call me stupid, but wouldnt it be logical for a mage to use his staff as a fighting staff to deflect an attack when an enemy is close and swinging a sword at him?
Not at all stupid. The animation department's time and money budget might be taxed by actual deflection and parrying, sadly.
Right after a parry, I'd like to see a bolt of lighting throw your target into the nearest wall.

Oh, right - the mage who blasted your PC into next year. Where he's still complaining about DA:2.

My hopes are the same as others: AW to still be a spec, better robes, hoods and the sword staff weapon.

I'm planning on making my mage specialize in Lightning based spells ( and telekinetic and mind control spells, if they are in DA2 ). I like the idea that electricity can now stun enemies.
So, what I'd like to be able to do is shock my enemies with a lightning blast, stun them, then go in for the kill with my staff melee attacks......
Oh.......and please, no more having to sheathe your weapon to cast spells business.........

I am hoping for some awesome and visually distinctive robes and maybe even some non-robe types of cloth armor. Fingers crossed for better hats as well.

yes, I'm really looking forward to this scenario.
i also hope that the fact that mage Hawke is an apostate ( along with Bethany ) will affect how other characters will react to you.
Like others will regard you with extra suspicion and hostility, especially the Templars in Kirkwall.........

yay!! we get our own mage appreciation thread!!!
I like combat/melee oriented mages ( Arcane Warrior ftw ). So, in DA2, I would like:
1. More Robe variety, and ARMORED ROBES. In origins, only Templars got armored robes, but they looked a little bulky. Duncan had a sleeker armored robe, but it was only available to Duncan.
Trailer Hawke sort of had an armored robe, but his armor was cool nonetheless, and I want that too!
2. The staff/sword from the trailer and promo art. And, I want a good variety of staff/swords.
3. Cool staff melee attack animations. Both regular attacks and special "spell attacks." Also, cool staff/sword deathblows!!
4. Some kind of hood or cowl, like concept art of Morrigan wears........
Good ideas

Me too! On my first playthrough in every RPG I allways play as a warrior/soldier etc. But it seems to me that the mage class fits Hawke better. And my canon Warden was a Warrior, so I like the change.

I plan to play a mage first because they are my favorite class in every game. I'm really looking forward to upgrading spells. I think this will make us feel like more specialized mages and I'm excited for mage finishing moves.....my mage was a little jealous of Alistair in DAO.....
Seconded! They should have had mage finishing moves in the first place but I'm glad we're getting them now. I'm also glad we get to play apostate mages.
Obviously I want a nicer variety of equipment. I've mentioned this many times before.

Good. It'll be interesting. And there's nothing like the smell of burned templar flesh in the morning.

We mages hate Templars, don't we? Self-righteous, persecuting buffoons! Roast in your metal armour while we rain down meteors and lightning bolts! Etc.
In fact, I'd like a spell: Fry Templar.

To be fair, I kind off agree with Wynne on this one. They serve a function and if they didn't exist there would probably be a problem. As bad as mages have it, if they didn't have towers, a lot of them would be lynched by their neighbors. Not to mention there's the risk of possession. What I don't like is how I'm (i'm projecting myself into my character) labeled as evil and they tend to assume you're a maleficar. It definately is not an "innocent until proven guilty" stystem. More like a "you are assumed guilty if the templars/chantry suspect even the slightest thing about you and you have no rights".

Yes, this is true - there are lot of ignorant, suspicious types in Thedas, ready to murder over sour milk. And it's certainly true there are evil mages. Evil, possessed mages, too.
However, I don't think the Templars are necessary to provide protection. A cabal of mages is enough, although the cabal in Tevinter seems oppressive, domineering, and possibly evil. Still, it doesn't follow that a group of mages would automatically be evil. Tempted by their power, perhaps. But not necessarily evil or aggressive.
As you say (in so many words), the unreasonable prejudice is exactly that. So is the leash and collar, figuratively and literally in the case of the Qunari. In fact, I believe any mage is justified in rejecting and resisting their oppression, save for the abominations - but that's no longer a matter of oppression, but self-defense by the common people.
