Mass Effect Character Survey 5.0 - Some thoughts.

1. Female LIs (Tali, Liara, et al) have slightly higher standard deviations than male LIs (Garrus, Kaidan, et al). Otherwise, there doesn't appear to be any other trends concerning standard deviations. As always, it seems that Mordin and Legion have the lowest standard deviations.
2. Tali is not as popular as she used to be. Her average is below that of Liara's now - or did the release of LotSB have an effect on how people view Liara?
3. Garrus has the highest mean of any character, followed by Legion ad Wrex, respectively.
4. Morinth is has the lowest average of the seventeen squadmates. Jacob has the second-lowest mean.
That's all I can tell you from just eyeballing the data. The real meat of this, however, is in how the data will shift once we break down by demographics such as sex, age, and sexual orientation...

Garrus and Tali were, IMO, both written a lot better in ME2 than they were in ME1. If you broke those two up into seperate categories you might find that quite different.XX55XX wrote...
And also, it seems that ME1 squadmates have nearly 74% of the votes for "Best Squadmate". Seems that the ME2 squadmates aren't quite as popular...

So is this based on the responses to which squamate is best or which romance is best?
A related thought: the way you worded the romance question might be skewing the data. "Which squadmate has the best romance" might be skewing things in favor of Liara, as she certainly has the most in-depth romance (in terms of most dialogue, presence in both ME1 and ME2 DLC, discussion of feelings, backstory, etc.). My favorite romance choice is not Liara, but I do think her romance is the "best", i.e. the most well-developed, of all the LIs.

This is very true.
By the way I believe that LotSB did have a large effect. It gave Liara a much deeper character. I think she is about tied with Tali now in my opinion as to the character with the most personal issues, and therefore, the best in the best in the series.
Maybe for the next vote, XX55XX, you can break it up like Malanek stated.

Interesting note. Perhaps I do word these things less succinctly than I should. I really meant: Which romance do you prefer?
Perhaps a version 6.0 of this survey will fix this once and for all.

Hmmm... I am not sure how I would break that up. I remember, in an older version of the survey, I had allowed people to cast their ratings on how they viewed a certain character in both ME1 and ME2. But, then it got hairy and complicated...

The results you seem to be communicating with us do seem surprising though. I'm not a crazy Tali fan or anything, but it is odd that she dropped from first to seemingly 4th + place over one poll. Plus, I know Wrex is popular, but I didn't realize he topped Legion. Garrus is understandable, as there are only like two people on the planet that don't like Garrus.
Hey you started this whole character survey thing, I'm sure you'll come up with something. I agree, I'm not quite sure how you could break it up to make it work, but I'm being serious: I wish you good luck for 6.0

Her average dropped by at least eighth-tenths of a point, while Liara's score actually went up by at least 1.5 points. Everything else appears to be the same...

In version 3.0 of the survey, Tali held fourth/fifth place. Now, she's down to seventh, with Kasumi and Liara before her.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because of who is visiting the forums these days. Liara fans are all in a tither about LotSB, and want to discuss it and her, and hence are revisiting the forums in greater numbers. In general, Tali fans may be showing up with less frequency (nothing new to discuss regarding her character). Not to mention they also have had their support thread locked, so there's less of a reason for them to visit this particular forum.

I put an advertisement up for this survey on the Clan Zorah group. Though then again, only the really hardcore would actually visit to post there.
I wish they appointed one mod to patrol just that one thread. I actually miss the Tali thread, actually, in spite of all of its craziness...
Perhaps when the Tali thread is back up will I re-introduce the poll.

Also, I'm not sure why Tali fans wouldn't visit this board, unless her character were the ONLY thing they wished to discuss...Are her fans less welcome here than a communist at a Tea Party rally, or what?

At this point in time, he's still number three.
Tali's numbers have slipped noticeably. Garrus' have more or less stayed the same, though in some interpretations, his numbers have improved somewhat.

Yep. Sadly people hated tali because she was way to popular, and the anti-tali alliance were probably more immature then the talimancers themselves. It was absolutely ridiculous.Redcoat wrote...
Also keep in mind that these forums represent a small subset of all Mass Effect players, so it will not necessarily represent the opinion of the majority.

Yeah it seriously is. Both sides act like 12 year olds, and its quite sad. If both sides could learn to play nice we might just get some actual results from this little poll.

LotsB did a lot for her character, not to mention probably being the best ME related DLC to date. Also a lot of the people who had Tali as an LI in ME2 would have had Liara as their LI in ME1, and may have shifted back to preferring Liara after her DLC. I would imagine that Tali would have been taking a dip in popularity before Lotsb as well just as a reaction to the more crazed of her devotees. Im sure there were plenty of people who considered Tali their favorite squadmate or LI, until the Talimancers got a hold of her.
But Tali being so far down in the rankings does seem a little suprising. I'd still expect her to be around second or third place, even with the Liara DLC and some of the anti-Tali sentiment caused by the Talimancers. They must not be visiting the forum since their thread got nuked.

A lot of that has to do with BioWare's sudden turn to communism when they enforced their "No Tali Thread" law.
As for me Tali is still my favorite LI. Liara became my #2 after the release of LotSB.
Furthermore, if they decided to release a DLC with a plot involving Tali, or any other character for that matter, they're popularity would most likely rise as well. Good character portrayal always ralies fans. LotSB certainly did that for Liara.

I simply don't think its possible to get any real results at this point when only the really hardcore mass effect players are paying attention.
Of course maybe I'm just bitter because my favorite character has seemingly fallen in popularity, I'm not above admitting that I may be letting my emotions get in the way of facts. I don't think thats the case,, but I accept the possibility.

I might run such a poll again when ME3 is announced or something... That will draw more people to this forum again.
