I wanna play as a Dalish elf on my next playthrough, but I don't like any of the tattoos.

I tried replacing one with a custom one (the trailer tattoo) but the custom one replaces 4 of the main ones instead of just one. So while one of the tattoos looks ok, 2 are blank (like there isn't a tattoo), and one is a negative of the custom one which makes NPCs look rediculous.

I also read that applying the custom tattoos through the toolset doesn't work on Dalish.

So, how can I put City Elf or custom tattoos on Dalish Elves ?

Tattoo masks are multi-channel. Each channel holds a separate tattoo - up to 4 tattoos per file (RGBA). If you override a vanilla tattoo mask you will be removing up to 4 tattoos. See my various musings on custom face tattoos (here and elsewhere) for further info.



Concerning Dalish tattoos, yes, for some reason they appear to be a special case. Custom presets with custom tattoos work fine with City Elves, but when trying to use these with Dalish heads they revert to their base tattoos:







They retain everything else, including custom diffuse maps (as you can see on the above pic), so you may have to do custom tattoos for Dalish that way. Put your tattoo over a diffuse map, export a custom preset, turn off any tattoos that get added in the character creator.
