It's not better or worst, just different style. Some mages are even half warriors. Some mages are shapeshifters and so on..simfamSP wrote...

I understand what you mean. But do you understand that no every mages need stick to defenced them self. It's not needed because some mages are NEVER in situation where it would be needed. Some other mage may even be often that kind situation, but it's all about how you play your mage.
Yup, well I suck at being a mage, so I would very much life a stick to stick it up some Darkspawn's arse when I play my apostate Hawke <3

Why not a more practical weapon like a sword?

Do the Tevinter Mages have to go tru a Harrowing, or something simmelair as well? Does anyone know?
From what I can tell reading the lore, yes. Magi still need to prove that they can resist possession to be a part of the Tevinter Circle, the Circle simply is the ruling political force in Tevinter.

Yes, I would love to see a sword and a staff combo...I'm sure Lumikki won't need it since his/her mages are like chuck norris

No, I'm not joking. You can make choises, but you can't make choises agaist story what Bioware has writen. Example if Bioware "force" you play apostate mage (Hawke or sister) agaist Chantry in story, you can't do anything agaist it, even how you would want play differently.Riona45 wrote...

Yes, Hawke's father was an apostate mage, and tutored Bethany (and Hawke if he/she is a mage) in magic. So, that would make them both apostate mages. I my self don't really like this, because it cause problems with Chantry and knowing Biowares way to create stories, they will force the issue agaist players options. Meaning player has only one way to react to situation, because story is set to so that player will be Apostate and have to behave that way.AbsolutGrndZer0 wrote...
So, if your Hawke is a mage, I assume you will be an apostate, like your sister is?
You must be joking. More often than not, you have a choice of how to react in Bioware's games.
I disagree. In DA:O, Leliana and Morrigan couldn't be any more different, especially in terms of their view on the Chantry, and even Alistair, who nearly became a templar, didn't seem to happy about the actions of the Chantry in terms of the Harrowing and the lyrium addiction that the templars face. The Warden could either be pro or anti-Chantry, especially when it came to the Urn of Sacred Ashes. Why assume that because one character may likely be anti-Chantry, that it forces your character into the same position?

also don't forget that DAO forced you to play as a circle tower mage. I would have happily picked the chance to be a hedge mage if the origin was available. Now that "origin" is availible

If you look you can see her shoot a spirit bolt and it takes out all but the feet of a darkspawn also the fireball exploded a group of darkspawn. This is an improvement on DAO where they just fell down dead after killing them with magic.tool_bot wrote...

Rewatched it and am still feeling underwhelmed by the mages. Especially in contrast to Hawke who's rushing at enemies and blowing thru them.

Well, the mage is controlled mainly by AI and hardly used any AoE spells.

One little video and you feel underwhelmed? Perhaps whoever was at the controller wanted to blow through all the enemies without Bethany's help.
