Damn! I was going to start this thread...
Mage's were by far the deadliest class in DA:O, and maybe even the best. Arcane Warriors were better warriors than warriors. ;)

Hmm. I think I just might make some mage banners...

Every time I replayed the game i told myself no mages I usually ended up with 3 on my team plus another skeleton mage :D

Yeah I know what you mean. The only problem is that I can't stand bringing Morrigan with me; She usually stays at camp. What's this skeleton mage you speak of? Image IPB

The animate dead spell, bring a dead enemy to live, so i usually wait for a mage :wizard:

Oh, that! I much prefer the blood control spell; but that's probably because I'm a blood mage kind of guy.

Share the love for the Staff wielders

My first character in any RPG is always a mage.

What are you hoping for the Mage class in DA2?

One thing I absolutely was not hoping for was the mandatory staves.  I'vm realyl upset about that.

Especially since there was a quantifiable mechanical benefit from not using one in DAO, so if I developed that habit of not using a staff because it simply wasn't a good idea, now I'm forced to use a staff.

What changes from the Origins equipment would you like?

I'd like to see more bonuses on equipment that are counter-intuitive.  Give us melee weapons with +Magic bonuses or staves with +Strength bonuses.

Yes, I realise that these desires are rendered moot by what we've learned about equipping weapons, but that doesn't change the desires.

What are you most looking forward to seeing in DA2?

At this point?  Mods.

Bring on the finishing moves.

I particularly want to turn those off.  I found them disruptive in DAO, and would rather avoid them in DA2.

If they are less disruptive, I'm looking forward to them, but this is not a featuer that has been mentioned in the marketing or by the developers.

I hope that arcane warrios (if there's is such a specialisation in DA2) don't have to unequip the sword when casting spells.

I am going to play as a mage Hawke first.

Hawke is actually both a warrior and a mage because his weapon is a staff and sword combined plus he knows blood magic ( I know he's EVIL ) my origins templar champion would kill him . I would holy smite him and then overpower him take his weapon break it and then finish him off with a decapitation!! Image IPBImage IPB

I don't even want to see robes outside of the chantry and circle, I hope all robes we wear in game are similar to hawkes robes and morrigans in style, and no gay ass hats

Bioware said hawke was just a plain old blood Mage, not some warrior Mage hybrid (Arcane warior, which lore wise probably shouldn't be involved anyway) and his weapon is one of the new style staffs, a cross between melée and magic, also his armor is in game for mages too! Hope all our Mage stuf is as cool as his.

From what i heard characters in DA 2 can use cross class skills, it would be cool with a mage who also would be proficient with two hand swords.

I'm hoping for mage hats, that don't look ridiculous.

There better be hats that don't look ridiculous.

I'm looking forward to the new hats, that don't look ridiculous.

:D

No seriously, since all my characters but one were mages, I hope mages get some nice new spells and abilities and perhaps some spells that aren't only combat spells.

Yeah, I saw this, I haven't seen the new hats, though, so there still is doubt. :D

I was pretty happy with the mage in DAO, but they've gotten rid of the pew pew laser and that makes me happy. Hopefully, the awful hats, too.

One thing I would like, if they're taking pointers from Mass Effect..let my mage use his powers occasionally to intimidate someone. I know it's really minor, but being able to occasionally remind someone stubborn that I can shoot lightning, summon fire, or the like would be nice.

What would also be interesting to see, though I doubt it will come up in Dragon Age 2, are books of spells. We learn in Origins that mages are born with talent but need to study in order to harness it. This also comes up in dialogue with Flemeth and later in Morrigan's personal quest. Unfortunately there is no sense of discovery in the game because every spell is available to us with an expenditure of talent points. It would be neat if we had to find rare or forgotten spells, or some spells were only available as quest rewards or if you impressed a certain character.

My greatest hope for DA2 is a generalist specialization. DA:O's specializations were too limiting. I could choose from two magic/melee hybrids, healing, or evil magic. A specialization such as "Archmage" that makes your mage better at what they already do, without locking you into a playstyle or archetype would be nice.

I would cite hats, but the devs confirmed those gnome hats would go. I would like prettier robes. The redesigned circle robe Bethany wore in early screen shots look promising. I also think clothes shape should be consistent enough that we don't see sudden and illogical body shape changes as was evident with the Chasind Robe. Mainly I want prettier robes though. Some dresses wouldn't be bad either. I'm not fond of hodge podge outfits like the first game's Tevinter and Chasind outfits.

Fewer lyrium potions and more specialization specific items would be nice too.

It's too early to say. Nothing jumps out at me based on the information we have.

I think that he just got confused with cross-class combos. I think it's confirmed that mages can only use staffs and maybe that staff-sword thing from the trailer.

Back on topic, seems like everyone is in consensus that the DAO "hats" need to die. Good lord, they were so horrible that I made sure that most of my mages were Arcane Warriors so that I could wear something decent. Also, furry/feathery shoulders should not come back, ever.

My goodness, where to begin? Well, I suppose I'll start off by saying that in every game of this type, I play a mage or similar caster 99.9% of the time. So I freaking LOVE mages. What am I excited about? Well, here we go. Most of this is from Peter Thomas' thread, but not all.

1.) Better robes.
2.) Cool spells, both old and new. I realize some have been cut, but I think that there were a lot that could have been eliminated and/or consolidated into other spells since we have the upgrade system now.
3.) I'm psyched for better differentiation between the elemental categories of spells. According to Thomas, Fire deals the most damage over the widest area, Cold slows and stops enemies over the smallest area with shorter range, Earth has high impact strength, and lightning deals moderate damage over areas (though not as big as fire), ignores friendly fire, is very fast, and has the potential to stun. I'm excited about this because in Origins all of the primal spells felt very repetitive to me.
4.) Mages can now attack at melee range with their basic attack, which makes more sense to me. It should be noted in case anyone missed it, that this is the same damage as their pew pew pew attack (though that is now a bit different I believe). So they still aren't warriors.
5.) Mages have finishing moves.
6.) They still have healing and CC abilities, though we don't know to what extent (I'm not worried).
7.) Spells will no longer overlap as much as they did in Origins; they are more unique to themselves.
8.) Spells can be upgraded, allowing you to increase the effectiveness of certain spells that you like. They're trying to make this roughly equivalent to getting a brand new ability (a made-up example he used was upgrading a single-target spell so that it explodes and damages nearby enemies instead of just one).
9.) Animations. We received an example from Thomas about a mage slamming her staff into the ground as a finisher and sending a wave of fire into an enemy or something like that. He also stated that as far as what they do to cast and stuff is much more visually interesting and I'm really excited. There were really only (with the staff equipped) three different animations in Origins.

Staffs with blades attatched would be cool as would some "spells" that allow the mage to do some physical attacks for example using the staff to sweep an enemies feet to knock him down or driving the staff in the enemies private area to stun him. The basic things would be nice.

No Spec is certain for now. We'll have to wait for some big announcement, I guess.

Not much to say. I play allmost allways mage, because it's about range and most flexiable class to play. How ever, I never use single melee attack with staff, because if I would need to, I do something wrong as mage. As for robes and so on, don't really care much. Mage is about spells, not gears. Spells are mage gear.
