I ask this question because many people on this forum seem to have strong feelings about the Chantry and the templars. I personally would like to fight the Chantry unless they allow me to make some major changes.

There has to be a good reason to fight them. I'm not really interested in fighting something for the sake of fighting it.

This.
I might be eager to annoy the hell out of every Chantry member who attempts to shove their views down my gullet, the respectful ones who leave me alone not so much, but I have little desire to start a war with a force that still retains as much power as it does at this time. Especially since the forces of the Chantry might retaliate against those I care about, or even Kirkwall itself given it's ties to the main character.
If they leave me alone, I'll do the same to them for the most part. If they attempt to get in my way or harm those Hawke cares about however, particularly Bethany, then all bets are off.

Depends on the loot.

Depends, I would have no hesitation picking fights with Templars. They are too inquisitorial. The Chantry just needs to be purged of fanaticism and reformed. They do serve a greater good. So completely wiping them off the face of Thedas would serve little purpose.

It depends on the game, doesn't it? The Chantry doesn't seem all bad. With magic and the Fade and all of that, I don't think atheism is really viable on a whole level in their world. The Chantry could be far worse than it is. I might not agree with all of their doctrines, but things can be changed, can they not? Eradication isn't the only option.

If they turned into the Spanish Inquisition, then we have a problem.

I can understand why people hate the chantry...I know I did when I played a mage. God they are so annoying but never forget the Chantry was created in response to what the Tevinter Mages did way back when. I know Adraste was the reason but you know. I agree I will leave them alone as long as they leave me alone! :D

I don't really like the question because it assumes that the Chantry is a one-minded organization and our only choices are to aid or destroy it. DAO showed that, like in our world, zealots, saints, and those in between. I don't see my hero taking sides and being loyal to his or her ideals and indifferent to anyone who purports to know divine will. I think my hero will have seen enough of the world to not be so black or white.

i would definitely fight against the Chantry. they control/hunt mages for being who they are. if you ask me, they are afraid of mages because of the Tevinter Imperium. of course Thedas needs law and order... but not at the sake of others who have done nothing but be who they were born to be. so i would fight, fight to free the mages from the iron grip of the Templars and the Chantry!!!

I'm fine with the Chantry existing, so long as they do not seek to control magi with their smack-addict police force, nor exalted march their beliefs onto other cultures.

So I suppose I would fight the Chantry in its present form, until it becomes something less inflammatory.

I play rogues first, mages later. But none of my characters have any sympathy for persecution. And no matter who I play, Bethany will be my sister...so the Chantry better watch its overbearing arse.

The current Chantry is totally perverted in what Andraste originally wanted:

"Magic is meant to serve man, not to rule over him"

ZOMG WE MUST IMPRISON AND PERSECUTE ALL MAGES LOCK EM UP IN DA TOWA!!!!

No, Andraste's original message was that magic is a powerful tool, and like everything that comes with power comes great responsibility.

So it's a typical religion then? Skewing what is meant to serve their needs and desires.

Moral of the story? Andraste is actually Uncle Ben.

And on topic, I'd probably leave the Chantry alone, unless I was an Evil Mage, then destroy them!

If you're asking whether or not fighting the Chantry would be interesting, then I would say "yes."

However, while I don't agree with their locking up the mages in the Circle Tower, they do help people, and provide shelter. I see it as I do in real life-- I'm agnostic, so I don't agree with certain things about real religion, but it does serve a purpose. People use it to fulfill themselves, for comfort, and for something to look forward to once they die. I can't help but look at what the ramifications of destroying the Chantry could be.

I'd happily convince them to change a few things, though. Like, you know, freeing the mages.

Religion is humanity's way of coping with mysteries and what they don't understand. So yes the Chantry is a religion but uses their ideaology to pervert society's way of thinking that all mages are bad and Exalted Marches are of the Maker's will, too bad one of their Exalted Marches got pwned when they tried it on the Qunari
