I don't see why Arcane Warrior can't still be in the game. Who's to say there's not another AW out there in Thedas ( outside of Ferelden )??

And, as I said, maybe AW won't = sword wielding mage anymore, but it could at least mean a mage that is highly proficient in staff melee combat.

after all, the initial impression of trailer Hawke was that he was an AW, given the way he combined both melee fighting and spell casting.

If mages by default can melee fight like trailer Hawke then that would be great!

But, if not, then there is no reason why mage Hawke couldn't lean to fight like that throuh an AW spec.

And it would still keep the classes distinct because staff fighting is a different fighting style than DW and archery ( for Rogues ) and Sword + Shield and 2h ( for Warriors ).

Urm. If they come up with a new melee-mage spec like the one you're suggesting, I'd rather they came up with a new name for it too rather than arbitrarily altering the lore because you like the sound of "Arcane Warrior". Hell, what you're talking about seems much more akin to an evolution of Battlemage... which, as a term, has a much wider scope than AW (mage that is trained to wade into the midst of battle, basically) as well as them being much more common in Thedas.

well, quite frankly, I don't care what they call it.  They could call it something else, as long as I can get a melee-oriented warrior/battle mage.

Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Since mages don't have a staff weapon talent tree ( but do have spell talents that use the staff ), I'm hoping that there will be at least one spec ( Arcane Warrior/Battle Mage type ) that will let your mage learn more staff melee attacks.

For example, mages could have a radial/AOE attack where they spin their staff over their heads and attack/knock down surrounding enemies.

Or maybe there's a stun/knock back attack ( like Shield Bash ) where the mage uses the bottom/blunt end to quickly stike an opponent and stun him.

I mean, there's a whole bunch of moves Mages could do with their staves.

It would be a huge waste of opportunity if Mages can only do basic staff melee attacks, while the other classes get more variety of attacks through their weapon talent trees....

For regular mages, I wouldn't mind if all they could do was basic attack.

But that's what specs are for, they let you.....umm.......specialize!!

so I'm really hoping that there will be an AW/Battle Mage type of spec that really lets you specialize in melee fighting with your staff.

Not all of us mage players want to play as strict spell casters or as weak, fragile fighters who can't take a hit.

For those of us who want our mages to join our fellow warriors and rogues in the midst of melee combat, please give us a spec to do so.......

For the arcane warrior/battle mage spec:

When you take the spec it give you the choice for fighting style. Then every level up you can either choose spell or fighting style tree.

Like if you choose staff you get staff tree that normal mages do not get. IF you go 2 weapon you get the 2 weapon tree, sword and shield gets that tree, etc. You would not get the base skill trees from the fighter/rogue, but just the weapon style ones.

U assume here that mages will have a "staff" talent tree. This has NOT been confirmed. IIRC there wont be any kind of staff tree for the default mage. He can equip em as the only characterclass, the staffs are mage only, but thats it with staffs. But that does NOT imply that there also will be a whole talent tree for staff fighting.

The only, and in my mind more likely possiblity, is that the arcan warrior specialization will have talents that improve meleefighting with an staffweapon.

Seeing as Arcane Warrior wackiness was pretty much my favorite part of DA:O and Awakening? Yeah, I definitely want the ability to get close and personal with the enemy using something sharp and pointy, and wearing something very much like the trailer armor Hawke was wearing.

I just don't have the will to play a mage. I do however like splitting their noggins with a very sharp blade. /carry on

one thing I'd like to see is some kind of spell or talent or ability that lets your mage do spirit damage with his/her staff.

Templars had an ability that caused this effect against mages, and I believe Spirit Warriors could do it too against all enemies.

I liked the spirit damage effect, so I'd think it would be cool if our staves could have that too......

Damn! I was going to start this thread...

Mage's were by far the deadliest class in DA:O, and maybe even the best. Arcane Warriors were better warriors than warriors. ;)

Hmm. I think I just might make some mage banners...
