What are you hoping for the Mage class in DA2?

I have finally played it today and found it pretty similar to mage class in Origins. You have same spells like Fireball, Crushing prison (I would miss that one:) or Mind blast and also same way of casting. Only staff wielding looks better, more action and cooler moves. Well same as new game - its somehow faster. I loved playing mages in Origins and I am glad they did not change them much. But on the other hand I am curious how new leveling type will be.

What changes from the Origins equipment would you like?
I really hope they will give us more spellweaver-like equipment. And some better looking robes. After all I believe mage Hawke is supposed to be apostate.

(Please excuse my english, I am not native.)

Any sign of Walking Bomb? That was my favorite.

Not yet. Only few spell were available. Mostly those we already now. Fireball, Inferno, Crushing prison, Mind blast, some sort of spirit blast  (only new name for Arcane bolt). Leveling was locked so I could not find anything. But I believe DA2 will have many old spells.

Also those EA guys who were presenting said Hawke will have special class- somethind made just for him since He is supposed to be a hero. So not like every mage can be Arcane warrior as it was in Origins.

hmm.......very interesting!  Did the presenters mention anything about Arcane Warrior, and that was exclusive to Hawke?

also, did you get a chance to see the Mage staff melee combat?  Did the staff melee attacks look pretty cool?

Sorry, they did not tell much about mage Hawke (we had many questions and little time) and also you could only play as default warrior Hawke. Only mage in party was his sister.  I really dont know if Arcane warrior class will be back, but I think we dont have to worry about brand new kick-ass mage classes. Whole game is faster than it was with more action. It is just my opinion now, but I think if mage Hawke is going to be Champion of Kirkwall, he need to learn some sword fighting.

Well only mage was Bethany and she was clasicall ,,distance" mage, but creators added more staff moves, it looks more dynamic now. Still you cant exactly tell how it will look in final version or how it will be with Hawke. For example mind blast has different casting now. And also they said, that mages finally got their own finishing moves.

Face it guys, mages are getting nerfed TO THE GROUND in Dragon Age 2. They were the most overpowered class in Dragon Age 1, and by the rule of thumb for developers balancing a class, they'll almost certainly go to far (most developers (you can see this in pretty much every MMO ever made) tend to overshoot their goal rather than undershoot it when nerfing a class), and leave mages as the rogues of DA2.

Honestly, even if they make mages half as powerful as they were in DA:O the game will probably still be in their favor.

Archereon wrote...
Btw, the staff sword idea in my mind is absolutely idiotic. It has a handle suited for a polearm, and a blade suited for a greatsword. The two together=A completely impractical and absurdly heavy weapon that you probably wouldn't even be able to carry, much less twirl around like a baton.

Yes, but it will look awesome. Rule of Cool, my friend. If I wanted accuracy I'd join the SCA.

Maybe its just because I once worked at a Renaissance fair(e) and know how insanely heavy some Medieval and Renaissance era arms and armor are, and have some idea how unwieldy Hawke's staff sword would be, but I've been a stickler for accuracy in the depiction of weapons (that aren't magically augmented in such a way that removes the practical issues with "RULE OF COOL" weapons) in fantasy as long as I can remember.

Yes, swords can be heavy, but they aren't that heavy that people think. Swords weight usually about 1-2kg. Some plate armor how ever, could weight about 20-35kg. Problem isn't ability lift sword, what is easy, but even small weight can cause users hand become tired very fast when it's used sertain ways. (Pound is about 0.45kg)

How ever, as this is about mages. Staffs, wands, daggers and just hands would be better for mages. They don't require much of strenght or stamina to use them, just skill.

how is Mind Blast cast differently now?

and, when Bethany cast her spells, did she always use her staff?  Did she cast any with her hands?

I'd like to at least use the staff to block/deflect/parry attacks, rather than having to always run from an attacking enemy, or just using a cone of cold. I have no desire to turn my mage into a melee fighter with spells, but it would be nice to get more use from the staff, besides stat boosts. It seems like DA2 is going in the right direction in this regard.

Also, am I the only one that noticed that mages in Origins had spells like Arcane Shield and Rock Armor? They weren't totally defenseless without the Arcane Warrior spec. My Spirit Healer/Blood Mage was all over the place, locking down the battlefield.

No, we notice them, but they wheren't really usefull. I did not even take Arcane Shield at all, but was forced to take Rock Armor, because wanted some other earth related spells. Why they where not good? Because the defence was minimal, good for lower levels sure.  They also cased fatique, like any normal armor would have done. Fatique meaned higher mana cost. So, basicly I tryed to avoid using any  mages "defense".

Well she always used staff except for Mind blast. This spell is still low range so you must be close to your enemies and she is casting it with her ,,head"  (like some sort of head beam).

So far, all of the storyline stuff that's been mentioned about the chantry and the fact that Hawk might be an Amell warden's cousin have really been pushing me to play as a Mage!Hawk. The latter part has a real appeal to me since my main warden was a female Amell.

Storyline wise though, its weird that the two most important people in recent Thedas history are female human mages...

Has there been any tidbits to lure people to the side of rogues or warriors? I almost want to be convinced otherwise so my Thedas storyline makes more sense.

My first and most pts in RPGs are as a Mage...or rather Sorcerer (D&D), so that won't be any different in DA2. However, as I feel the same about this as you, for my first pt with a Mage, I'll import my Cousland Warrior. When I play as a WarriorHawke later, I'll import my Mage. Those 2 are also my "canon" DA:O pts, so it'll all work out fine, I think :-)

Mages are supposed to have more slender build than warriors. In most cases this would be true. What if my mage spent his spare time doing pushups instead of reading up on blood magic? He should be strong enough to hold a sword or two.

I love casting spells a lot. But, I feel a bit emasculated by the bath robes and silly hats. Hawk to me seems to have an atheletic build. If any mage can rock a bod and armor like that, I'm cool. My mage likes his armor and swords more than sticks and rags though.

No one bats an eyelash when warriors are involved, as they are everywhere. When the hero is a mage, the people of Thedas would certainly bat an eyelash. Just saying. Also, I plan to import my mage playthrough for my DA2 mage playthrough, as I don't see an issue with it. Not sure if my canon DA2 game will be mage or not, will have to see how game goes.

Well Oghren certainly finds the robes fruity, given his conversations with Anders.

Also that's one of the reasons why I always went Reaver warrior: awesome equipment that you can actually put to good use, up close and personal combat, and bad*** abilities that make you function like a more primal, unnatural blood mage.

I am working on a female human mage though, but it's very much uncharted waters for me.

Mage1: "Ha, my fireball explosion is bigger than yours."
Mage2: "I can still freeze your ass 20 paces away, you can't even do any kind of frost spell yet!"
Mage3: "Hey, did you check out my new staff? Ya, brand new with a fine polish to it... even has one of those rare red crystals on top. Also added some Tevinter script on it, it was a few sovereigns more, but you know, I'm worth it."
Mage1: "My fireball is still bigger than yours."

But that wasn't really what I was talking about (and your comment sidesteps the gender issue, but whatever).

I thought the person I was responding to was getting at the idea that it'd be somehow unrealistic or unbelievable--from the perspective of the player--for both the Warden and Hawke to have been female mages.  I on the other hand don't think it's a big deal.
