I've looked around a little for this information but haven't found anything "official".
I have beaten ME1 and made my decisions. I reached level 50 in the first play through. These are the decisions I want to carry over to ME2. I know that there are bonuses for reaching level 50, 59 and 60. I would like to do a fast play through on a harder difficulty to reach level 60 as well as go full on renegade just for fun skipping everything but the main story line. I do not want these decisions to carry over. Plus there are the decisions from optional assignments from my first play through to consider as well.
That being said, here's is what I'm looking for.
I would assume that the last play through would be the one that carries over, but we all know what happens when you assume. Is there an "official" answer to this? I've read that you can choose what "career" to import, but does that mean that one would have to do their "completest type" play through last to make sure that all of your "real" decisions carry over?
Thank you for any help anyone can throw my way.

Each time you complete ME1 a save is created in your ME1 saves. These are named things like Char_01-level-... What you can do with these is copy the ones you want (based on date) into a specific folder, and then choose to import that folder in the mass effect configuration utility. This works on the PC version, I don't know how the Xbox 360 handles saves.

If you choose to play a previous character a second time in ME1, (i.e. play a level 50 over again), the decisions are all blank, and you have to redo everything or the choices will not carry over.
EDIT: It will be like starting a brand new character except it'll start at level 50 and will probably be easier to pick charm/intimidate choices because you'll have points in those lines.

Like Zontral said, each time you complete the game you get a new "endgame" file.
When you finished the game at Lvl 50 you got one of those. When you play through again, you'll get another endgame file at 60 or whatever level you achieve. If you use that lvl 60 file in ME2, the decisions you made in that new one, *not* the lvl 50 one, will carry over. Each new ME1 game is a blank slate.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm going to guess and say this is from personal experience. Is there an "official" link with this information? If not, there really should be. It seems like something I'm sure more than just me would like to know. One more thing then, is there a list of everything that carries over? That could make things a little easier and on my last play through. I could just use it as a script and only do what I need to do.

I'm not aware of an "official" source for this info, and yes, this is from personal experience. But it's from very experienced personal experience, if you know what I mean. When you go do it yourself, I'm sure you'll see the same results.
If you want more info about what carries over, this Mass Effect Wiki entry has a lot of good information.
Edit: Also, when you do a new game+ (i.e. starting a new ME1 game w/ a previously played character) you don't get to choose your class, personal history, or gender. Those aspects are set in stone. Everything else is wiped clean, even your talent point choices, so you can re-allocate the crap-ton that you have first thing when you start your new playthrough.
Of course you can always change your class at the start of ME2, whether you imported an ME1 character or not.

Keep in mind that while there are now pretty complete lists of what matters going from ME1 to ME2, we don't know what variables from ME1 may lie "dormant" in ME2 but then pop back up in ME3.
I believe your talent point choices for Shepard remain. (Though they certainly do reset for squad members.)

Huh, I could've sworn.. well I'm not on my gaming computer right now so I can't test it, but I seem to remember starting a new game and being able to re-allocate Shepard's points. Oh well.

Thanks for the info guys. I've got a pretty good idea of what to expect and I've made my plan of attack.
I've thought of ANOTHER question now though. [Go figure right?] I wonder if some of what carries over is tied to the achievements and not necessarily the play through. Meaning if I get the "Reached Level 60" one, I'd get the bonus for being level 60 even though the save I'd be using my level 50 save. Just curious if anyone's seen anything about that. It could make things even easier.

I believe it's based off your actual level for the level 50 & 60 bonuses.
For the Rich achievement, I believe it will be tagged in all games you play after getting the achievement, so that one works like you're saying. But it's really not hard to reach the threshold credit count anyway.
