I think for many people, especially in the now 23-29 age range, FF7 was likely their first RPG that made them into RPG gamers. If it was their first RPG, you know you'll always look back on it with fond memories and it will always be the best game ever in your opinion, no matter what has come out since.

I admit, I've played it and I'm not sure why people swoon over the game, but for others it has that sentimental value and it had an effect on them. I had a friend who was one of those FF obsessed freaks and so I can say it definitely made an impact on that person. Each generation should have a game like that. It just happened to be FF7 for that generation.

Pretty much this.  It was my first RPG, and it was made me love em.  Good times.

Pretty much ditto everything MaaZeus said.

Also, FF7 was somewhat edgy in that the story was extremely cryptic and was designed that way. For a lot of people, including some here it seems, that means they either fell in love with the story or thought it was terrible. I could make a similar judgment about the Metal Gear Solid series. That one is even higher on the crypto-meter.

Finally, Sephiroth is an extremely well done villain. Again, they cryptic nature of the story might not make this apparent. He's very much a cut above the rest.

Overall, I look back fondly at the game but the main thing I took away from it for so long is Sephiroth. Course, I'm much more a fan of the villain rather than the hero so...

I can't help but feel a little sorry for people whose first RPG was Final Fantasy VII. You missed out on a lot of great RPGs.

Hell even on the PS1 there was Wild Arms before Final Fantasy VII and that was an excellent RPG. I still whistle the main theme to that game every once in a while.

chrono trigger was my first rpg. when i played final fantasy vii. i wasn't all that impressed by it. wild arms was another awesome game that came before. if i had xenogears and ff7 next to one another, i'd pick xenogears.

I'd pick Xenogears too. That game had an incredibly epic feel and a fascinating world. I loved the combat system too, still one of the best I have ever seen in an RPG.

Too bad Xenosaga sucked.

FF7 is a great game as far as FF games go. But FF6 (Final Fantasy 3 in North America) >>>>>FF7 and is the reason there was so much excitement about the release for FF7.

yeah, it's unfortunate xenosaga sucked. xenogears was awesome until i hit a game halting bug. i was way in the game. it was the prison city after my gear broke down in the arena battle against another prisoner. i ran around, found the blanka look alike, spoke to him, and he never triggered some progression like he was supposed to. i grinded around in the sewer so much that i could kill everything with one hit, learned a few more tech attacks while down there, and spoke to the rest of the npc's more than a hundred times before finally giving up. the rest of my saved files had become corrupt. :crying:

You wanna talk about Phoenix Down? How about the fact that every character in Dragon Age keeps popping back up the second they think no enemy is watching, no matter how badly they were repeatedly beaten up  Were they merely playing possum?

BUT OF COURSE the minute they decide to leave your party they're suddenly vulnerable to death. :?

Personally everything about FF8 sucked hardcore, yet I find it infinitely more fun and replayable than FF7. I have no idea why.

Maybe because the combat system was kind of broken, yet in an endearing and exploitable way.

Hmm, let's see.  Well I refuse to play any MMO, especially WoW, on principle.  It can look kickass and I won't play it, even if given the opportunity.  Why?  Because the whole idea of playing an immersive game with complete strangers is just off-putting.  I enjoy multiplayer games where I know who I'm playing with, and thus can judge whether or not I want to play with them, but MMO's pretty much force you to deal with idiots and overall rude people if you want to play at all.

I don't care for any JRPG, because the art style, story quality, and gameplay aren't to my tastes, simple as that.

@OP~ Its a little something called storyline. You should look into it sometime.

And if you don't like it then move on with your life. Thats what I had to do after watching Terminator Salvation.

I thought FF8 was fantastic (pardon the pun) for the first few hours until I realised I may aswell be watching Dawson's Creek or some other melodramatic toss. I know all FF games are over the top melodrama and emo nonesense but FF8 took it way too far.  A bunch of overly talented military trained teenagers who just happen to end up joining forces after growing up in an orphanage together and forgetting all about it until now have to take on their former babysitter to save time itself....even remembering it is embarrassing.

Oh yeah, the story is a failure of galactic proportions!  Truly, truly terrible.

I remember not liking it at the time, and always kinda feeling that it was the odd man out.  But recently I've been looking back and thinking...it wasn't that bad.

GoGo nostalgia!
