this was actually my first Final Fantasy game I haven't played to many of them I have played 7,10, 11 (for a few hours before getting bored) and 12 which is awesome! but 7, while it has it's moments, it's over long I don't understand what is so great about this band of terrorists how many people have been killed by they're actions? cutting off power supply, blowing stuff up, probably a lot of innocents and it's full of some hippie crap about saving the world and sepiroth wants to destroy the world for some reason. I find the weapons stupid for the most part people carrying around weapons much larger than they are and that whole segment about dressing in drag to rescue a girl. I don't recall playing past the second disc because the game just started bothering me. Also why didn't they give aeirs a phoenix down to bring her back to life after sepiroth kills her?

I remember playing FF5 several years ago on an emulator and thinking "Wow, this is awesome!"

Then I played FFX on the PS2, and I wanted to throw it out the window. Give me the old look anyday.

Honestly, the hype for Halo Reach kind of reminds me of the hype Final Fantasy 7 had before it was released where every game magazine talked about it, commercials running non-stop etc. It also was a good game in it's time, which is why it is still remembered well (like other classics from the playstation 1 era including Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, and the early Tomb Raiders). It also doesn't help that the Final Fantasy series has taken a nose dive in quality since X-2. Are there fans that take it too seriously? Yes, but then again, every major game has fans like that (Halo, Call of Duty, and yes, even Mass Effect have overly obsesive fans) I remember it as one of the best early 3D RPG's, but there are other games I like better.

It's well remembered because it's a great game and it was a great introduction for many people into the RPG genre. Hell, it is THE reason why RPGs are even popular in the USA. Before Final Fantasy VII it sucked to be an RPG fan and I remember how furious I was when Final Fantasy V's US release was canned due to the USA's lack of interest in the RPG genre.
I wouldn't say Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the RPG genre. Hell, it wasn't even my favorite Final Fantasy but it was still a great RPG with fantastic production values and the materia system allowed for great character customization.

I think people look back fondly on the old Final Fantasy games partly out of nostalgia and out of resentment for the new "on rails RPG" linear style crap we saw in Final Fantasy X and XIII. Final Fantasy XII's non-linear style was a step in the right direction but it had some bad design decisions, a weak storyline, and mostly forgettable characters.
Final Fantasy XIII was a disaster. It was utter crap, a complete barrel of bullocks. The game had absolutely no sense of adventure and all of the beautiful environments felt superficial since you couldn't do anything in the game other than travel in a straight line. The storyline's exposition was so poor that it couldn't even be understood unless you read the codex-like entries which is really just inexcusable.
In Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age the codex was there for some fun background information but neither were necessary to understand the plot. Forcing a player to read through page after page of information to understand a plot because the writer's can't think of a good way to tell it in the game is just flat out bad writing.
I could go on about this abomination of an RPG. It's offensively stupid character designs from the overly sexualized, annoying Vanille to Sazh with that stupid Chocobo in his hair. Even the music in the game sucked.
Final Fantasy XIII is easily a contender for worst game of 2010 in my opinion and I play a LOT of bad games.
What makes Final Fantasy XIII more offensive than your typical crap game say like Vampire Rain is that Final Fantasy XIII actually think's it's a good game. It fells so pretentious you can't just help but imagine the smug, arrogant look on the developer's faces as they thought they were creating some sort of masterpiece work of art.

Final Fantasy is RUINED!

Why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel? Stop bottling it up inside.

In all seriousness, I never got the Final Fantasy thing to begin with. The only jRPG I really got into was Crono Trigger, which is still better than most games today. I tried FF7 on multiple occassions, but I always end up getting annoyed when it takes me half an hour to walk across a screen because I get interrupted by THE SAME DAMN RANDOM ENCOUNTER EVERY 2 INCHES!!!

The story itself...I don't really know what's going on. Something about Sephiroth and his mother...only his mother is some sort of biological oddity and not really his mother. Cloud is a terrorist because...he thinks it will help him kill Sephiroth and atone for his hometown being destroyed?

Busomjacks hate for FFXIII is quite remarkable. He was going on about it before it even came out. It was an ok game, nothing special. It took the ****** a bit by trying to fool you into thinking you had choice when you really didn't and some of the characters were horrendous, I mean Snow is the worst character I've ever seen in all my years of gaming. But it was still oddly enjoyable.

Before Final Fantasy VII it sucked to be an RPG fan

I'm not sure what constitutes "before" in this context, or "RPG fan". My wiki search says FF7 was released in '97-'98. I enjoyed many games in the early to mid 90s including these series; Eye of the Beholder, Ravenloft, Lands of Lore. IMO you give way too much credit to FF7. Perhaps if you had said "console 3D RPG fan" I might agree.

All Swing!

The REAL RPG is D&D, and it's not played on a computer! Don't make me check for wandering monsters.

I think for many people, especially in the now 23-29 age range, FF7 was likely their first RPG that made them into RPG gamers. If it was their first RPG, you know you'll always look back on it with fond memories and it will always be the best game ever in your opinion, no matter what has come out since.

I admit, I've played it and I'm not sure why people swoon over the game, but for others it has that sentimental value and it had an effect on them. I had a friend who was one of those FF obsessed freaks and so I can say it definitely made an impact on that person. Each generation should have a game like that. It just happened to be FF7 for that generation.

Looks like some people are just angry that fewer nerds are attending their D&D geekout sessions than the Final Fantasy party next door (の_の) Hang in there OP, this is after all the bastion of "Not me! - Me neither!"ers everywhere; you'll find someone to discuss the finer points of Morrigan or sexually-deviant elves with :P

What's it matter to you if someone enjoys something that you don't? As I've said before on similar threads here, anyone who actually HATES anything has problems that've nothing to do with the object of hatred ^^;

I agree with your views. Im 28 and it was the first RPG I played. I loved it and would still put it in my top 10 games of all time. But at the same time I just dont get the obsession, some people take it too far. It was a good game but the story doesn't hold up to close scrutiny these days.

About Phoenix Down, technically it doesnt resurrect dead characters, as in really dead characters. Character with 0 health is merely wounded and knocked out. (thats why rest in the tent or inn recovers them too) When your party is all down to 0, then you are at the mercy of the enemy and therefore dead. If Phoenix Down could really resurrect every dead, the fantasy world and its problems wouldnt make much sense dont you think?

Final Fantasy VII was the last really good FF game. (FF8 is bollocks, FF9 tried really hard and even succeeded in some ways, but it was still average and I do not even have to mention FFX and FFXIII) Yes, its very japanese and some things might go over your head (like the drag thing. personally I think it was quite unnecessary too, but it was still amusing in a very creepy way, especially if you manage to get Cloud chosen... *shudder*) but the story towards the end is very good, with characters really fleshened out and all and there were plenty of secrets through the world too.

Still, its popularity is bit overblown. FFVI is MUCH superior game. If there ever will be a next 3D FF remake, FFVI deserves it. And so does Chrono Trigger which I think is equal, if not superior to FFVI, but that game is not really FF.
