It actually kind of annoys me how much extra attention Liara gets over the other ME1 LI'S (man that looks like a car registration number) I mean okay so Liara is the only one who goes after Shepard's body. I get it, you need a squad mater guarenteed to live and Liara can play the role of the 'Love Interest' without having to disclose the gender of said Shepard. Even if that means there is the nasty impression that the game is telling me that I should have picked Liara instead of Ashley (who has now been handed the crappiest deal out of all the characters in game). And yes ultimately Liara is the reason your survived due to giving it to Cerberus, that doesn't suddenly mean that Ashley/Kaiden deserve to be condemned for not being 'loyal'.

If Ashley/Kaiden didn't know about the resurrection plan, didn't know about the Shadow Broker trying to steal Shepard's body, or even that Shepard's body had been recovered in the first place, or even that it could be recovered, and indeed didn't know anything about anything other than that for all extensive purposes Shepard is DEAD... one can hardly blame them for not trying to get Shepard's body back.

The Simple Country Hyper Chicken could get those charges dropped.

As it stands Ashley (my example here) spent two years in grief and emotional hell and suffering after Shepard was gone, praying for him almost every day and desperately trying to move on in her life and never finding someone new to replace him. Sounds like love and devotion to me, just because she didn't magically find out about Shepard's body and zap halfway across the galaxy to sell my corpse to Cerberus doesn't mean she didn't care a whole lot.

Similarly that's the reason why she was so hurt and confused and angry on Horizon, because Shepard suddenly showed up after two years of being supposedly dead, now working for Cerberus. Ashley had been left completely out of the loop. (by the way, does it not seem strange Liara wouldn't let any Shepard LI or former friends KNOW what was happening so it wouldn't come across as an insane surprise?)

.... sorry, I just get really sick of hearing Ashley getting badmouthed for this. Seriously, that's just unfair. Also I mean no disrespect to any Liara fans out there, you have been good to the Ashley/Kaiden fanbase.

Same goes for everyone else, Wrex was probably already at Tutchunka, Garrus would have been back at C-Sec. Both of them would only have heard that Shepard died, Wrex at least was certainly not on board at the time (otherwise he wouldn't have asked 'how's the Normandy?') so if all he heard was that Shepard was dead, that would be it.

Likewise with Garrus.

As for Tali, well obviously returned to the Migrant Fleet after everything was over and she no longer had a Commander. Don't condemn her for that.

In the real world most people would try to accept that Shepard was dead and move on. Yes, Liara did go an extra mile there. Which may imply an extra degree of care and devotion... or stalker instincts maybe but that doesn't mean the others didn't care just as much. It just meant Liara was given the best deal out of all the characters. Still is given she's the only squad mate now in two games who is guaranteed to be alive for the third game.

But still, again, Liara's fine an I suppose she did the right thing. I just can't help feeling bitter that Liara fans get so much and I get so little. Meaning no offense to anyone else of course.

Liara didn't get more attention because she was a love interest. She has had an important role ME plot wise from the start, LI or not. Her mother was involved with Saren in ME1, in the comics she rescues Shepard's body, and in ME2 she becomes the SB.

I'm saying this from the perspective of a person who really dislikes Liara and wishes she behaved very differently. The writers have planned her to be an important character from the start, whether she's liked or not. The LI is just an additional choice for the player.

There has to be some stable character that goes with the plot. Everyone at this point can die but her, but the consequence is the fact everyone is detached from the overall plot. They are all sidekicks that help you and can easily be replaced. Liara can not be replaced because of her footing in the plot.

I feel that Liara, being so naive, tried to find hope the Shepard was alive somewhere. In this case, it paid off. For example, if someone you know died, like in a plane crash, would you rather look for them only to turn up with a dead body? I wouldn't, because I feel like that will hurt more. The other characters were more mature than her. She was still a kid who was clinging on to hope.

I don't know about that. In the digital comic dark horse came out with, she seemed to be fully aware ahead of time that Shepard was dead. It kinda bothers me that everyone sees her as this kind. I kind of see her as the most mature person of the LIs in mass effect 1.

Eh. Liara's obsessed.

That's not exactly a point for her in my books. It just makes her creepy and gives my Shep the desire to find a restraining order.

I'm of the stance that Liara's was a case of denial more than anything else. But as other's said, it's unfair to say Liara loves Shepard more than anyone else when she was the only one who didn't have any obligations.

Well, I'm fairly certain she cares more about my Shepard than anyone else does, given that she's my LI. For other Shepards, who knows? But she may well be second most after whoever their LI was.

She cares. Like a stalker!

A cute, blue, sweet stalker. But a stalker nevertheless.

I can agree when you put it that way.

Seemed to me that Liara was more concerned about Shepard's body not falling into the wrong hands than having it to herself or anything (creepy) like that.

But I will say that she seemed deeply in love with Shep no matter who s-/he ended up with.

That's correct. When she started hunting for Shepard's body, she didn't know Cerberus was going to try to resurrect him. She only knew the Collectors were going to take his corpse, and she wanted to stop them, to prevent them from doing whatever they were going to do with it. Cerberus said they wanted the body as well, but didn't go into the details till after she obtained it.

And to make some people sleep at night: From what the symposis in the comic suggest, Liara wasn't the only friend looking for Commander Shepard. She was simply the one that found him.

Yeah, if she was creepy obsessed she would have kept the body for herself.

Possibly, but there's nothing wrong or 'creepy' about unrequited love.

Of course not. It was just in response to some things I'd read browsing the thread.

Unrequieted love is the kind I'm most familiar with, myself. :P

This whole discussion on Liara's personality is quite interesting, but the "most caring" issue to me seems a bit... simple. It's like saying that my aunt cared for my grandmother the most because she cried so hard at her funeral, while my mother stayed silent. Maybe they just have different ways of living and showing their feelings; which is one of the things I love in ME2, how each former team member deals with Shepard's death in his/her own way. To me it adds a realistic touch of individuality to the characters, making them react differently to the loss of a loved one.

That said, I agree with V-Rex and Lucky Thirteen in the fact of Liara being the one recovering Shep's body due to her playing a key role in the whole ME story; which has been reinforced by what we've seen in LotSB. Also, through ME I felt somewhat "pushed" to romance her. To me, she's the obvious default LI; this impression is once again reinforced in LotSB as it's very rewarding to players that romanced Liara.

Personally I never liked Liara, but I don't think her strong presence in Shepard's story is due either to eternal love or creepy personality. Merely, as I said, to her being given a major role in the whole story by BW.

my thoughts on the topic:

tali and garrus rejoined shep after 2 years without much thought,
mind you i guess they were both stuck in odder situations.

while garrus didn't have much to go back too, tali did have the fleet which is important to her, considering how much she talks about it.

and then there is liara,
who was too wrapped up in a personal vendetta.
she only comes onto the normandy after you help her take out the shadow broker.

therefore, tali and garrus care more imo.

Out of the NPC returns (Wrex, Ash/Kaidan and Liara), Liara was definately the most caring. Even without the DLC she still showed a strange obsession with you, and then there's the events of ME: Redemption reinforcing this.

Wrex was a better friend, but he wasn't exactly rushing to dig up your dog tags. He's a busy krogan. As for Ash/Kaidan....well....I hope they have a better return for ME3.

I still think Garrus and Tali are more caring than all of them though.

Actually, Tali didn't join you at first because she had a mission that was too important, even for Shepard. She only joined after the mission was finished. Same with Liara not dropping her quest to save her friend from death to join Shepard, except being the Shadow Broker is more important for Shepard then simply joining him.

Liara is the Epic romance for Shepard. I did LotSB with a MaleShep that I was romancing Tali with, and I fought every urge to use the Paragon interrupts throughout the missions to see what happens. In the end, even if you just want to be friends with her, she mentions that perhaps in the future it might be an option to get back together.

Interesting points, and this quoted one is one that I was a long-time believer in (like if they do a movie...) but if you play ME2 with no imported game, there is no LI and the VS is simply the opposite gender.

Now there is all of the things in LoTSB, like the dog tags she gives to Shep, why did she have them if not to care so much?

I just wanted to point out that Hackett gave her the tags to give to Shepard. She was a courier, basically. For the tags, at least. (And, to be honest, it's Hackett's level of loyalty and caring that I'd treasure more than Liara's attachment. What? Me? Biased? Pffff.)

Otherwise? Yeah, she cares for Shepard, but there is a line where caring for Shepard turns into being unhealthily attached to someone. I don't much care for friendships based solely on someone "meant" to be their friend, clinging to pieces of them (small things, sure, but... pieces of Shepard's old armor in her apartment? Kiiinda creepy. And macabre, but mostly creepy.) even two years after they've died. I'd understand (sort of) if Shepard was a lover and not just their CO for a few weeks/months.

This depends for me based on these factors:

- If you're solely talking about how the females rank in my Shepard's life, then yes, Liara comes second (she's like a sister to my Shep).

- If you're including ALL of Shepard's allies, then she comes third, behind Garrus.

EDIT: I can understand where Calla is coming from with the argument about how Liara had Shepard's old armor on display in her apartment can be seen as "creepy".  However, as JediMB also states, she goes to such "stalkerish" lenghts to keep Shepard's body out of Collector hands.  Can she be stalkerish and creepy?  Sure....but so can any character if you want to really scrutinize and analyze any character out there.

Don't forget that Wrex was happiest to see you out of all the other crew mates when you first reunite with them in ME2. Not saying anyone cares more than the other, just throwing that out there.

Even if your mean to her, you did save her from Geth and fight a Krogan Battlemaster. It could be argued that your Shepard only did that for the mission's sake, but after saving her life she's going to take it personally. Thats going to inspire a certain amount of loyalty, whatever the rest of the conversations (or lack of) you have with her in the first game.

I do like her as a character though, so it might be a biased defense. ^_^

There are a lot of things that come out in the game that weigh heavily in what you are saying and no matter how Bioware tries to make it out to seem... (Whether she was an LI or not) I'm sorry... I don't buy someone who was just a good friend doing the things she did.

Listen... they had a month together before the Collector attack. Does anyone think for an instant that they did not continue to explore what they obviously discovered. That they did not meld more than that one time in-game? No matter how you cut it... whether you romanced her or not... Liara was deeply in love with Shepard. Period. The line "I couldn't let you go" is all the proof you need.

I've said Bioware could have an epic romance here... along the lines of the one they started but didn't d*mn finish with Revan and Bastila. I was very skeptical after ME2 came out that they had not destroyed the Shepard/Liara romance. After LofSB Bioware has reestablish my faith in them. They can truly turn this into an epic romance for the ages considering how the LotSB ended. That is what I am hoping for and I will be very upset if it doesn't happen.

Of course... I'll just use my fanfiction to make sure it does happen. lol!

110% argeement with this .... well except for the fanfic bit coz i'm lazy and talentless Image IPB
