I have a few questions about which are the best/most efficient  weapons(seems to changhe with each new DLC pack) to use with companions:
  • Mattock or Vindicator?
  • Incisor or Viper?
  • Geth Pulse Shotgun or Evisorator?
  • Phalanx or Carnifex? (I think I know the answer to this one, just making sure, there would be  something I'm not taking into account)
I can see the usefulness of each of the weapons I'm asking about , but I'm really not sure which is the most efficent (best) one for companions. I have seen contridictory post on which assualt rifle and shotgun were best and I'm not even going to go into all the different contradictory post on what sniper rifle is best.

I just want to know the best ones to use with companions period, even if they are not on my list.

As a rule I tend to go with weapons that are traditionally "balanced" by having a low ammo count, since squadmates get around this attempt at balancing by virtue of their limitless ammo.

So with that said

mattock (higher damage balanced by low ammo)

incisor (perfect aim, in combination with lower damage reduction (squadmates do less damage with weapons than shep, for whatever reason incisor has lower multiplier on thi front) and you get higher damage balanced by low ammo)

this one breaks the mold as the GPS isn't limited by ammo, but has by far the best midrange game of any of the shotguns. And since all the squadmates barring Grunt are exceptionally squishy you want any shotgun wielding squadmates to be at midrange. Where the GPS is the clear winner

carnifex (higher damage balanced by low ammo)

Thanks Sinosleep. I take back every bad thing I ever said about shooter players.... Ok not EVERYTHING... and definately not about console shooter players and anyone who plays Gears of War.... or anyone who has ever played Halo...

Edit: Wait... doesn't the Phalanx have more DPS than the Carnifex? Why then is the Carnifex then considered superior because of its smaller payload?

I find Vindicator to be more effective than Mattock for squadmates, imo.

The Incisor is perfect for squadmates since they have no ammo issue, and they always go for headshots.

Geth Pulse Shotgun, bar none. Its' range alone makes shotgun-using squadmates more efficient in combat.

Phalanx, period.

Nope, the carnifex edges it.

For SMGs, the Tempest seems to work best by far. For snipers, the Incisor. For shotguns, it's the GPS no contest (except loyal Grunt, who you can give a Claymore if you like).

For the others? I'm not really sure.

See, squadmates tend to be crap with rapid fire semi-auto weapons. The DPS of guns like the Predator, Mattock and Viper seem largely wasted on them as they fire them so slooooowwwly. Not sure if it's better then to give them the Phalanx as it fires slowly anyway, or maybe they fire that one even MORE slowly.

In Shepard's hands, the Viper kicks the tar out of the Incisor. But squadmates work so much better with the Incisor it makes people believe them bugged. Apparently devs say otherwise, so if that's the case, the AI is just really crazy awesome with weapons like the Incisor and not so hot with guns like the Viper. Vindicator and Mattock are similar to Incisor and Viper respectively, so it makes me wonder...

Just can't really think of a test for this.

In my experience, squadmates do a small enough amount of damage that the little boost they'd get by using the "right" weapon really doesn't make much of a difference. I honestly don't know if there is a "right" weapon for squadmates, because I don't notice any difference in level clearing times based on squadmate weapons. I've done some (very) amateurish tests, and the Incisor seems to be the best SR for squadmates, and the GPS seems to be the best SG, but even there the difference isn't huge. Other than that, I've not seen much if any difference between the Mattock / Vindicator, Phalanx / Carnifex / Predator (haven't really tested the HP's much, though, so that could simply be lack of data)

Because, to me, the difference between squadmates weapons is so minimal, I go with "coolness" factor. I like Garrus to have the Mantis SR, even though the Incisor is technically better. I like the "BOOM!" "headshot comment" rather than the pewpewpew of the Incisor. I also love the sound of the Mattock, so every squaddie that uses AR's gets the Mattock (except Legion, the GPR just fits him, being a geth and all).

I've actually started choosing weapons for squadmates based on RP reasons, just because I haven't noticed much real difference between them in-game. And yes, this is on Insanity (or at least Hardcore).

I believe [no proof to back it up] that squadmates don't take advantage of Semi-Auto weapons so I like to give them things that they can handle fairly well.

-- AR: Geth Pulse Rifle ... It basically works and has good full auto

-- SMG: Tempest ... Teammates don't seem to have aiming issues

-- Shotty: Geth shotty except for Grunt

-- Snipers: Incisor ... except for Legion who gets Widow [The basic SR may be better than Viper for teammates IMHO]

-- Pistol .... Carnifex

I've heard some discussions on SMGs... while overall the Tempest seems to be the better choice, some people prefer the Shuriken for behavioral reasons in that burst fire allows them to back under cover often. I frequently give Miranda the Locust because I find her way too aggressive with the Tempest. I don't know why, but my Miranda often rushes into CC range and empties the enitre clip while everybody nails her to a pulp when using the Tempest. She seems to be more conservative with the Locust. I still don't know what's better.

It may be that they need more positional management with the Tempest... I don't really know because I almost always set squadmates positions manually anyway...

Sad but true. The squadmates seem clearly programed to fire AR like, well, AR. They pull the trigger once when they have a clear shot. A stream of bullets is supposed to follow.

If squadmates could keep tapping and make a Mattock fire numerous times when it was possible, it would be the clear choice. Unfortunately, it's not.

I actually find the Avenger is a very good weapon for AR squadmates - they'll keep up a steady flow of shots consistently. They fire slowly with just about everything else, but with the Avenger they just keep shooting, which if nothing else keeps the enemies in cover so I can get rid of them my own way.

This.

As for the SMGs, I go with tempest for everyone except Sakumi, she only wants the Lokust.. keeps saying " but it shot the president".. yeah yeah, whateva, take it.

Don't think I ever have my squadmates using the assault rifles. Seems a little pointless when Garrus and Zaaed are so much better with the incisor which fires in bursts anyway, and Grunt is more useful with his Claymore. I'd give more squadmates the Locust if it didn't sound so awful (compared to the Tempest). And with the GPS for my non-SMG squadmates, they rarely ever use pistols.

Just took Zaeed and Garrus on Jack's recruitment mission. Both equipped with Mattock and Incisor. No ammo powers.

The scored more hits and did more damage with the Incisor every time. Don't know if it was because of the burst mode or what. I was expecting the Mattock to win out but they missed more shots with the mattock for some reason.

Not all shots hit with the incisor, mind you, but the targets all dropped quicker when they used it versus the mattock.

The best weapons for squadmates:

Assault Rifle: Mattock (So good that it out-classes even SRs for members that can equip both i.e. Garrus/Zaeed).

Sniper Rifle: Incisor (or widow, for Legion, or if you decide to mod the game to give widows to everyone!)

Shotgun: Geth Pulse Shotgun

Pistol: Carnifex (Faster ROF, squad tends to shoot too slowly with Phalanx)

SMG: Depends (Tempest is good if you are facing lots of shielded enemies. For a good mix of shields and/or armor, I prefer the Locust)
