Personally, I'm not romancing any ME2 characters for both roleplaying and metagaming reasons, and I found that the game was more lonely, but it made a lot more sense to me. The game was much "deeper" when my Shepard felt alone and isolated on a Cerberus ship she didn't want to be on, didn't have anyone waiting for her after the suicide mission, and the future seems bleak and uncertain with no clear sense of what will come next. Would I have preferred a "happy ending" if it were offered in the first place? Sure, but now that I've played through the whole game this way several times, it makes the most sense, given the plot.

Now this is EXACTLY how I play ME2 with my primary Shepard (male, loyal to Ashley), and I agree. ^_^

Thane's romance isn't really more optimistic and for me personally it's even worse than stying loyal to ME1 LI, especially after his dossier and letter in LotSB. But it's just me, of course

That makes two of us.

In my opinion, just because a story has the potential to break your heart at the end doesn't make it any less appealing. In fact, the sense of tragedy is part of the reason I love Thane's romance. But that's not saying I want to lose Thane.

Nope, not just you.  At least with Kaidan, you get a spark of hope from his e-mail (if you choose to view it that way).   And the pre-SM picture gazing, to me, portrays a more optimistic Shepard.

I thought Shepard was pretty sad and lonely in the picture scene.  And I'm not staying faithful simply to torture my character, but I don't think finding happiness or contentment is appropriate to what the writers were attempting to convey in ME2.  I'd be pretty annoyed if a happy ending in ME3 were not possible, but I think at this point Shepard shouldn't feel like patting herself on the back.  The last scene in ME2 tries to bring this home, but I do feel like plenty of people feel like their characters got everything they could hope for by the end of the game:  a cool ship, a love interest at their beck and call, a crew of loyal squadmates, and even a space hamster and fishies.  But I have a feeling that a lot of that stuff will be taken away in the beginning of ME3, if not all of it, in one way or another, in order to have a clean slate the way they did with ME2.

After telling off TIM my character is taking nothing for granted -- with neither Cerberus nor the Alliance at her back, she's in a very precarious position when her goal is trying to defeat the Reapers.  This really isn't the time for her to start a new relationship, even if she was interested.  Befriending Kelly to the point of getting her to feed her fish was as much emotional attachment as she could handle right now.

yes, Shepard is sad and lonely in a picture scene. but that's because she was probably going to die in the next few hours. i still view this scene as being hopeful and remembering that you have something to return to, so my loyal endings all seemed not-so-dark to me

with Thane, on the other hand, you kind of know that 'happiness' will be taken from you very soon, so i don't think the 'their characters got everything they could hope for'argument really works here. not for me. it's pretty much doomed and desperate situation, and not much to look forward to. so all in all Thane's romance is the darkest one in the games, though not necessarily the deepest

@ Collider--sorry about that.
@FieryPhoenix7--sorry I missed that from the OP as well.
But I do think you have a point about the romance. From what I've seen from Jacob's romance (dialogue wise and stuff--no offense to Jacob lovers) and Garrus' too, is that they are more like flings. Heck, with Garrus, it's about blowing off steam, not about love or anything (originally). Thane's romance develops quickly (that's more to blame with the nature of ME2, however), but it's based on eventual mutual love, methinks.

If there's one thing the romance with Garrus is not, it's a "blowing off steam" fling.  At the VERY beginning, sure...as in when those words are said...but it becomes far more apparent as you go along with the romance that it's more than that.  LotSB helped cement that.

I won't turn this into a Garrus discussion since the OP'er wants to focus on Thane, but a lot of us have discussed this pretty in-depth over on the Garrus thread. ;)

That's why I said originally.
I'm saying with the others it seems more about blowing off steam at first. Haven't done the Jacob one fully through, but I loved Garrus' because he's absolutely terrified and wants something to go right, and to me that conveys a deep caring for Shepard.

I'm just saying Thane's doesn't start out as a fling.

And forgive me, but for some reason I saw, "Why Thane's Romance is the Deepest in ME2." Maybe that's because I was in class as I was typing my replies. And although I think you have a point, but I guess that depends on the playthrough. Were my non-romanced FemShep from ME1 to romance Thane, then I guess it could be considered deep in that they both find love through the tragedy. If I used my FemShep who romanced Kaidan, then it lessens that emotional/romantic impact.
I haven't romanced Ashley yet, but I've romanced Kaidan and Garrus and Liara, and I must say Kaidan's has an awesome development, and I guess Ashley's could go the same route. To me, feelings start developing between Kaidan/Ashley and Shepard after Eden Prime, when Shepard saves whoever from the beacon. And it develops through all the way to the end. And then Horizon, and then the email, are all emotionally charged. And the picture scene before Shepard goes through the Omega 4 relay is poignant.

Shepard's magical genitalia should not be the only way to "save" Jack or Thane from their pathos.

....why is this quote so awesome?

To be honest ...I think all the relationships in the game bar "tali, liaria, ash/kaiden, garrus" are too quick to be considered deep.. all the rest are just... "deeply troubling"... I think it's more of a case of lonely people getting together rather than anything deep...or meaningful...

they are all faced with death, and are despertly scrambling for one last ditch fumble in the dark before they bite the big one.

Mind you the romances in ME 1 were too quick too.... it would have been nice if they had built over the course of all three games...

I thought this was well worded and everything I never thought to say. I tried Garrus once, never thought about Jacob (his mouth is almost half his face), and have stayed with Thane ever since. I've always wondered why only the human romances get more than a kiss and forehead touch. Any thoughts? I'm sure it's been discussed, but New Zealand "broadband" sucks.

I hope we can cure him. Dying of a disease just...well...seems like an insult after fighting the collectors.

Anyways, yes, well thought out and just awesome!

and Hainkpe, that vid is dead.
