One little video and you feel underwhelmed?  Perhaps whoever was at the controller wanted to blow through all the enemies without Bethany's help.

I know, and that's probably it. It was meant to show off the warrior Hawke so obviously that's going to be the focus.  It's just we've been hearing about mages being improved, and then I see one in action and it doesn't look all that better to me.

I thought it was pretty impressive... she was knocking them down like bowling pins.

She did spend most of it just pew pewing, not the most impressive demonstration of a mage's abilities possible.

So, if your Hawke is a mage, I assume you will be an apostate, like your sister is?

Yes, Hawke's father was an apostate mage, and tutored Bethany (and Hawke if he/she is a mage) in magic. So, that would make them both apostate mages. I my self don't really like this, because it cause problems with Chantry and knowing Biowares way to create stories, they will force the issue agaist players options. Meaning player has only one way to react to situation, because story is set to so that player will be Apostate and have to behave that way.

You must be joking.  More often than not, you have a choice of how to react in Bioware's games.

No, I'm not joking. You can make choises, but you can't make choises agaist story what Bioware has writen. Example if Bioware "force" you play apostate mage (Hawke or sister) agaist Chantry in story, you can't do anything agaist it, even how you would want play differently.

I disagree. In DA:O, Leliana and Morrigan couldn't be any more different, especially in terms of their view on the Chantry, and even Alistair, who nearly became a templar, didn't seem to happy about the actions of the Chantry in terms of the Harrowing and the lyrium addiction that the templars face. The Warden could either be pro or anti-Chantry, especially when it came to the Urn of Sacred Ashes. Why assume that because one character may likely be anti-Chantry, that it forces your character into the same position?

also don't forget that DAO forced you to play as a circle tower mage. I would have happily picked the chance to be a hedge mage if the origin was available. Now that "origin" is availableImage IPB

Not only that, maybe Hawke will have the opportunity to gain a leadership position and emancipate the Circles of Magi in the Free Marches (if they're all city-states, I'd imagine there is likely one in each city-state), and lead the mages to freedom.

Indeed, I'm sure when Mage!Hawke gets "unlocked" we'll get to see more of mage spells in action.

I liked what I saw in the gameplay video. Sure, we didn't see Bethany much, but it still looked nice. Spirit Bolt looks cool (I'm guessing that's the equivalent of Arcane Bolt). Fireball was impressive too, although it looks like the radius has been toned down quite a bit. Even her normal attacks look better. Also, I think we get to see the wave of fire finisher which I believe is a melee mage finisher just off the screen.

I think fireball is one of the spells which will have upgrades. So it may start smaller than in DAO but we can then add in effects.

Image IPBImage IPBI agree.  I was just surprised it wasn't upgraded since she was being exaggerated by Varric.

about the robes, I'd like some all-black or gray ones with hoods covering most of our faces, flowing just everywhere. make our eyes glow with casting. I loved it when morrigan beat 'em up with her staff. I love her clothes too. very cool. i'd also like some skin-showing clothing for male mages as well as armor-ish robes.

I really like everyone's ideas :]

Well the problem with Varric exaggerating Bethany is that he doesn't actually know her class because he is always distracted when he thinks of her Image IPB

bit of an update on news about one of the Staffs

Image IPB
Image IPB
Magic has always run strongly within the Hawke bloodline. The tales passed down from one generation to the next tell of an ancestor named Parthalan, a mage who long ago helped to unite Ferelden under the rule of King Calenhad. Parthalan eventually vanished into legend, fleeing the persecution of the Chantry, but his legacy remains in the hands of his family - along with his hope that one day, mages would achieve the freedom that King Calenhad intended to bring to all men.

I've said this already in another thread, but I think the history on that item is super-cool, especially since I intend to play a mage.

I love playing mages, in my 2nd playthrough the demo yesterday at the Eurogamer Expo I spent most of the time playing Bethany. Thinking back on it, I think the thing that I enjoyed the most was the new default attack animations. Definitely alot more detail in them this time. When launching bolts from her staff she switched from left to right which looked great in combat. The fire slam attack was another highlight.

Not that this is a bad thing, but it feels like the storyline of DA2 is pretty mage-heavy. Hawke's family has a magical heirloom, Bethany is a mage, daddy Hawke was a mage, there's the whole schtick with the templars in Kirkwall, etc. It feels like that mage arc will hit home harder for a mage Hawke than for one who's a warrior or rogue.

Of course, I always play mages, but I do wonder about the other classes. Do they get some magic-light abilities? Is their mage arc bit going to tie in with Bethany instead of the PC?
