This is off the present discussions a bit, but, I simply wanted to give a Big Thanks to the Devs, Gaider and all the Writers in the Pitt for giving the Universe of Thedas, i.e. Dragon Age, Mages. When DAO was first announced, and mention was made that the game would be heavily inspired by the works of R.R. Martin and his Song of Ice and Fire series, I was just a "bit" dissapointed at the idea that Thedas would not have any real "Magic," which, for me at least, has always been a corner-stone of High/Dark Fantasy. In Martin's series there is some evidence that Arcane/Dark Magic exsists in the form of certain characters, one in particular; however, it's still almost a Myth, though it's hinted strongly that this will change in a Big way as the series continues. (Pause) If it ever does.
Thankfully, with DAO we recieved Mages which were not only an intregal part of the Lore, Society, and Religion (some even think Andraste was just a "Neo" like Mage) but who played in a varied and complex way. Often, in Fantasy, Wizards/Mages are often relegated to support Roles. However, in DAO, one could take the charge and be center stage in the action. My "Avatar-like" (The show, not the film) Mage is always in the lead, laying down Elemental Power that can clear whole swaths of Darkspawn and other assorted Badies. However, when I first started playing, I was concerned that I would just be the standard at the back "Pew-Pew" spell-caster. But, by Level Ten? Great Cesar's ghost was I blown away.
Hopefully, the Uber-Nature of well put together Mages will not be lessened in Dragon Age. I understand *some* players did not like the fact that by End Game a well designed Mage almost at the Technical Cap could basically beat the game Solo. I, however, found that to be one of the best aspects. We are supposed to be the Hero of Fereldan and the Greatest Grey Warden since Garahel (spelling?) several hundred years before. It would be kind of hard to feel that way if a small group of Darkspawn or a couple of Archers could lay us down without a bunch of Tanks and Healers between us and them.
So, in closing, words can not begin to describe how much I appreciate what the writers/devs have done for those of us who love cold, hard, face-melting Magic. Now, all we need is for the Art Team to stop making us look like Cross-Dressers and everything is Solid Gold.
