So I currently have a level 3 cleric and I am still not 100% sure how the casting system works. I know I can only cast a few spells per day (there is no mana bar in D and D which is what I am used to). Currently I am following this build as I wanted to play a cleric tank http://nwn2db.com/bu...20293&version=1. I took the extend spell feat at level 3 and my spell book currently has the spells that can be extended...yet I CANNOT cast ANY of them even AFTER I rest why? I was able to cast some of them spell "Bless" but now I cannot..Is it because I am wearing a shield now? I was under the impression that Divine spells were NOT affected by armor? I
Help a moron understand the Spellcasting system...NOOB d an d guy here...

I dont want to sound offensive, but do you know how to load the spellbook (list where you cast spells from, iow, where you place spells to memorize when you rest)? I am a veteran of nwn (played for 5 years before nwn2), yet when i first played it took some time to figure out the spell system, so dont feel noobish. I am certain its common with nwn(s).

spells that are extended are also then considered a higher level spell.. in the case of bless it goes from a spell level 1 to a spell level 2

Yep just figured that out...lol I am just getting used to not having a MANA BAR as a caster lol...
Ok so I am trying to figure out the QUICKCAST ability that clerics get. Supposedly I can cast a heal spell in place of another spell that is in my spell slots yes? I see the quickcast option on the menu but how do I go about doing this in combat? just hit the quickcast menu and use the spell? I guess my question is how do I make sure I can use a heal spell in place of another spell in my slots.

I'll do my best here. As said above, extended spells are cast as a spell level higher than when gained. so if you have Extended Cure Light Wounds, say, you won't be able to use it until you are a 3rd Level Cleric with 2nd level spell slots. The extended CLW will now occupy a space you could normally place a 2nd level spell in. Until you get those slots, the Extended (or Empowered, or Stilled) spells won't be useable. The reason it is suggested to take early on is so that when the slots open up, you'll probably be focusing on something like Storm Lord or whatever other PrC someone thought you needed more than the 'dip' into Cleric.
To memorize a spell, you have to use the Spell Book, which is opened with the "B" key. It will open up a GUI that has your spells allowed on the left and spots to slap them in on the right. Also note that you have: * or 0, 1, 2, 3 and so on up to 9th level spells on the left in a numbered column at the top. They correspond to the rows of spell slots on the right.
You click on a spell on the left and it gets entered into the appropriate spell slot spaces on the right (if there's room.) If you need more room for another spell (and this is actually important, because it doesn't change until you decide to do so) you click on the spell you want to not remember on the right and the slot will open up.
To have these spells ready to go, you must then rest.
That's pretty much it.
And, in case you haven't figured it out, you should be able to drag your spells to the hotbar if you like, or press the "F" key and your QuickCast menu pops up. Some folks don't like this, because it takes up screen space and occludes your view of the action -- hence dragging the spells to the hotbar instead.

Since i think one of your questions was missed. ( or i missed the answer )
How do I make sure I can use a heal spell in place of another spell in my slots.
You can at any point convert known spells to healing spells, or to summon spells as a druid. Evil clerics get their spells converted to harming spells.
To do this open your quickcast showing all your spells via hitting the F key. I assume you hit B to learn spells in your spell book, dragged them to the proper slots and then rested. You can drag spells from the spell book or the quickcast to your hotbars as well. But you need actual memorized spells before you can use those spells or convert them into healing spells on the fly.
Now across the top will be your metamagics. Your empowered, maximized, silenced versions of spells take a spell slot higher usually, and show up when you hit the correct metamagic button.
Now to the FAR right next to the metamagics is a button which toggles your heal spells. Click it and ALL your spells change to the correct heal spells instead, which you can then just click to use, and it allows you to choose which regular spell you are sacrificing to do a heal/harm/summon instead.

Just a small clarification:
The unique Cleric ability that allows them to use Cure-type spells instead of other spells is called "Spontaneous Conversion". "Quickcast" is the name of the spell-selection menu you bring forth by pressing "F". All spellcasting classes have access to this menu.
And of course Cure Light Wounds cannot be Extended. Instant effect spells cannot have their duration doubled, only spells with a duration can be Extended (like Bless). I'm sure DNO knew this and it was only meant as an example, but I though clarification might be in order to avoid future confusion.

It was as only an example, but dno did not know this was not possible with CLW. Nice to know, but for me the information was more mechanical on "Here's how you do this" and "Here's how this works" as opposed to knowing what all spells can and cannot do, per se. I hardly ever play clerics these days and don't really know anything beyond the absolute basics when it comes to MetaMagic Feats. Thanks for the clarification.

You guys are GREAT!
I did figure out a good amount of this on my own BUT you guys have cleared a lot up. Now if I could only come up with my own multiclass specs instead of copying them of the internet lol..but with time I guess. Currently playing a Cleric (domains Earth and War), DD, Fighter. Whats good is my familarity with RPGS so I am getting along fine in the OC on Hardcore rules (on normal mobs cannot crit you I find that RETARDED lol)..This build gives you kind of a medium AB (but awsome survival and heals) so I just keep myself buffed with +attack and STR buffs and he hits fine.
Thanks again to dunniteowl, haplose, pain, morbane,, nikki, and avado. I hope to get competent enough to play in some persistent worlds and PVP!
