If there was a child in the party they wouldn't be able to engage in combat. Restrictions in some markets would prevent that-- Germany, for instance, forbids any violence being done to children on-screen.

Does this mean Baldur's Gate 2 never got to be published in Germany?

No, it means that laws have become stricter in the past decade. Even before that though, the European version of Fallout 2 had children removed (it was handled pretty poorly - you can still hear them talk but their sprites are missing, so they're like ghosts!).

I can't believe this. Violence in action games played by underage girls and boys is totally fine but hey, a bit of skin or even children in RPG games are banned??

Sickens me.

I also wonder how they handled KOTOR in Germany. Mission Vao was 14 years old, and the things you could do to her... Then again, I don't know the definition of "child" in Germany. There are countries in which marriage at age fourteen is perfectly legal, for example.

Keyword here is 'on-screen'  a helpless scream and fade to black, perhaps?  Hawke screaming NOOO!

Funny story, in BG1 there was a child alone in one of the wilderness areas. He'd lost his doggy, you see. classically tragic, a showcase of early storytelling genius. He wanted you to find his little pup, so he gave you a chew toy. It was a bloody skull, I believe. The dog was a beefed-up dire wolf that would follow you if you had the toy in inventory, and rip your throat out if you didn’t. Returning to the boy, he thanked you and then changed into a red-shaded ettin before stepping through a portal to the forsaken hellscape he called home. And we laughed and laughed.

Then we figured, hey, if you attack him, give him the powers and soundset of a demon, but don’t change his form. That’ll be a lesson for the bastards who take a shot at a "boy" and his dog. I lost my doggie once, so screw those jerks! And we laughed and laughed at our murderous offspring.

Then, because of legal and rating considerations in some markets, all children in some builds of the game were set to be invincible. And thereafter, if you attacked yon poor child, He became... something other... a rampaging engine of destruction cloaked in innocent curls, unkillable, who would smell your guilt and seek you like a guided missile of hellfire and hate every time you returned to that area, your only hope was to exit from one side, then return through the opposite for a mad dash to your destination before He would arrive, screaming in his eldritch tongue, scorching the earth with His every step. My Bhaalspawn dumped a lump, I tell you what.

And we laughed and laughed because we were all very tired, and phoned our mothers because we should really have called more often. Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a knock at the door... at this hour? Goodness who could it...

How about a desire demon possessing a little girl. That would get Fox's attention!

Hmm, yes a child could puppy-stare people to death...

Sure having a child would be nice though I wouldn't want the kid to wander around the battlefield. She/he could stay among relatives.

FAble one has a glitch if you are quick there is a small forest where you help the boy and his grandmother you had to save him from a hobb cave. Well if you beat the mission really quick you could kill his grandmother and then him without NPC disapearing or failing the mission, because if you killed the boy in the mission you failed. I think Fable 1 was able to sell in germany, but I'm not fully sure. Even though you could also beat the crap out of the kids in the towns. The creators of fable are just sick. I don't know why I played it so much. hehe! >=D

YEah, Children in RPG games where in Fallout 3 you can play as a little girl and go around the town cutting everyone up? I guess nobody thought that was a bad idea?Posted Image I wonder if Fallout 3 sold in germany too, because it did do really well so if you could be kid in Fallout 3 and cut people up. Why can't you have a child as a companion? Oh yeah, GERMANY! Posted Image
But wait wasn't connor a kid?Posted Image

When I was a young teen when Fallout 1 & 2 came out, the fact that I could kill children in that game never occured to me as... odd... it was a violent dangerous world and it seemed "fine" (not that my character killed 'em on purpose, my Fallout characters always went for the good route... but often enemies would shoot at me in the streets, miss, and hit a child, blowing his head off).

Gaming changed a lot in more ways than just technology from the old days hehe.. in fact, I think I'll install Fallout 2 and pay a visit to new reno to lob grenades at children.... ahh, good times.

That would seem...so out of league for a little kid to have enough potential to upstage your own character.

I'd be lying if I didn't say that the first time I saw a child in Fallout 3... I tried bash his brains in with a sledgehammer :innocent: ... sadly, the children of Fallout 3 are immortal... I blame the ESRB.... it didn't exist back when Fallout 1&2 were released

So are the Legend of Zelda games illegal in Germany? Especially one like Wind Waker, where your toon looks like a three year old. And where he gets the **** knocked out of him. (if you suck, anyway)

I can't stand kids. If given the option to have some brat join the group I will chose the option that forces it to run away or get killed by Hawke.

If a child companion is a requirement, unless certain mandatory missions mandate the use of the child I will never have it in my party.

How does Square-Enix get away with it, then? Doesn't pretty much every FF game have a kid in the party? Are teenagers acceptable?

I'm certainly not a fan of JRPGs, but of the ones I played, they are usually geared more toward light-hearted (often 'wacky') type of play - not the gritty. realistic type of gore splattering fun like you find in DA:O.  So perhaps it's all about context.

Although, I have to say, the whole game rating system seems pretty chaotic and oft illogical to me, at least in some countries.

In Jade Empire there was a little girl who joined your party, technically when it was time to fight the demon took over however.
