I still say ditch the staffs all together. If all they're good for is popping your enemy with, you might as well grab a proper weapon and call it a day.

They also help channeling magic.

Could a normal weapon be modified to do something similar? Besides, the gloves, pendants and other gear you wear do the same thing. And they don't have the side affect of marking you as a mage for the world to see.

A person can have a walking stick or a crude weapon, so I don't think it necessarily screams mage. Bethany starts off with a very large twig.

What are you hoping for the Mage class in DA2?

I have finally played it today and found it pretty similar to mage class in Origins. You have same spells like Fireball, Crushing prison (I would miss that one:) or Mind blast and also same way of casting. Only staff wielding looks better, more action and cooler moves. Well same as new game - its somehow faster. I loved playing mages in Origins and I am glad they did not change them much. But on the other hand I am curious how new leveling type will be.

What changes from the Origins equipment would you like?

I really hope they will give us more spellweaver-like equipment. And some better looking robes. After all I believe mage Hawke is supposed to be apostate.

A small question: I don't see where mages' finishing moves come into play.
Will there be finishing moves when you're in melee? I suppose those instances will be rare. (or not? new spells?)
Finishing moves from afar?
I play a mage, I love mages I just don't quite understand the logic behind finishing moves for mages (of course I welcome them - although I believe we were not disadvantaged compared to other classes regarding finishing moves (all the effects of fireballs, walking bombs, freeze and shutter etc etc etc ).

You know the arms pulling the Qunari apart in the destiny trailer?

That is the finishing move for crushing prison.

Any sign of Walking Bomb? That was my favorite.

Dunno if it is a finisher, but saw a report from PAX I think it was with some darkspawn feet being the only remainder of a genlock after a fireball.. :-]

I'm sure this might have already been said, but I'm just hoping Arcane Warriors are going to have moves like in the DA2 trailer where Hawke slashes his weapon down and sends flame at the Qunari warlord guy... If so, that'd be awesome. I think Arcane Warriors should of got moves like that in the first place.

Video:

The flame slash starts at about 1:28 in the video.

I wonder if we'll see more of those kinds of moves for Arcane Warrior... I do hope so. I also hope that sword-staff weapon can be used by them, too. It's probably the perfect weapon for an AW. Hoods would be nice, too.

I don't think they even have arcane warriors, it is most likely just a spell on the fire tree.

I think that you might get some talent that makes staff-fighting in melee better and a larger amount of short-range spells. Not an arcane warrior.

Face it guys, mages are getting nerfed TO THE GROUND in Dragon Age 2. They were the most overpowered class in Dragon Age 1, and by the rule of thumb for developers balancing a class, they'll almost certainly go to far (most developers (you can see this in pretty much every MMO ever made) tend to overshoot their goal rather than undershoot it when nerfing a class), and leave mages as the rogues of DA2.

Btw, the staff sword idea in my mind is absolutely idiotic. It has a handle suited for a polearm, and a blade suited for a greatsword. The two together=A completely impractical and absurdly heavy weapon that you probably wouldn't even be able to carry, much less twirl around like a baton.

Honestly, even if they make mages half as powerful as they were in DA:O the game will probably still be in their favor.

Yes, but it will look awesome. Rule of Cool, my friend. If I wanted accuracy I'd join the SCA.

Not yet. Only few spell were available. Mostly those we already now. Fireball, Inferno, Crushing prison, Mind blast, some sort of spirit blast  (only new name for Arcane bolt). Leveling was locked so I could not find anything. But I believe DA2 will have many old spells.

Also those EA guys who were presenting said Hawke will have special class- somethind made just for him since He is supposed to be a hero. So not like every mage can be Arcane warrior as it was in Origins.

hmm.......very interesting!  Did the presenters mention anything about Arcane Warrior, and that was exclusive to Hawke?

also, did you get a chance to see the Mage staff melee combat?  Did the staff melee attacks look pretty cool?

I bet Hawke's custom class/spells may be like the "Power of Blood" stuff the Warden can only get in DA:O. But expanded cus Maker knows Flemeth could bake up a lot of goodies. Avernus had 200 years to make two spells. Flemeth is smarter, more powerful, and a lot older, so no telling how many goodies she could give to Hawke.
