at the time.

You make it sound as if you could find modern RPGs of Baldur's Gate's quality without problems, Chebby.

Mods breathe new life into Baldur's Gate 1, I don't think I could play the original (non-Tutu), I've been weaned on mod content too much for my liking.

The BG1 NPC Project adds in-party banter between NPCs which can be amusing, it's well written too. Various other mods can alter the game for the better as well, making it less of a combat slog.

You make it sound as if Fallout, Fallout 2 & Planescape: Torment didn't exist around that time.

Torment was released a year after BG1. As for Fallout, it was most certainly good, but you can't say there weren't wonky design choices. And no, HT, I don't have enough faith in devs today to surpass what Baldur's Gate was at the time. I'm not of the opinion that anything dated gets worse with time, but unfortunately new players are often of that very opinion.
Anywho, my original point. Baldur's Gate is far from dull.

Hmm I should try this, by comparison I find the BG2 engine much preferable to BG (especially the interface) and it would make the ending chapters (especially the doppelgangers in 5) much easier

Just relax and be immerged in the game I'd say.

You can certaintly go right ahead to BG2 but you'll miss part of the picture.

Someone had said BG is like reading a book (whereas DAO is like watching a movie).

I'd definitely get TuTu. The BG1 game engine is just too...primitive, especially with partymember pathfinding (taking a full party of 6 is just begging for grief, really). It's a lot better with TuTu and Widescreen.

I'd go straight into BG II, it's, in my opinion, the better game.

It's not necessary to complete the first game to enjoy the second, but I'd n+1:th the suggestion to install TuTu and play through BG1 using that. It's a bit of a bother to set up all the right mods, but they do increase the quality of the game substantially, and you'll get to experience the complete story.

Thanks for all the posts, I wish I'd remembered to check on this thread sooner. So which mods do you guys recommend? I really want to be able to play this game and I wouldn't feel right abondoning it now.

For Baldur's Gate 1?

BG2 G3 Fixpack

BGT or BG Tutu. Personally I prefer BGT, it allows you to import NPCs halfway properly (though the game still assumes you've played BG1 with the standard party), and makes it easier to have the same mods running for both games (though installation may become a bit more difficult because of that)

BG1 NPC Project (a must)

And depending on your choice of BG1 import (BGT or Tutu), there are several tweakpacks:

Atweaks (for PnP tweaks), G3 Tweaks (miscellaneous and ease-of-use), Rogue Rebalancing (just what it says on the tin) and BGT Tweaks (incompatible with BG Tutu ;) ) are probable the ones you should look at first.

SCS and SCS2 enhance the enemy AI (and make things more difficult generally) but offer also a basic buffing script that you may learn to love. If you don't know your way around Baldur's Gate yet, then even the normal AI will be a challenge though.

The Widescreen mod is maybe the most important mod, allowing you to play the game in something other than 640x480 or 800x600 (there are other resolutions available anyway, but they aren't very stable and anyway if you have a widescreen monitor Baldur's Gate will look funny without this mod)

While having at least one mage in the party (if you play with a party, that is) is almost a requirement even in BG1, it's true that there isn't as much emphasis on magic in BG1 as in BG2 and ToB.
However, backstabbing your way through BG1 as a Fighter/Thief or F/T/M is easier (and more fun) than brute-forcing your way through with a party of only fighter-types (which is really hard actually), or even a more balanced party with a mage and cleric.
The only exception I can think of, is the final battle with Sarevok, which is harder because you can't easily outrun him to re-hide, and Semaj is a real pain in the behind with his insta-death spell.
Still, perfectly doable using Invisibility potions, the invisibility spell and/or the ring of invisibility.

Or more items than that.  I vaguely remember a tweak for everything, or simply loading up Shadow Keeper.  :D

Good memories.
