my main shep is a spacer/sole survivor. i can relate to the spacer the best, having moved around a lot, so it makes those convo options more fun. i chose sole survivor because i like the idea that this man that has grown up in the shadow of the alliance and really wants to do his part for humanity and his family but also carries aorund the guilt of being the last one alive. this also makes romancing ash and liara both reasonable. he is usually pro alliance and law abiding on everything, until about 3/4 of the way though me1 when he meets up with toombs and kills the scientist. with the connection between cerberus and the alliance revealed, his faith is now shaken, allowing him to question orders more and focus more on the personal mission of stopping the reapers.
Commander Shepard: Which one are you?

My main shep is male Earthborn/Sole Survivor. I like the fact that my shepard went through tough childhood and enlisted to the alliance to get away from the hell he was there. He still holds responsiblity for being the only survivor on Akuze while the rest of his unit died.
Despite the scars from his past, he still moves on and fights for what his wants and believes.

I didn't pay attention to the whole morality system when I rolled my first character, I was basing the character off of a favorite character of mine when I used to play Battletech.
Me neither. This is a bit embarassing but...at first, I had no idea background gave any morality points, I just thought it altered the way some characters treated you.
Don't feel so bad, I had no idea it gave morality points or biases based off the background. I have to be honest, it wasn't the fact I didn't pay attention to the morality so much as the fact it didn't even register it was there until I asked my friend who got me hooked on this games "Sooo...what's with the paragon and renegade points?"
The silence was deafening on the other end of the phone.

I did a lot of those but my personal favorite by a long shot was Colonist/Sole-Survivor.

Colonist/War Hero. When he fought Saren, he was compassionate and caring, always taking precautions and saving everyone he could. After he was killed and the Alliance turned it's back on him and the real threat, he turned into a real hardass, realizing that he must be absolutely ruthless if he is going to save the galaxy.

Earthborn-Ruthless is my main character.
Colonist-Ruthless is my secondary character.
I'm going to do a Colonist-War Hero one of these days.

My four Shepards (the top one being my main):
Kyle Shepard (Colonist/Sole Survivor): This Shepard started out as a tragic figure who saw everything he loved destroyed by the batarians, then later watched his entire unit die around him on Akuze. But instead of letting these tragedies destroy him, he's become stronger because of it, and has made it his mission in life to save as many people as he can. Seeing his whole unit die gave him some common ground with Ashley Williams, and after his best friend and longtime comrade-in-arms, Kaidan Alenko, died on Virmire, Shepard was determined not to lose anyone else under his command--which he accomplished when he brought his entire team out of the Suicide Mission alive, after destroying the Collector Base.
Valentina Shepard (Earthborn/War Hero): This Shepard had a rough childhood on the streets of Earth, and while a member of the Reds she did a lot of things she wasn't proud of. After seeing too many kids die from gang violence, she decided to clean herself up and joined the Alliance, making a name for herself with her defense of Elysium. Though she strives to do the right thing, her violent youth has given her a bit of an edge, and sometimes she'll agree that you have to make sacrifices for the greater good. This attitude came to the forefront when she advised the Alliance to sacrifice the Destiny Ascension to ensure a stronger attack on Sovereign, and later when she decided not to destroy the Collector Base, deciding that its potential benefits against the Reapers were too great to ignore.
Sarah Shepard (Colonist/Ruthless): This Shepard also had a tragic childhood, having watched her entire family be butchered by the batarians. She's carried an intense hatred for the batarians ever since, though she has no grudge against other alien species. When she saw an opportunity to exact revenge on the batarians on Torfan, she took it--at the cost of many of her soldiers. Despite her no-nonsense (and occasionally vicious) attitude, she values maintaining order in the galaxy above all else, causing her to save the Council from the geth and destroy the Collector Base to keep it from falling under Cerberus' control.
James Shepard (Spacer/Ruthless): This Shepard never knew his father, who died in the First Contact War. Raised all across the Alliance by his widowed mother, Shepard grew to hate aliens, particularly turians, for the death of his father. He approves of humanity's efforts to strengthen itself throughout the galaxy, and supports the Terra Firma party. He later sacrificed the Council, realizing that with them out of the way, nothing could hold humanity back anymore, and after willingly joining Cerberus two years later, he chose not to destroy the Collector Base, realizing that the technology that could be gained from it could provide victory over the Reapers and all other enemies of humanity.

A few of my Shepards are Legends. Earth is used a lot in regards to science fiction and I thought a colonist would be a good change of pace. War Hero (after learning who the war hero fights) just makes sense to me for a colonist Shepard. I've never made a Colonist anything else but war hero.
One of my Shepards is default (that was my initial playthrough).
The rest are Spacer/Sole Survivors. Being a military brat, in my mind, gives someone the mindset that they are as close to being full of themselves. So the sole survivor branch pretty much grounds them and lets them know that they can and will make mistakes AND they can be costly.

My favorite:
Jason Shepard - Earthborn/Sole Survivor. (Paragade)
Joined the Reds at 12 years old with long-time friend and girlfriend, Amber. Made his innitiation kill at the same age. At 14 recieved his second exposure to eezo while providing back-up at a eezo deal. It went south, eezo containers exploded and got on Shepard and his GF. Afterwards they both showed biotic skills, using red sand daily to enhance biotics. At age 17 the Alliance tracked down Shepard and fitted him with L3 implants. Started to go clean off the sand. Amber did not. Shepard tried to convince her to quit and get fit with implants. She was too into the drugs to listen. Amber OD'd while Shepard was out taking care of business for the Reds. When he came back to their shack, she was dead. Shepard held her dead body for hours, crying. He wanted out of the Reds, and out of Detroit ASAP. The Reds leader wouldnt let one of their best enforcers leave, so Shepard killed everyone in the room. Nearing age 18 he layed low with the junkies in the low levels until he turned 18 to enlist in the Alliance. At age 23, Cpl. Shepard and 50 other marines went to investigate the new colony of Akuze. They were ambushed by thresher maws. Cpl. Shepard's whole unit was whiped out. He survived for 7 days on Akuze in the most hostile of environments. When the Alliance found him, he was promoted and asked to join the N7 Program. The psychologically scarred Shepard accepted.. He still thinks about Amber from time to time. Never gets close to the women he sleeps with, always one nighters. Which is why he does not sleep with the women in his crew. Too close, too painful.. Until Jack.
